Chapter 203: Chapter 203: Family
Then the door opened.
Damian entered first, while Gregoris followed a step behind with a raised brow and the air of an expectant husband who knew perfectly well that his sweet mate would, at some point within the next five minutes, begin complaining to Gabriel about the
Arik looked up first.
“Father.”
The boy’s face changed at once, all the careful seriousness of play giving way to something warmer and brighter, though no less composed. Damian’s expression also subtly changed because Damian never did anything carelessly, but enough that anyone who knew him would have seen it.
But before he went to Arik, Damian crossed the room to Gabriel.
He stopped beside the sofa, his hand settling briefly at the back of Gabriel’s shoulder, then along the edge of his neck, a touch so controlled it might have looked incidental to anyone else. It was not. It was Damian checking, Damian reassuring, Damian making quiet contact first because Gabriel was still recovering and because Damian’s instincts, where Gabriel was concerned, had never once been sane.
“How are you?” Damian asked.
Gabriel looked up at him with a look that would have stopped most men in their tracks, but it did nothing to his husband. “Still alive.”
Damian’s hand lingered a second longer. “That wasn’t the concern.”
“No,” Gabriel said dryly. “You’re much more troublesome than concerned.”
The corner of Damian’s mouth moved. Not quite a smile. Close enough to count for him. He leaned down just enough to press a brief kiss to Gabriel’s temple before his gaze flicked once over him again as if confirming for himself that Gabriel was where he should be, breathing, seated, resting, and not secretly trying to overwork a body that had only recently given him another son.
Only then did he turn toward Arik.
By then, Gregoris had already been intercepted.
Natalie had abandoned the lacquered fox and the ether-lit toy house on the carpet and run to him with complete confidence that she would be caught.
She was.
Gregoris bent, lifted her with one arm, and straightened in one smooth motion, his expression barely changing. He was still Gregoris, the Shadow Commander, the duke, and the man who looked like he could kill someone between breaths and then go back to talking to his family without a wrinkle in his shirt. But Natalie settled against him with the ease of habit, and one of his large hands spread over her back automatically, firm and secure.
“Papa,” she announced, as though informing him of something important.
Gregoris looked at her. “I noticed.”
Rafael watched from his chair with immediate offense. “You see? Completely spoiled.”
Gregoris’s gaze shifted to him over Natalie’s head. “She’s standing on her own feet and speaking in full sentences. I’d call that restraint.”
“Catherine fed her cakes,” Rafael said. “And your brothers returned her with two toys powered by ether cores and the confidence of a minor aristocrat with land rights.”
Gabriel let out a quiet breath that was almost a laugh. Damian, now crouched in front of Arik, heard it and did not bother hiding the way his own mouth twitched.
Arik, meanwhile, had accepted Damian’s arrival with the composed pleasure of a child who adored his father and had every intention of remaining dignified about it.
“We made an office,” he said.
Damian glanced toward the toy arrangement. Cushions had become walls. The softly humming toy house had apparently been repurposed into some kind of administrative building. The carved fox sat near the center like a minor official awaiting promotion.
“For whom?” Damian asked.
“Natalie’s fox,” Arik said. “He tells people things they don’t want to hear.”
There was a brief silence.
Then Damian looked once at Natalie, still perched on Gregoris’s arm. “So he already works at the palace.”
Gabriel turned his face away for a moment, shoulders moving once with restrained amusement.
Rafael, naturally, seized the opening at once. “Exactly. She has instinct.”
Natalie lifted her chin. “He also needs a desk.”
Damian rose without comment and moved toward the low cabinet where extra toys and blocks had been stored, as if the emperor of the empire assisting in the furnishing of an imaginary office for a fox were entirely reasonable behavior.
Rafael stared. “You are not actually helping with that.”
Damian selected a flat block and returned it to Arik with complete seriousness. “He has responsibilities.”
“That is not how governance works.”
Gabriel looked at Rafael over the rim of his tea. “That depends who you ask.”
Meanwhile, Gregoris had crossed toward Rafael, Natalie still on his hip. He stopped beside Rafael’s chair and looked down at him in one of those brief, cool assessments that carried far too much information for comfort.
“You’re sitting.”
Rafael narrowed his eyes. “That is usually what chairs are for.”
Gregoris raised a brow.
Rafael instantly felt the trap and hated it. “Do not start.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You have the face of a man about to say several deeply unpleasant things.”
Gregoris’s gaze moved once over Rafael’s posture, the way he was lounging, the careful angle of his legs, the exact amount of elegance he was employing to disguise the fact that he was still feeling the consequences of his own ambition.
Then Gregoris looked back at him. “You’re sore.”
Rafael went rigid. “I will not be humiliated in front of the imperial family.”
“You already are,” Gabriel said.
Damian, still standing beside Arik and the new fox-desk, added, “This sounds self-inflicted.”
Rafael looked at all of them in betrayal. “I hate every person in this room.”
Natalie, hearing only the tone and none of the politics, patted Gregoris’s shoulder and informed him, “Papa carried me.”
Gregoris’s hand tightened slightly at her back. “Yes.”
Rafael pointed at the child. “And there it is. More evidence.”
Arik, with the air of a boy trying to be fair in matters of state, said, “Father carries me too.”
Damian looked down at him. “When necessary.”
Gabriel’s expression shifted by a fraction. “You define necessary very generously.”
Damian sat down beside him at last, one hand settling along the back of the sofa behind Gabriel, close enough to touch if needed, not close enough to crowd him in company. “He’s six.”
“That has never stopped you from acting like he’s breakable.”
“He’s ours.”
Gabriel did not answer that.
Rafael watched the entire exchange with professional interest and personal offense. Across from him, Arik had resumed arranging the office while Natalie, newly returned to the carpet, immediately began issuing further instructions with all the serene confidence Catherine, Damian, and half the Empire had apparently been helping cultivate.
Gregoris remained near Rafael’s chair, one hand slipping into his pocket while the other rested briefly against the back of the chair itself.
Hovering.
Rafael noticed.
“You stand in a pointed way,” he said under his breath.
Gregoris did not look at him. “I stand.”
“You hover like a threat.”
“Yes.”
That was, unfortunately, honest.
Rafael leaned back with a sigh of deep suffering and watched as Damian accepted a second block from Natalie like a man receiving strategic infrastructure, while Gabriel observed all of it with the exhausted tolerance of someone who had already given up on reason for the afternoon.
It was, Rafael thought, still deeply unsettling to watch men like Damian and Gregoris with children.
Not because they were bad at it.
Because they were good.
Good in ways no one outside these rooms would ever understand properly. Not soft, not playful in the usual way, not changed into gentleness but rather redirected into something more careful and even more dangerous: the attention, the vigilance, the absolute responsiveness, the way both men tracked small hands, changing moods, and hidden tiredness with the same intensity they gave to war, power, and survival.
Arik pointed at the fox. “He needs guards too.”
Natalie nodded with solemn agreement. “Because he says dangerous things.”
Damian considered that. “Fair.”
Rafael put a hand over his eyes. “I am watching the Emperor help my daughter militarize a wooden fox.”
Gabriel took a slow sip of tea. “That sounds accurate.”
Gregoris’s mouth almost twitched.
Almost.
And really, that was how Rafael knew the afternoon had gone entirely beyond saving.
