Lin Fang crouched beside the mangled carcass of the twin-headed Ironhowl Hyena Queen. Steam rose from its still-warm flesh as he wiped his dagger on its hide. Without hesitation, he drove the blade into the beast’s chest and cut open the thick layer of muscle, following Alpha’s guidance in order to locate the core.
He reached in, pulled the spirit core, and held it up for a second. The orb shimmered faintly, still humming with the monster’s residual energy. Lin Fang slid it into his pouch instead of inventory due to the presence of spectators, then stood up and exhaled, glancing around. “There were a lot of them to extract…”
Anne and Wang Jie were still behind him, brushing mud off their clothes. Their faces were pale under the glow of their torchlight, still couldn’t come into their senses upon watching a Lord Tier monster being slashed away just like that.
The two direwolves stood a few meters away, wagging their tails as if their reverence toward Lin Fang only increased further.
Lin Fang then turned his head slightly toward the couple. “Brother Wang, Ms. Anne, I’m heading deeper. It’s going to get worse from here. I think it’s better if you guys stay here for a while and then get back.”
Anne blinked. “Stay?”
He nodded, looking at the carcasses scattered around them.
“Collect the spirit cores from these bodies. You can keep the heads and claim kill points… Think of it as payment for the shelter earlier. And for your trouble… If you help extract the cores, keep half of them as commission. I will claim back my share when we meet again. Fair deal?”
The offer hung in the air for a moment, faintly absurd as a bloodstained young man casually offering trade terms after slaughtering an entire pack of monsters.
Wang Jie’s mouth twitched. He wanted to say something like We can help you, but before he could, Anne’s hand found his arm. She gave a tiny shake of her head.
Her eyes were wide, nervous — she had seen the way Lin Fang moved, the way the monsters fell like paper. This wasn’t someone you followed into the dark. When someone is strong, it is better to follow them. But when someone is too strong, it is better to stay away from them because not only would they not have time to look after them, but the dangers they will face are basically life-threatening for the weak.
Wang Jie looked at her for an explanation, but this time, he didn’t ask or try to convince her. Instead, he turned his sight back at Lin Fang’s silhouette framed against the misty treeline.
“Alright,” he said at last, voice quiet before bowing slightly and cupping his fists. “Thank you.”
Lin Fang gave a single nod. “Good. And don’t worry about any attacks in my absence. This is the habitat of a predator pack. Other predators don’t come that easily to a place filled with so many predator carcasses as their survival instincts tell them that a stronger predator is lurking around. You can take your time to collect their heads and spirit cores before returning to the safehouse.”
As both of them nodded in unison, Lin Fang stepped forward — one silent stride, then another — disappearing into the darkness beyond the flicker of torchlight.
Behind him, Anne and Wang Jie stood wordless among the carcasses as he vanished deeper into Sector 37.
Meanwhile, inside the command center, Rest Zone.
Feng Xiu leaned back in his chair with a small chuckle, watching the scene. “I guess I was worried for nothing,” he murmured, eyes still fixed on one of the displays. “He’s far stronger than I imagined.”
Commander Nie Rougang almost slammed his hand against the console. “Stronger? That’s a freak! He wiped out a Hyena pack by himself! Even a Lord Tier monster was killed by a slash from his. How the hell was this guy placed in Camp 2? I thought that Ryan was extremely talented, but this guy… is entirely on a different level.”
Feng Xiu only smiled, a calm, knowing curve to his lips. “His name is Lin Fang.”
Both Nie Rougang and Commander Albert turned to him. “What?!” they shouted in unison.
Feng Xiu’s chuckle deepened. “Yes. That Lin Fang, the one you probably heard of — Master Li Chengfeng’s last disciple. And also his inheritor.”
For a second, all three just stared at the screen. Lin Fang’s image flickered under the infrared light, moving deeper into Sector 37 like a ghost.
Commander Nie said, “I only know that Master Li recently told the reporter in an interview that he has already selected his recent disciple Lin Fang as his successor, but I didn’t know that the legacy had already been passed to him…”
“Well, not many knew this truth…” Feng Xiu said, tone soft but edged. “Only a handful of top guilds and high organizations know the truth. You know that Master Li was gravely injured during the Beast Rampage incident while trying to save his niece. After that, he passed his legacy to Lin Fang. But it wasn’t announced publicly yet, as I guess he wanted to protect his disciple.”
Albert’s jaw tightened. “Then… that means….”
Feng Xiu nodded. “Yes. Lin Fang is walking with Master Li’s power. But,” he added after a pause, “there’s a catch. He couldn’t inherit Li Chengfeng’s mana reserves — either due to incompatibility or an incomplete transfer. When I saw him back at the campsite, his mana seemed much lower than his master’s.”
Nie Rougang leaned forward, eyes narrowing. “So what the hell did he inherit then?”
Feng Xiu’s lips curved again. “Well, during the legacy acceptance, the successors would usually go through body reconstruction. I guess his bone strength has become stronger, increasing his strength, reflexes, and speed. At the same time, he might have already received the knowledge of Master Li’s techniques.”
Nie blinked, still in disbelief. “Do you think he acquired the Divine Palm?”
Albert gave a low whistle. “Li Chengfeng was famous for that one… one strike, one end.”
Feng Xiu shrugged lightly. “Who knows? If he did, he’ll show it eventually. But…”
He looked at the clock above the monitors. “This is not even the end of Day 1. We’ve got four more to go.”
The room went quiet again.
