Chapter 186: Thwart the evil experiment
Chapter 186: Thwart the evil experiment
Although Phield enjoyed watching stories about goblins and nuns, that didn’t mean he wanted to see it happen in reality—especially not when some idiot was raising them using human lives.
Fifty or sixty goblins rushed out from the shadows, wielding all kinds of crude weapons as they charged in chaotic disorder.
“The Ring of Sin!”
With a thought, a surge of pure killing intent erupted within Phield. A black magic circle spread beneath his feet, instantly empowering the ten soldiers around him.
“The armor doesn’t feel as heavy anymore… I’ve got endless strength… my god, have I been blessed?”
The soldiers were filled with disbelief, their faces lighting up with excitement as they clenched their fists.
“Kill them all!”
At Phield’s command, the impatient soldiers formed a neat horizontal line. Raising their iron shields, they charged forward—the pressure like a moving wall of steel.
“Bang!”
The two sides collided violently. After knocking goblins down with their shields, the Nightfall Domain soldiers didn’t even need to finish them with maces. Lifting their feet high, they stomped down with over a hundred kilograms of force—armor and all—crushing the frenzied goblins into pulp.
A goblin leapt two meters into the air, raising a club to smash a human soldier’s head.
“Clang—”
“What was that?”
The soldier, wearing an iron helmet, merely swayed slightly before swinging his mace in a full arc, striking the goblin midair. The immense force shattered it into fragments.
Goblins were weak creatures to begin with. Against fully armored, empowered human soldiers, even a hundred more wouldn’t be enough.
Phield flickered forward, The Silver Iris Longsword appearing in his hand. With a single strike, he cut down a goblin rushing toward him.
“Ssshh—”
A burst of brilliant holy light erupted. The goblin shrieked as flames engulfed its body, reducing it to ashes in moments.
“Huh? It turned to ash? Does holy light also suppress goblins?” Phield frowned, staring at his sword in disbelief. “No… it must be effective specifically against gray-mist goblins, not ordinary ones.”
“Roar!”
A massive green-skinned beastman charged forward with heavy steps, its fist tearing through the air with explosive force as it aimed straight for Phield.
“No!” Lydia covered her eyes in terror.
Phield sidestepped the incoming punch and countered with confidence. It was just a common beastman. Magic surged into his right fist, and with the overwhelming enhancement of The Ring of Sin, his punch moved faster than the eye could follow.
Two explosive sounds rang out. The beastman’s head burst apart, while Phield’s punch also tore a massive hole through its chest.
The corpse crashed to the ground. Ashina lowered her longbow, scratching her head sheepishly. “Sorry, my lord… I couldn’t help stepping in. Beastmen are dangerous, after all.”
“It’s fine.”
Phield shook his head and turned to observe the battlefield.
The army had already slaughtered all the goblins. The cavern was now littered with their corpses.
“This is bad… I miscalculated.”
The black-robed man was horrified. He hadn’t even finished casting his spell before all his subordinates were wiped out. Left midway through his incantation, he didn’t know whether to flee or beg for mercy.
His legs gave out, and he dropped to his knees, weeping. “My lord, spare me! I had no choice!”
“Weren’t you pretty arrogant just now?”
Phield remained on guard. He had no intention of being caught off guard. “Explain your purpose. Why are you working with goblins? And what do you mean you had no choice?”
“I’m just a herbalist, commissioned to create a potion that adapts to the mist. Not for humans—for beast races.”
“Your employer is human too?”
Phield frowned. Why were there so many people betraying their own kind?
“Yes, it’s—”
Before he could finish, the black-robed man suddenly froze. His head exploded like a watermelon.
The surrounding soldiers immediately formed a shield wall, blocking the splattering filth.
“Fuck! Again? Who the hell is behind all this?” Phield’s expression darkened, anger flashing across his face. He quickly calmed down and issued orders. “Carefully check the surroundings. Collect anything of value.”
“Yes, my lord.”
The soldiers were well-practiced in looting and swiftly began searching through the black-robed man’s belongings.
“There are goblin children too. They hide them.”
Phield nodded. “Good point. Thanks for the reminder.”
Ashina picked up a scent and immediately led three soldiers to eliminate them.
Turning back to Lydia, the pitiful girl sat collapsed on the ground, tears streaming down her face, her hands trying to cover herself. Fortunately, she had struggled desperately and managed to hold on until the Nightfall Domain army arrived.
The female mage, however, had not been so lucky. Her eyes rolled back, and as Phield approached, the foul stench nearly made him vomit.
“Damn beasts.”
Phield’s heart sank. This world was far too cruel to ordinary people.
He removed his cloak and covered the mage, then turned to Lydia.
“Are you alright? Didn’t I tell you before this place is dangerous? Why did you come back?” Though his words sounded harsh, there was no blame in his tone. He noticed the wound on her leg. “You’re injured. Without treatment, it could get infected.”
“Oh… I can heal myself.”
Lydia barely recovered from her terror, a sense of safety washing over her. Tears began to fall again. She didn’t know why—she was safe now, yet she couldn’t stop crying.
She chanted a few spells, but realized she had no mana left to cast healing magic. Helplessly, she looked at Phield.
“No supplies?” Taking out a bottle of healing potion, Phield placed it in her hand. “Fifty copper coins. If you don’t have the money, work it off.”
“Mm… I will.”
Lydia nodded gratefully. She poured half of it onto her wound, immediately frowning as a pained groan escaped her lips.
Before Phield could say anything—
From behind, the mage whispered “Thank you,” then suddenly slammed her head into a sharp rock.
“Ah! Miss Mei!”
Lydia rushed over, pouring the remaining potion onto Mei’s wound, but it was useless. She broke down crying again.
“…Sigh.” Phield paused for a moment, then spoke gently. “Take your companion’s belongings with you. Deliver them to their family—that’s the greatest comfort you can offer.”
Five minutes later, Ashina had finished eliminating the hidden goblin offspring.
The soldiers had also gathered everything of value.
“Escort Miss Lydia out.”
