Adrian’s steps were steady—he didn’t need support to walk—but still, Ruby kept a hand on his arm, as though unwilling to let him move unguarded.

Finally, he broke the silence, his lips curving faintly. “You didn’t know your father was about to propose?” His tone carried a teasing edge.

Ruby’s cheeks warmed, but she shook her head. “I had no idea. I could never have imagined Father would actually… allow me to get engaged for this reason.”

Her voice didn’t carry even a hint of resentment. In truth, her real feelings about the engagement were far more complicated—feelings she feared might startle Adrian if he ever saw them clearly.

Still, she couldn’t deny her surprise. Of all people, she never thought her father would take such a step.

“Well, let me know your thoughts on this. As you already guessed, I am just using you here. This engagement is something akin to political marriage.” He was utterly honest with his words, allowing her to think this through before making the decision.

Ruby’s gaze lowered, with a smile she said, “You already know how I feel about you, Adrian. Yet you are asking me if I am okay with this?”

Adrian turned silent…somehow, it felt like he was taking advantage of her feelings.

Silence didn’t linger between them for long before Adrian said, “You are doing a big favor for me…is there anything I can do in return?”

Having the Vermillion family on his side would surely keep the Towers like Celestial Hall and Twilight Vault away for the time being.

And until they could find a way through the armour, Adrian would be ready with a plan to tackle this situation.

So yes, Ruby was his savior.

Ruby hesitantly held his hand, her slightly cold fingers wrapping around his index finger like a hesitant child as she asked, “Just…give me some of your attention and I will be happy.”

Adrian smiled at her silently. And that smile was enough to assure her.
