Chapter 244: A Strange Mark
“Finally completed… A cold-persona woman is really difficult to conquer, huh?” Gray muttered to himself as he opened his eyes.
He stretched his arms above his head, causing the coiled snake to also wake up, blinking a few times before letting out a small sound.
“Hiss~”
“Ah… my bad.”
He gently stroked Atriane’s little head before getting up from the bed and heading to the bathroom to wipe his face.
Splash, splash…
“…What is this?”
His eyes widened as he noticed a faint symbol on his black iris.
In the right top corner, a faint… symbol of some kind of crystal remained there, outlined by a faint cyan-blue color.
He rubbed his eye lightly, as if to see if he was day-dreaming, but nothing.
“Any thoughts, Jasmine?”
[…Not really. But it is indeed quite strange… especially when you have it in both of your eyes. And instead of appearing a mark on the pupil, as the Divine Eyes have… You actually have it on your iris.]
[It’s also very small… like it’s leaving space.]
“Are you suggesting that more marks could appear?” he groaned slighly.
If that truly happened, his eyes would truly look ridiculous.
“…It wasn’t there yesterday.”
[No. I would have noticed.]
He clicked his tongue softly.
“So something changed during the night.”
His gaze sharpened.
The only difference was Aurora.
The Soul Chasing Qi.
And the fact that he had fully aligned his soul with the intent of killing when he practiced alone in the dreamworld.
“…Or, it’s related to the law,” he murmured.
[You are still in the Master Realm.]
“I know.”
He splashed water over his face once more, then exhaled slowly and left the bathroom.
Atriane coiled loosely around his forearm as he changed into his academy uniform.
The snake gave a lazy hiss, her small tongue flicking near his wrist before she settled comfortably.
“Let’s go.”
The corridors were already lively when he stepped outside.
Students parted almost unconsciously as he walked through the courtyard. Some whispered. Others lowered their eyes.
A few stared too long before quickly looking away.
Gray ignored all of it.
He headed straight toward the cafeteria.
The scent of warm bread and cooked meat drifted through the air. Plates clattered softly. Morning chatter filled the hall.
He grabbed a tray without hesitation, picked up a portion of roasted meat, fresh bread, a bowl of thick soup, and a cup of tea.
Nothing extravagant.
He scanned the room once, then chose a table near the window and sat down alone.
Atriane slipped off his arm and coiled near his plate, watching the steam rise from the food.
Gray picked up his fork.
“So, what are the possibilities?” he said inwardly as he cut into the meat.
[First, the mark could be a side effect of cultivating Soul Chasing Qi.]
He chewed slowly.
“Unlikely. Aurora didn’t have it.”
[She is a Sovereign Realm existence with an Innate Sword Body. Her physiology is different.]
He paused slightly, agreeing with her thoughts.
“Second possibility?”
[Your Spirit Eyes reached Grandmaster recently. Combined with the use of the Yin-Yang Divine Eyes, there may have been a resonance.]
He dipped the bread into the soup.
“Resonance that leaves a mark?”
[Your body adapts when you grow. Sometimes it manifests physically.
]
Gray took a sip of tea.
“It’s a blue crystal, though,” he muttered inwardly. “If this were some spiritual mutation, shouldn’t it look… symbolic? A rune. A flame. Something abstract.”
[Spiritual signs do not follow your aesthetic preferences.]
A faint twitch pulled at his brow.
“I’m serious.”
[I am as well. Blue is often associated with clarity, depth, and perception. Crystals are associated with storage, refinement, or amplification.]
He leaned back slightly in his chair, fingers tapping once against the table.
“Amplification of sight?”
[Possibly.]
“Or refinement.”
[Also possible.]
He exhaled softly.
“If it were amplification, I would feel a change already.”
[Not necessarily. Foundations are laid before structures rise.]
His gaze drifted to the window again, but his thoughts remained turned inward.
“A crystal grows in layers,” he said quietly. Compressed over time. Pressure. Accumulation.”
[Your soul has been under constant pressure since entering the academy.]
He smirked faintly.
“That’s an understatement.”
[You used my authority that consumes an abnormal amount of soul power. You cultivated Soul Chasing Qi. You have killed repeatedly without mental fracture, and also used the Nullification a lot. Your Spirit Eyes also advanced. A crystallization is not unreasonable.]
His fingers brushed unconsciously beneath his right eye.
“…Crystallization of what?”
Jasmine paused.
[Intent.]
The word lingered.
Gray’s eyes sharpened slightly.
“My killing intent?”
[Not merely killing. Focus, and direction; the narrowing of perception toward a single objective.]
A faint silence stretched between them.
“So my soul is condensing around purpose?”
[That is one hypothesis.]
He let out a low hum.
“If that’s true, then more marks would appear when that intent deepens.”
[Yes.]
“…I’d rather not look like shattered glass.”
[You are concerned about appearance?]
“…It’s just weird.”
Before Jasmine could respond, a sudden presence entered his perception.
“Gray!”
A soft voice, bright and melodic, cut through the cafeteria noise.
He didn’t need to turn to know who it was.
Lyra appeared at his side almost instantly, her silver hair swaying as she leaned down slightly, hands clasped behind her back, as she tilted her head.
“You’re eating alone again,” she said with a faint pout.
“How unfair.”
Gray gave her a sideways glance.
“You’re late.”
“I was not,” she replied, then leaned closer.
“I was watching you.”
He stared at her blankly.
“…Of course you were.”
She giggled softly and slid into the seat beside him without asking, closing the distance so naturally that her shoulder brushed against his arm.
Atriane lifted her head and gave a soft warning hiss.
