Chapter 414: Chapter 414: The Art of Spellcraft
[Third Person Pov]
Lucian was within the training ground with Hecate standing right beside him. The wide stone field was quiet and empty, built for the sole purpose of experimentation and practice. Lucian stood at its center holding his crystal ball in front of him, both hands steady despite the strain in his posture, while a faint purple mist slowly swirled around his feet like living fog.
“Do you remember what you have to do?” Hecate asked calmly. She was not guiding him through the process, nor offering assistance. She simply stood there watching, observing the progress of his attempt with sharp, attentive eyes.
Lucian was visibly sweating as he concentrated, small beads forming along his temple and sliding down the side of his face. “Yes… First I have to build the core of the spell.”
“And what’s the core made of?” Hecate quizzed him immediately, her tone unrelenting.
“A spell core is made out of Magic power, Comprehension, and Intent,” Lucian answered. His brows furrowed deeper as he stared into the center of his crystal ball where the mist thickened and churned slowly.
“Good,” Hecate said, giving a small nod. “And what comprehension and intent are you using to build this core?”
She already knew the answer, but that was precisely the point. She was deliberately forcing him to divide his concentration and maintain control at the same time.
“Space,” Lucian replied through clenched focus. “I’m using my comprehension and intent of space.”
The purple mist around his feet stirred more actively as he spoke, responding to the concentration gathering in his mind. Lucian inhaled slowly and steadied his breathing. In his thoughts he began isolating the concept he wanted to manifest.
Space.
Not distance. Not emptiness.
Space as separation. Space as boundary. Space as a pocket that existed apart from everything around it.
Within his mind he attempted to condense that understanding into something singular and clear. A place separate from the world. A contained domain.
The mist flowing from the crystal ball thickened slightly as it responded to the forming concept.
Hecate watched silently for a moment before speaking again. “Define the Core clearly.”
Lucian swallowed before answering. “Isolation… A space separated from the outside world.”
“Refine it,” Hecate said without hesitation.
Lucian clenched his jaw as he focused harder. The concept sharpened within his mind.
“A pocket space… an enclosed subspace created through mist.”
Hecate remained silent this time, allowing him to continue.
The mist around Lucian’s feet slowly rose upward, curling around his legs like thin tendrils of vapor. His crystal ball glowed faintly as it continued releasing more of the purple fog.
“Now the Framework,” Lucian murmured to himself.
He visualized the flow of magic moving from the crystal ball outward into the mist surrounding him. Instead of dispersing randomly, he began imagining pathways for it. Circulation patterns. Boundaries. Walls formed from layered currents of mist that folded inward instead of expanding outward.
The magic stirred.
The purple mist slowly lifted from the ground, drifting outward in a loose circle around Lucian. It did not spread across the entire training ground. Instead it remained close to him, gathering into a hazy sphere several meters wide.
Lucian’s breathing grew heavier.
“Describe your Framework,” Hecate said suddenly.
Lucian winced slightly at the interruption but answered regardless. “Circular containment… the mist forms the outer boundary… layered compression to prevent leakage.”
“Good,” Hecate replied. “Continue.”
Lucian exhaled slowly and kept shaping the structure in his mind. The mist obeyed his will as it folded inward on itself, creating a thicker shell of swirling fog around him. The air inside the forming sphere began to feel heavier as the magic condensed.
Now came the final component.
The Anchor.
Lucian slowly lowered the crystal ball until it hovered close to his chest. The purple mist continued to pour from it, feeding the growing structure.
“Anchor?” Hecate asked.
Lucian lifted his hands slightly.
“Gesture.”
He slowly brought his first two fingers together, pressing the tips of both hands against each other in a precise formation he had chosen beforehand. The moment the gesture completed, the magic circulating within the mist responded instantly.
The Anchor locked into place.
The mist surrounding Lucian suddenly surged upward like a collapsing wave before folding inward toward him. The world outside blurred violently for a brief second as the spell forced reality to accept the constructed space.
Then everything changed.
The training ground disappeared.
Lucian blinked once as the pressure vanished from his body.
He was no longer standing on stone.
Instead he stood within a vast expanse of absolute darkness.
There was no ground beneath his feet and yet he remained standing, as though the space itself supported him. Endless shadows stretched outward in every direction, swallowing distance and depth alike. The darkness was not empty—it was thick, alive with faint currents of mist that drifted silently through the void.
Above them, the sky burned a deep crimson red.
It stretched endlessly overhead like a sea of scarlet clouds, casting a dim eerie glow across the shadowed expanse.
Lucian slowly lowered his hands, staring around himself in disbelief.
The void responded subtly to his presence. Thin trails of mist moved through the darkness like distant currents, as though the entire space existed within a boundless ocean of shadow.
Hecate stood beside him exactly where she had been before.
She glanced around calmly, her expression unreadable as she examined the environment.
Lucian swallowed. “It… worked?”
Hecate raised her hand slightly, letting a strand of purple mist slide between her fingers before it dissolved into nothing.
“Yes,” she said.
Her eyes lifted toward the red sky before drifting back to Lucian.
“You successfully created a contained illusionary subspace using the mist as both medium and structure.”
Lucian looked around again, still processing the vastness of the dark domain surrounding them.
“But,” Hecate added calmly.
Lucian stiffened immediately.
She looked at him with a faint smirk, “Your Framework is inefficient, your Core is slightly unstable, and the Anchor will collapse if your concentration wavers.”
Hecate folded her arms, “But,” she continued, her voice carrying the smallest trace of approval. “For a first attempt… It is impressive.”
“Hahaha! Yes!” Lucian exclaimed, hunching forward with excitement. His hair was matted with sweat and clung messily to his forehead as he clenched his fist tightly, his eyes shining brightly with unrestrained delight.
Seeing something you had painstakingly worked toward finally come to life was always a deeply rewarding feeling. The countless moments of concentration, frustration, correction, and effort condensed into a single instant where theory became reality. For Lucian, that moment was now.
Hecate watched him celebrate, and despite herself she couldn’t help but smile. The expression that formed on her face was soft and warm, far gentler than the composed demeanor she usually carried. Watching her student succeed brought a quiet satisfaction that was difficult to put into words. Lucian’s achievement felt like a victory for her as well, because the knowledge she had passed on had taken root and blossomed into something real.
Still, as she glanced around the illusionary subspace surrounding them, her lips twitched slightly.
The endless darkness stretched in every direction, thick shadows folding over one another like layers of ink while faint strands of mist drifted through the void. Above them the crimson sky burned dimly, casting a muted red glow across the surreal domain Lucian had constructed.
Her eyes narrowed slightly as she studied it.
’What a little freak…’
The thought came with equal parts amusement and disbelief.
’I know I helped him refine the idea and everything, but still… to be successful on his first attempt.’
Even most seasoned practitioners required multiple failures before stabilizing something as delicate as a conceptual subspace, especially one relying on mist as both medium and boundary. Yet Lucian had forced the structure into existence on the very first try.
Hecate released a slow sigh and shook her head.
Stepping closer, she reached out and placed a hand on top of Lucian’s head without hesitation, not minding in the slightest that his hair was damp with sweat from the strain of the spell.
Lucian blinked in surprise but didn’t pull away.
’I suppose he wouldn’t be Lucian if he couldn’t achieve this much,’ she thought to herself.
Her hand ruffled his hair once before resting there briefly, the faint smile still lingering on her lips as the strange red sky and endless shadows of Lucian’s newly created subspace stretched silently around them.
