Chapter 166: Chapter 166: The civilian
Arik lifted his head a fraction at the word ’settle,’ as if he had just been insulted in a foreign language and understood enough to object.
“Stay,” he mumbled, reaching for Gabriel while still clinging to Damian.
Gabriel stepped closer immediately and brushed a hand over Arik’s hair. “We’re not going anywhere. You’re just going to sleep.”
Arik squinted at him with the grave suspicion of a child who had been told lies before, then yawned again so hard his eyes watered.
Natalie chose that moment to begin a small, escalating protest from Rafael’s arms – more tired outrage than true crying. She rooted at his coat, then smacked his chest with her tiny hand as if demanding he fix the offense of consciousness itself.
Rafael’s whole posture changed at once, instinctive and tender under the silk and rank. “All right, all right, little tyrant,” he murmured, swaying her. “I know. I know.”
Gregoris’s hand came to Natalie’s back briefly, one broad palm covering almost all of her, his touch careful despite the size of him. His expression did not move much, but his voice when he spoke was low and certain.
“She’s done.”
Rafael gave him a look. “Obviously.”
Noah, in Adam’s arms, had gone from solemn to fussy with brutal speed, pressing his face into Adam’s shoulder and making the soft unhappy sounds of a child trying not to cry and failing in installments.
Adam shifted him with practiced ease, his hand spanning Noah’s back, thumb moving in small soothing passes.
Max watched for half a breath, his earlier humor thinning into something quieter.
“Take him,” Max said to the attendant, then added before the man could step in, “No… wait.”
He leaned in first, touching Noah’s cheek with two fingers, absurdly gentle for someone who looked so relaxed while discussing the destruction of reputations. Noah made a small sound and turned toward him.
Max’s mouth softened. “Go terrorize the nursery.”
Adam almost smiled, then surrendered Noah to the attendant, lingering just long enough to adjust the blanket at his son’s shoulder.
The attendants moved with an effortless pace after that.
Arik was transferred from Damian to the nursemaid with much negotiation and one sleepy, indignant “Papa,” followed by Damian’s quiet promise that he would come by later. Natalie was coaxed into a wrap while Rafael kissed her forehead and Gregoris watched like a man tracking troop movement. Noah, already half-asleep from sheer exhaustion, was carried off in a cocoon of linen and soft wool while Adam’s eyes followed him until he disappeared into the flow of staff and ward-lit corridor.
For a few moments, the center of the hall emptied.
The children went, and the air left behind felt different, as if the warmth had been physically carried away with them.
Damian and Gabriel were claimed almost immediately by another discreet wave of obligations – an aide at the edge of the room, a signal from a security captain, a matter that could not wait because courts were built on the principle that peace must always be interrupted.
Alexandra was intercepted by a lady with excellent posture and terrible timing.
Gregoris was pulled aside by one of Damian’s men, who murmured something low enough that only Gregoris heard it. Gregoris’s gaze sharpened at once, and then he looked to Rafael before he moved.
“I’ll be back in a moment,” he said.
Rafael nodded, adjusting his cuffs with the absent motion of someone who suddenly had empty arms and did not quite know what to do with them yet. “Go.”
Gregoris’s fingers brushed the inside of Rafael’s wrist – brief, possessive, grounding – then he turned and disappeared into the current of dark uniforms and polished shoulders.
And just like that, Rafael found himself standing for the first time all evening with no baby in his arms, no husband at his side, and Adam still nearby.
Adam was watching the corridor where Noah had gone, his expression composed but softer around the edges now that no one was looking directly at him.
Rafael studied him for a moment.
He had always liked Adam in the way one liked someone sensible in a room full of dangerous men. Adam had grace and intelligence and that particular steadiness that did not perform itself for approval. He was careful without being timid. Proper without being rigid. A man who could stand beside Max Claymore and remain wholly himself.
Rafael understood, suddenly and with surprising force, that he wanted to know him beyond court greetings and shared glances over other people’s chaos.
He shifted a step closer, enough to be heard without forcing Adam to lean in.
“Can I ask you something?” Rafael said.
Adam turned to him at once, attentive. “Of course.”
Rafael glanced once toward the corridor where Natalie had been taken, then back to Adam. There was no coyness in him, only a directness polished by rank and sharpened by survival.
“I’d like to know you better,” he said. “Properly. Not just as Max’s mate in a room like this.” His mouth curved, small and self-aware. “And not only while one of us is holding a child and the other is pretending not to eavesdrop on a political disaster.”
Adam blinked, caught off guard in a way that was almost endearing, and then he huffed, amused.
“Are you sure you want to be close with a civilian?” He asked, tilting his head.
Rafael laughed. “Did you not meet the majority of the nobles?” His eyes flickered around the room. “This circle is made by the most normal of them.”
Adam’s eyes flicked, almost automatically, across the nearby cluster as if reassessing the statement in real time.
Damian, across the hall, was currently reducing a senior official to posture and regret with nothing but a calm voice and a look.
Gabriel stood beside him like elegance made dangerous, composed enough to pass for serene if one ignored the fact that he had dismantled three conversations and a rumor network in under ten minutes.
Gregoris had the expression of a man who could quietly bury a problem and sleep well after.
Max was drifting back toward them with the smile of someone who treated social unrest as a hobby.
Alexandra, a few paces away, looked immaculate and faintly predatory while politely cornering a countess into silence.
Adam huffed, amusement and disbelief tangling together. “When you put it like that…”
Rafael’s smile widened, sharp and delighted. “Exactly.”
Adam folded his arms loosely, relaxing into the conversation in a way he hadn’t a few minutes ago. “So this is your version of normal.”
Rafael tipped his head. “No. This is my version of safe.”
That made Adam go still.
“You’re Max’s mate,” Rafael said, quieter now but no less steady. “That would already be enough for me to treat you with respect.” His expression softened. “But you’re also a person I want to know. Those are different things.”
Adam’s gaze held his, surprised again, but this time the surprise came with something warmer under it.
“You say things very directly for someone raised in this place.”
Rafael snorted. “That is because I was raised in this place. If I don’t say what I mean, someone else will say it for me and make it worse.”
Adam laughed under his breath, then glanced toward Max, who was now unmistakably approaching with the look of a man who had detected a conversation he was not controlling.
“He’s coming,” Adam said, almost fondly doomed.
