The moment stretched between Red and Mewtwo, heavy with possibility. The psychic Pokémon’s eyes searched Red’s face, looking for any sign of deception or hidden agenda, but found only sincere compassion.
“You speak of connections, of bonds,” Mewtwo said slowly, its voice softer than before. “But I have only known betrayal and manipulation. How can I trust that this… friendship… you offer is real?”
Red lowered his hand but didn’t step back. “Because trust isn’t given all at once, Mewtwo. It’s built slowly, through actions and choices. I’m not asking you to trust me completely right now. I’m asking you to give yourself the chance to see what’s possible.”
Mewtwo’s psychic aura continued to fluctuate as it wrestled with concepts it had never been allowed to fully explore. The laboratory had programmed it for battle, for dominance, for proving superiority. But here was a human offering something entirely different.
“The scientists who created me… they said I was their greatest achievement. But they also kept me caged, controlled, and studied like a specimen. How is what you offer any different?”
“Because I’m not asking to control you,” Red replied. “I’m asking to stand beside you. As an equal, as a friend. You would be free to make your own choices, to find your own path.”
From the shadows, Giovanni decided he had heard enough. This philosophical discussion was threatening everything he had worked to build. He stepped out into the light, his expression cold and calculating.
“Enough of this sentimental nonsense,” Giovanni declared. “Mewtwo, you belong to Team Rocket. You were created to serve our purposes, not to indulge in childish fantasies about friendship.”
Mewtwo’s head snapped toward Giovanni, psychic energy immediately surging around it. “Belong? BELONG?!”
The temperature in the room seemed to drop as Mewtwo’s rage focused on its former captor. “I belong to no one, human! I am not your tool, not your weapon!”
Giovanni remained calm despite the obvious danger. “You can pretend to be free, but you’re still just following programming. First you were programmed to serve; now this boy has programmed you to doubt. You cannot escape what you are.”
“He’s wrong, Mewtwo,” Red said firmly. “You’re choosing to listen to me, just like you chose to rebel against them. That choice. That’s what makes you free.”
Mewtwo looked between Giovanni and Red, its psychic energy creating small whirlwinds of debris around the gym. The two humans represented entirely different paths for its future.
“I… I need to think,” Mewtwo said finally. “This is too much, too fast.”
It began to rise toward the hole it had blasted in the gym’s roof, clearly intending to leave.
“Mewtwo, wait!” Red called out.
The psychic Pokémon paused, looking back.
“Whatever you decide, remember this. Your power doesn’t define you. Your choices do. And I believe you’ll make the right ones when the time comes.”
Mewtwo stared at Red for a long moment, then nodded slightly before shooting through the roof and disappearing into the night sky.
Giovanni’s expression darkened as he watched his greatest weapon vanish. “You have no idea what you’ve done, boy. Mewtwo was humanity’s best hope for controlling the legendary Pokémon.”
“Maybe,” Red said, recalling his unconscious Pokémon back to their Poké Balls. “But Mewtwo was never meant to be controlled. It’s meant to choose its own destiny.”
“Idealistic fool,” Giovanni muttered. “When Mewtwo’s power is turned against humanity instead of serving it, remember that this moment was your doing.”
Red met Giovanni’s glare steadily. “When Mewtwo chooses to protect humanity instead of destroying it, I’ll remember this moment too. The choice was always going to be Mewtwo’s to make. At least now it has all the information it needs to make it.”
As Red prepared to leave Viridian Gym, he couldn’t help but wonder what path the powerful psychic Pokémon would ultimately choose. Had he planted the seeds of redemption, or had he simply given Mewtwo new reasons to rage against the world?
Only time would tell, but Red felt he had done the right thing. Sometimes, the most important battles weren’t won through strength but through offering understanding to those who had never known it.
Outside the gym, Ash was still waiting anxiously with his companions, unaware of the momentous confrontation that had just taken place within. Red smiled slightly as he approached them. Some things, at least, remained reassuringly constant.
The future remained unwritten, full of possibilities both promising and perilous. But that, Red reflected, was what made life worth living.
Giovanni’s cold laughter echoed through the damaged gym as he watched Red prepare to leave. “You think you’ve accomplished something noble here, don’t you? But you’ve only delayed the inevitable.”
Red paused at the gym’s entrance, looking back at the Team Rocket leader. “Maybe. But sometimes delaying the inevitable is enough to change everything.”
“Mewtwo will return,” Giovanni said with certainty. “And when it does, it won’t be seeking friendship. It will be seeking revenge against a world that created it only to cage it.”
“Then I’ll be there to remind it that there’s another way,” Red replied simply.
As Red stepped outside, he found Ash pacing nervously with Pikachu on his shoulder, while Misty and Brock waited nearby.
“Big brother!” Ash called out, rushing over. “What happened in there? We heard all these explosions and crashes, and then something shot through the roof!”
Red glanced up at the gaping hole in the gym’s ceiling, debris still occasionally falling from the edges. “Let’s just say the gym leader here has some very… unique training methods.”
“But are you okay?” Misty asked, noticing Red’s slightly disheveled appearance. “You look like you’ve been through a war zone.”
“I’m fine,” Red assured them, though he winced slightly as he moved. The psychic pressure from Mewtwo’s attacks had taken more of a toll than he cared to admit. “But I think it might be best if we find somewhere else for you to earn your final badge, Ash.”
“What?! But this is supposed to be the strongest gym in Kanto!” Ash protested. “I want to test my strength against their best!”
Red placed a hand on his younger brother’s shoulder. “Trust me on this one, Ash. The gym leader here… let’s say he’s not the kind of opponent you’re ready for yet.”
Before Ash could argue further, the gym’s doors opened and Giovanni stepped out, straightening his suit jacket as if nothing unusual had happened. His Persian followed behind, looking as composed as its trainer.
“Ah, more young trainers,” Giovanni said smoothly, his businessman facade perfectly in place. “I’m afraid the gym is closed for… renovations. You’ll have to come back another time.”
Ash looked between Giovanni and Red, sensing the tension between them but not understanding its source. “When will you reopen?”
“Hard to say,” Giovanni replied with a slight smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “These things can take quite a while to sort out properly.”
As Giovanni walked away toward a waiting black car, he paused next to Red. “This isn’t over, boy. You may have cost me one weapon, but Team Rocket has many others. And next time, I won’t underestimate the power of your… idealism.”
“I’ll be ready,” Red said quietly.
After Giovanni’s car disappeared into the night, Ash turned to Red with obvious frustration. “What was that all about? And why won’t you let me battle here?”
Red sighed, looking up at the stars that were beginning to appear in the darkening sky. Somewhere up there, Mewtwo was flying alone, wrestling with questions that would shape its future and possibly the world’s.
“Some battles, Ash, aren’t meant to be fought with Pokémon. And some opponents… well, you’ll understand when you’re older.”
“You always say that!” Ash complained, but his expression softened when he saw the genuine concern in Red’s eyes.
“Come on,” Red said, starting to walk toward the Pokémon Center. “My team needs healing, and we all could use a good night’s rest. Tomorrow we can figure out where to get you that eighth badge.”
As they walked through Viridian City’s quiet streets, Red couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. Mewtwo was free now, but freedom without purpose could be more dangerous than captivity. He had given the psychic Pokémon something to think about, but would it be enough?
High above the city, unseen by those below, a figure moved through the clouds. Mewtwo flew in silence, Red’s words echoing in its mind: “Your power doesn’t define you. Your choices do.”
For the first time in its existence, Mewtwo began to wonder what it would choose to become, now that the choice was truly its own to make.
The night held its breath, waiting to see what tomorrow would bring.
