- Chapter 338: Annabeth Vs. Hydra (2)
[Third Person POV]
The tips of Annabeth’s fingers on both hands ignited with shimmering bands of magic, tiny sparks snapping in the air. Her eyes narrowed, locking on one of the Hydra’s many monstrous heads as it pulled back, the inner lining of its throat glowing a crackling golden hue. A bolt of lightning was charging within its fanged maw, each spark growing brighter until it threatened to blind her.
Annabeth exhaled sharply and sketched a glowing symbol across her palm with a single swift motion, the runes forming on her skin with a hiss of power. She sprang upward just as another serpentine neck whipped toward her, the snapping jaws slicing through the space where she had been a heartbeat before.
The dragon didn’t hesitate. The charged head released a blinding beam of lightning that tore through the sky like a spear. Annabeth raised her wrist and thrust her glowing palm forward, the runic symbol shimmering with power as It read: Absorb.
The bolt slammed into her hand with a deafening crack, electricity dancing across her body in violent arcs. Her muscles seized and her teeth clenched, but she held firm. The raw lightning coursed into her, swallowed by the rune and dragged into her veins until her magic and alchemy twisted the destructive energy into something she could wield as her own.
A sudden shadow streaked beneath her. Another head burst upward, jaws gaping wide to swallow her whole. Annabeth reacted in a blur—she stamped downward and conjured a magic circle beneath her feet. The sigil solidified like glass, creating a glowing platform in the air that propelled her higher in a graceful leap.
Circle after circle appeared in rapid succession, forming a staircase of pure energy as she bounded across the battlefield like a dancer. Around her, Hydra heads snapped and spat death from every direction—jets of flame roared upward, spears of plasma lanced through the air, beams of light and darkness carved through the smoke, and streams of acid hissed.
On her other palm she swiftly carved another rune with a flick of her glowing fingertip, the letters burning like molten silver: Release.
Annabeth brought her hands together. Between her palms a sphere of lightning flared to life, a miniature sun wrapped in writhing electric arcs. The energy built to a violent crescendo, vibrating the air around her until her hair stood on end. One of the heads lunged upward, its throat igniting with a furnace of fire.
“Bon appétit,” Annabeth muttered, her voice carrying a razor edge of amusement.
The sphere screamed forward like a railgun round. The Hydra’s flaming head exploded in a shower of blood, charred flesh, and shattered bone, the shockwave rattling the ground below.
But victory was fleeting. Almost instantly two fresh necks bulged from the smoking stump, splitting the skin like overripe fruit as new heads clawed their way free. Each newborn serpent shrieked, their eyes burning with unholy malice, and streams of flame dripped from their fangs.
A sharp, mechanical whrrr echoed ominously from the base of another throat. Annabeth’s eyes widened—atomic breath.
She dropped, twisting midair. Her boots struck the ground as her arms spread wide, fingers carving a vast alchemic array in the earth before her. The Hydra unleashed its catastrophic breath, a searing beam of nuclear energy that could melt mountains. But as the torrent struck her array, the deadly light fractured and dissolved, transforming into a swirling storm of black rose petals that filled the air like a nightmarish blizzard.
The petals whirled around her in a hypnotic dance. Annabeth extended a hand, her magic seizing them like a puppeteer pulling strings. She commanded the storm to converge, the petals twisting together into a towering silhouette. The shape solidified, transforming it with alchemy, metal blooming from shadow until a colossal iron figure emerged—an armored knight whose design mirrored Lucian’s Knight form, sword and shield gleaming under the chaotic battlefield light.
Annabeth used [Material Enhancement] and [Architectural Animation] with a single touch.
The golem’s eyes flared a crimson light as life surged into its frame. With a roar of grinding steel it lunged forward, leaping over Annabeth’s head to meet the Hydra. Its shield crashed into the snapping maws, each impact sending shockwaves through the ground. The massive sword cleaved through a writhing neck, severing it cleanly. The detached head fell with a thunderous thud, shaking the earth and spraying black colored blood across the smoking battlefield.
Annabeth’s own eyes widened, exhilaration lighting her grin. Two titans clashed before her—metal against monstrosity—each strike like thunder, each roar like a mountain splitting.
The golem hacked and slashed, decapitating head after head, but the Hydra’s cursed biology only birthed more. Chains of pure steel erupted from the cracked ground at Annabeth’s command, wrapping around the Hydra’s thick trunks of muscle to slow its endless assault. Still, the beast adapted. Neck after neck coiled around the iron warrior, constricting it in a vice.
The golem tore free in a burst of sparks, its sword flashing in desperate arcs. Heads fell, but every victory was poison—two more sprouted where one was cut. A barrage of fire and plasma beams slammed into the knight’s shield, the metal groaning as atomic breath tore it apart. The sword followed, encased in sudden frost until it shattered into glittering shards. Acid rained down from above, eating through the golem’s armor until the proud creation sagged and melted into an unrecognizable heap of slag.
Before her stretched a sea of writhing, roaring heads, each mouth glowing with a different brand of annihilation.
