Chapter 277: Class Duels (VIII)
Crack…
The first step cracked the ice.
The second step broke through it entirely, Gray’s weight and intent combined into a forward pressure that Vael’s field hadn’t been built to resist from directly below.
Vael’s eyes sharpened, and his catalyst rings instantly flared up.
THRUUUUM!!!
The ice responded, thickening upward in jagged ridges that rose from the arena floor in a ring around Gray’s position, walls of compressed frost that climbed fast and closed faster, the technique clearly designed to contain rather than damage.
Gray looked at the walls rising around him.
“[✧Swap✧]”
He was outside the ring.
The ice closed on empty space.
Vael’s expression changed slighly, not expecting Gray to simply teleport away from his meticulously crafted trap.
Gray was already moving toward the outer ring students.
The nearest one raised his sword and came forward with the committed energy of someone who had been holding position for a while and was ready to do something with it.
CLANG!!!
Gray caught the strike, redirected it sideways, and used the open line to drive a short thrust at the student’s shoulder that pushed him out of the ring’s formation.
One gap.
He moved through it.
FWOOOOSH!!!
Lyra arrived from his left, golden lightning blazing along her blade, her speed fully committed, the strike a diagonal cut aimed at his guard with everything behind it.
CRACKLE!!!
He caught it on the rapier, and the impact shook his arm to the shoulder, the golden lightning detonating at the contact point and sending visible arcs across the arena floor.
She was stronger than the last time they had exchanged properly.
He noted that without surprise.
She pulled back and came again immediately, no pause, the combination flowing directly from the first strike’s withdrawal into a thrust that used the momentum.
CLANG, CRACK!!!
He deflected the thrust upward and stepped inside her guard, close enough that her next swing couldn’t reach him at full extension.
She adjusted instantly, pulling the swing short and driving her elbow toward his ribs.
He turned his hip into it and let it graze rather than land.
“…You’ve gotten much better,” he smiled lighly,
“That’s normal! I’ve been training,” she replied, already repositioning.
“I can tell.”
Her lightning spiked briefly at that, not from emotion, just output rising with effort.
From the right, something changed in the light.
Gray felt it before he saw it.
The shadow beneath his feet moved independently of the light source above.
Mira.
He stepped left immediately, and the short blade that came from below where his foot had been struck, empty stone instead, Mira rising from the shadow she had been traveling through.
She was closer than the previous engagement had allowed her to get.
Her second strike came before her first had fully landed; the rhythm of her attack built around not giving the initial miss time to become a reset.
Fwip, shhip!
Gray caught both on the rapier’s edge, the contact brief and redirecting, and drove a straight kick at her midsection that she absorbed across crossed arms, the impact pushing her back two meters.
She landed with perfect balance.
Looked at him.
“…How did you notice me?”
“Just… pure instinct.”
She filed that without expression.
FREZEEEE!
The ice suddenly moved again.
Vael had been rebuilding his field during the exchange, the frost spreading back across the ground in the section Gray currently occupied, and this time the technique was different, not walls but a surface change, the ice forming below the arena stone rather than above it, invisible until weight was applied.
Gray felt the thermal change through his feet.
He stepped back onto clear stone.
Vael was watching him.
“You read ground temperature,” Vael said.
“You build from below when the direct approach fails,” Gray stated simply. “The thermal signature arrives before the ice does.”
Vael was quiet for a moment.
Then he changed the approach again.
The temperature across the entire arena dropped simultaneously, Vael’s full output expanding his field from a targeted technique into an environmental one, frost misting the air at knee height across every section of the field, every surface becoming equally cold, the thermal signature Gray had been reading becoming noise rather than signal.
“Clever….”
Gray looked at the mist.
At Vael, whose expression had returned to its patient quality.
At Mira, already dissolving back into shadow at the arena’s edge.
At the outer ring, students are reforming their positions.
At Adrian, who still hadn’t moved.
CRACKLE, BOOM!!!
Lyra came again, and this time Vael moved simultaneously, a lance of compressed ice launching from his catalyst rings at a trajectory that crossed Lyra’s approach line and covered the angle her strike would push Gray toward.