“Hisss…”
Lyra blinked at the small snake and smiled.
“Oh? Are you guarding him?”
Atriane’s tongue flicked again.
Gray sighed lightly.
“What do you want, Lyra?”
She rested her chin on her palm, elbow on the table, gazing at him with open affection.
“I missed you.”
“You saw me yesterday.”
“Yes.” She nodded seriously.
“That’s why I missed you.”
He stared at her for a long second before looking away.
Lyra did not retreat when he looked away.
If anything, she leaned closer.
Her fingers slid toward his tray without hesitation. She tore off a small piece of bread, dipped it into his soup with slow, deliberate care, letting it soak just enough before lifting it.
Steam curled between them.
“Open.”
“No.” Gray did not even glance at her.
She held the bread there anyway, inches from his mouth.
“I woke up early,” she said softly.
“I fixed my hair. I even chose something cute and walked all the way here.”
A faint pause.
“And you won’t even let me feed you?”
He cut another piece of meat before replying, “You didn’t cook it.”
“That’s not the point.”
“It is.”
Lyra’s cheeks puffed slightly, but her eyes sparkled instead of dimming. She moved the bread closer, brushing it lightly against his lower lip.
Atriane’s head snapped forward with a sharper hiss.
“Hisss!”
Lyra tilted her head at the snake and smiled lightly.
“I’m not stealing him.”
“You’re causing a scene.” Gray finally turned to her, raising an eyebrow.
“No one dares to stare for long,” she replied sweetly.
She wasn’t wrong.
Several nearby students had already looked over, only to quickly drop their gazes the moment Gray’s aura brushed past them.
Lyra lowered her voice.
“Please?”
There was no embarrassment in her tone, only a huge amount of expectationg coming from her sparkling eyes.
Gray looked at her eyes for exactly three seconds.
Then, without a word, he opened his mouth slightly.
Her smile bloomed.
Carefully, she placed the soaked bread past his lips, watching his expression like she was monitoring a sacred ritual.
He chewed, and then swallowed.
“Too much soup,” he said flatly.
“Ahh! You didn’t even taste the love!” Lyra gasped as if wounded.
“I tasted salt.”
She clicked her tongue lightly and took another piece, this time dipping it more carefully. When she lifted it again, her wrist brushed his fingers on purpose.
“Again.”
He stared at her, showing an annoyed look. He knew how much she liked feeding him, but he didn’t know how such a simple thing could make her happy.
He knew that he was acting a little colder than normal, but that crystal on his simply bothered him.
“You’re enjoying this.”
“Yes,” she answered without shame.
He exhaled through his nose and allowed her to feed him once more.
This time, she watched his throat move when he swallowed.
Her eyes softened.
“Good?”
“Acceptable.”
She beamed as if he had praised her cooking.
Without asking, she picked up his cup of tea next.
“I’ll hold it.”
“I can drink on my own.”
“I know.”
She brought it toward his lips anyway.
Gray paused, then leaned forward slightly and took a sip without touching the cup.
Lyra’s shoulders relaxed, pleased beyond reason.
“You’re obedient today.”
“Don’t push it.”
She giggled.
Atriane, apparently deciding Lyra’s threat level had decreased, lowered her head again but kept one golden eye trained on her.
Lyra noticed.
“You don’t trust me,” she murmured to the snake.
“That hurts~.”
Atriane flicked her tongue in response, annoyed by her presence.
Gray continued eating, but Lyra’s attention never left him.
She reached up suddenly, her fingers hovering near his face.
“Don’t move.”
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“Why.”
“There’s something on your eye.”
His hand froze mid-motion.
Jasmine fell silent.
Lyra leaned closer, her face only inches away now, her long brownish-golden hair brushing against his cheek.
“Hold still.”
Her fingers hovered near his right eye, not touching, only observing.
“…It’s faint,” she whispered.
“Like a tiny blue crystal.”
Gray’s gaze sharpened.
“You see it?”
“Of course I do.”
She leaned back slowly, studying him with renewed interest.
“It wasn’t there before.”
“I’m aware.”
Lyra’s expression shifted, curiosity replacing playfulness.
“It’s pretty.”
“It’s strange.”
“I like strange.”
Her fingers returned, this time gently brushing beneath his eye. The touch was soft, almost possessive.
“It suits you,” she murmured.
“Does it react to your perception?” Gray watched her carefully.
“React?” She blinked.
“Does it change when you focus on it?”
Lyra leaned in again, eyes narrowing slightly as she concentrated. For a split second, a faint ripple of spiritual pressure moved between them.
Then she gasped quietly.
“It… flickered slighly!”
Jasmine spoke at once.
[It responds to external perception.]
Gray’s pulse steadied.
“How.”
“When I focused,” Lyra spoke thoughtfully, “it felt like it tightened. Like it was observing me back.”
A faint silence settled.
Lyra’s playful demeanor did not return immediately. Instead, she studied his features carefully, as if analyzing a special creature.
“Gray, what did you do last night?” she uttered softly.
He met her eyes evenly.
“Nothing unusual.”
She stared at him for a long moment, then smiled again.
“Liar.”
Before he could respond, she suddenly leaned forward and pressed her forehead lightly against his shoulder.
“…I wonder when you’re finally going to open up to me,” she murmured, her voice muffled against the fabric of his uniform.
Her fingers curled lightly into his sleeve.
“…You’re clingy.”
“Yes,” Lyra replied without lifting her head.
“And you’re mine.”
The cafeteria noise seemed distant.
Gray looked down at the faint blue crystal reflected in the window beside them.
’…..It can’t be from ’that’, could it?’
