The two Pokémon that appeared before Red were the Steelix and Scizor, which had evolved after receiving a Metal Coat.

Upon seeing Red, Steelix’s previously fierce expression instantly turned gentle and honest. It joyfully approached Red, but fearing its metallic body might scratch him, it hesitated to rub against him.