Two techniques. Two timing sequences. One combined trap.
Gray watched both arrive.
He stepped left at the last moment, Lyra’s blade passing his right side, and raised the rapier to deflect the ice lance, the contact shattering it into fragments that sprayed outward across the misted floor.
The fragments hit the mist and vanished into it.
And three of them were suddenly much heavier than ice fragments should have been.
THUD, THUD, THUD!
They hit his coat, his shoulder, his forearm. Not fragments, but condensed projectiles Vael had shaped inside the spray, hidden in the visual noise of the shatter.
Thwack!
Those impacts were real enough that his left arm’s movement was compromised for several seconds, the shoulder impact sitting exactly where Asha’s wind had disrupted it earlier.
Gray looked at his arm before glancing at Vael.
“That was a good one.”
Vael said nothing, but something in his posture registered the acknowledgment.
Mira came from the left shadow, blade already extended, aimed at the arm that Vael’s projectiles had compromised.
She knew.
They were coordinating without signals, the communication happening through the field itself, Vael creating the openings and Mira reading them.
Fwip!
Gray took the blade on the rapier instead of the arm, the contact point awkward and costing him more than it should have, and drove his right shoulder into Mira’s path on the follow-through, the body contact disrupting her shadow reentry before she could use it.
She stumbled.
Stayed material.
He pressed the advantage immediately, two quick strikes that forced her guard high, then a third aimed low that she caught by dropping her center of gravity with impressive speed.
CLANG!!!
She held it firmly.
For the first time in their engagements, she held a direct strike from a fully committed angle without being displaced.
She looked at the contact point between the blades before turning back to his face.
“I adjusted,” she gripped her daggers tightly.
“I noticed.”
She almost smiled.
BOOM!!!
Something hit the arena floor six meters to his right with enough force that the shockwave rolled through the mist and disrupted its surface.
Gray turned.
Adrian had finally moved.
He stood with one hand raised, the impact point still smoking, all four elemental affinities visible now in the way they were visible when he stopped managing their output, fire and water and wind and earth running together.
He looked at Gray.
“Now that I’ve gotten a bit of how you fight, I can finally join the battle,” Adrian spoke with a faint smirk.
Gray barely acknowledged his words.
“The others were impressive,” Adrian continued, even though Gray was ignoring him, “Vael especially. The hidden projectile was excellent.”
“It was.”
This time, Gray actually replied.
“But they haven’t touched you,” Adrian stated.
“Not properly. The shoulder was close.”
“And…?”
Adrian looked at the misted arena around them.
At Lyra, repositioning for another approach.
At Vael, his field has full environmental coverage.
At Mira, returning to the shadow at the field’s edge.
At the remaining outer ring, students.
“All of us… at the same time.”
It was not a question, but more like… an order.
“I’m ready whenever you are,” Gray cracked his neck slighly.
Adrian looked at him for a moment, and then he started laughing.
“Pfttt… pwahahahah!!!”
It was the laugh of someone who was exactly where they wanted to be, doing exactly what they wanted to be doing.
“I really wanted to fight you, you don’t even know how much!!!”
“Focus,” Lyra said from her position, though something in her voice had softened by a fraction.
“I am focused! I can be focused and happy about it simultaneously.”
“Adrian.”
“Alright, alright…” he shook his head slighly.
FWOOOOOOM!!!
His four affinities flared around him, all pointing towards Gray in the form of weapons. A water spear, a fire battleaxe, earth spikes, and even wind swords.
“Pheww~”
Gray whistled at his display of power.
Shing…!
He spun his rapier on his left hand, shifting his stance slighly before closing his eyes and reopening them.
“[Spirit Eyes]”
But surprisingly, instead of waiting for them to make a move, Gray’s lips curled up as he suddenly threw his rapier into the air, causing everyone to look at it.
CRACKLEEE!
A lightning bolt coming directly from the clouds suddenly struck Gray’s body, filling it to the brim with lightning energy.
Gray transferred that energy to his left hand and suddenly raised it.
“[Nine Heavens Thunder Claw]”