Annabeth inhaled slowly, steadying her racing heart. Her eyes sharpened, and a dangerous smile curved across her lips.
“I think,” she said, her voice carrying through the cacophony of screeches and crackling magic, “that should be enough…”
She raised her hands, magic and alchemy intertwining in a storm of symbols and light.
“Time for the grand finale.”
Annabeth raised both hands high above her head and clapped them together with a sharp crack that echoed through the moonlit forest.
Immediately, the world answered her.
Runes flared to life across the bark of the trees, silver marks lit up their trunks until each tree became a pillar of living sigils. Symbols were etched into the soil, boulders were no different. Every mark pulsed with restrained power.
All the while she had been running and fighting, helping her metal knight keep the Hydra at bay, she had been secretly preparing this very moment—slipping runes into the earth with every footstep, embedding sigils with every palm strike against stone, weaving invisible circles of magic and alchemy throughout the entire forest floor.
The clap was the trigger.
With a sound like a thousand arrows slicing the air, binding chains of radiant metal burst upward from the glowing runes. They whistled through the darkness in streaks of light, twisting and coiling around the Hydra’s endless necks.
The monster shrieked in fury as dozens of heads snapped and thrashed, but the chains only tightened, wrapping around scale with unrelenting force. The creature strained violently, each movement making the ground tremble, but Annabeth had anticipated every possible counterattack. Every placed marked had been reinforced with [Material Enhancement], the alchemic strength of diamond hidden within each link.
The Hydra’s vast body heaved and writhed, yet it could not break free.
Annabeth let out a long, controlled breath, feeling the drain of power. Her trap had devoured more energy than she cared to admit, but she still had enough left for the grand stroke.
She spread her arms and called forth the final symbols. On the back of her left hand, an intricate alchemy circle appeared—a perfect square contained within a glowing circle. On her right hand, a pentagram flared silver.
A single wisp of crimson flame bloomed between her palms, tiny and almost delicate, as though the heart of a candle had been coaxed into existence.
“Alchemy and magic,” Annabeth murmured, her voice low and resonant, “aren’t so different. Alchemy is simply magic bound by science… and both are nothing without the knowledge to wield them.”
She began to work.
With her left hand, she fed the flame oxygen and different gases, transmuting the air itself to fuel its hunger. With her right, she tightened her magical grip, shaping and containing the volatile heat. The wisp swelled, its color shifting like a living spectrum.
Red deepened into molten orange, then brightened to a piercing yellow. Her breathing quickened as the flame flared into a neon green blaze, then bled into a shimmering pale blue. The air warped from the sheer intensity, the heat so sharp it stung her skin and made sweat bead and run down her temples.
Still she pressed on.
The blue thickened into a deep indigo, before finally blooming into a brilliant violet fire that seemed to hum with a sound beyond mortal hearing.
Annabeth’s lips curved in a breathless smile. Slowly, delicately, she rotated her hands, coaxing the violet flame into form. Under her command the fire folded inward, edges sharpening until it blossomed into the shape of a perfectly detailed butterfly, its wings traced in lines. The creature hovered, trembling with lethal beauty.
“[Architectural Animation]” she said, imbuing the fiery construct with movement and intent.
Then she leaned forward and blew softly across her palms.
The butterfly fluttered away, leaving a trail of violet embers in the night. It floated through the smoke-choked air toward the raging Hydra, which was still tearing and roaring against its chains. Every head craned upward, vomiting streams of fire, lightning, plasma, and acid into the sky in a frantic attempt to break free.
Out of the corner of one monstrous eye, the Hydra noticed the tiny glowing shape.
The butterfly twirled gracefully around its snapping jaws, wings scattering sparks like falling stars. Hypnotized, several of the heads tracked its dance as it drifted downward, finally landing with deceptive gentleness upon the center of the beast’s massive snout.
BOOOOOOOM!!!
The forest vanished in a single colossal eruption. Violet fire consumed everything, roaring outward in a mushrooming pillar of light that dwarfed the tallest trees. The shockwave flattened entire groves, sending boulders skidding across the ground like pebbles. Annabeth’s feet lifted from the earth as the blast hammered her, forcing her to throw up a shimmering force-field to keep from being torn apart.
Inside the inferno, the Hydra didn’t even have time to scream. Its armored scales vaporized instantly, flesh and muscle igniting into a storm of embers. For a fleeting instant its blackened skeleton stood framed against the raging violet fire—an enormous shadow writhing in silence—before it, too, dissolved into drifting ash.
The purple flames raged skyward, crackling like a chorus of thunder, before slowly guttering into glowing coals. What remained of the Hydra scattered as little more than a fine gray dust carried on the night wind.
Annabeth lowered her shield and stared at the scorched clearing, chest rising and falling in ragged breaths. Her bangs clung damp to her forehead, the air still shimmering with residual heat.
“Hah… ha…” A shaky laugh escaped her lips, half-relief and half-shock. She rubbed the back of her neck, her expression caught somewhere between pride and disbelief.
“I… might have overdone it a bit,” she admitted with an awkward grin, violet sparks still flickering faintly around her.
