Chapter 47: Family Reunion II
The Mclloyd household had only one car, which was their grandmother’s. Donald had used it to commute since he got back and had parked it at Abraham’s apartment building, having agreed with Nana that she would briefly rely on the local commute.
“What’s on your mind?” Donald asked, having noticed Roy’s troubled expression.
Donald drove, while Roy had his seat belt on in the front passenger’s seat, wearing an oversized black hoodie. Donald, on the other hand, was in a button-up beach t-shirt.
The sedan vehicle navigated through the streets and slowed down as it approached a minor traffic jam.
Roy straightened his back and spoke, “I told myself I won’t think of Master Abraham’s cryptic-ass words, but what he said about the future being set in stone is unsettling.”
Donny chuckled. “Oh, that? Cash God’s just a businessman who wants to make a profit. Do you know the money generated from an S-Class Executioner could literally end world hunger?”
However, Roy shook his head.
“I know that, but Master Abe’s just too weird, like I can’t understand him. Do you know he had stopped signing in BEFORE the false gate incident?”
“Before? Are you sure?”
“Yeah. He told me. Though I’m now realizing I shouldn’t have told you.”
“Hm, he has always been an issue in everyone’s eyes. Remember what he said to Lady Sunfire? He has been in eight false gates so far.
“False gates are rare. One in every two hundred gates, remember? The chances of encountering one are minimal. And we encountered one on your first time challenging a gate-break.”
Roy’s expression turned somber.
“That’s true.”
“Roy, you need to understand something. False gates aren’t random, Roy. Or at least, they don’t seem to be. There are patterns, and one of the patterns is that certain executioners encounter them more frequently than others.”
Roy blinked. “You think Master Abraham is unlucky with gates?”
Donald sighed, running a hand through his hair.
“If there’s a higher chance of encountering false gates when he’s around, we would probably be better off hiring someone else to mentor you, considering you will eventually have to enter gates in the near future.”
A river of tears suddenly flowed down Roy and Donny’s faces. And they cried out in unison, “O-Our five million…”
“Maybe we can ask him for a refund?” Roy suggested tearfully.
Donald cried even more. “An executioner, one as greedy as Abraham? For a refund of five million dollars? Are you insane?”
“Dammit.”
“Abraham has encountered eight false gates in his career,” Donald said. “Eight. Most executioners never encounter even one. The odds of that being pure chance are astronomical.”
Having heard the word ’chance’, Roy remembered his Master’s stats and exclaimed, “Wait! His randomness stat is ’Chaos’!”
“What the fuck? Chaos?” Donald reflexively said and groaned in disappointment. This was all his fault. And now they were stuck with the mysterious executioner.
The two brothers didn’t take long to come to terms with their newfound predicament. Donald was so caught up with the image of a forgotten legend mentoring Roy that he didn’t perform a proper check on him, only that Abraham was quite a capable individual and an old friend.
This was the twisted version of the phrase: Don’t judge a book by its cover.
They were stuck with him, and there was apparently nothing they could do about it.
Around thirty minutes later, they arrived back at their neighbourhood, and shortly after, drove into their driveway.
They were finally back home.
“MY BOYS!” Nana screamed out, not like a normal old lady who was happy to see her grandsons returning home from a long and arduous journey, but like an Italian mafia boss with a scar on his face, who chewed gum constantly, and always had a resting disappointed expression.
“You’re back, eh?”
Donald just got out of the vehicle and walked up to her.
“Nana. We missed you,” he said and stretched his arms to hug her.
“Get out of my face!” She said and pushed him aside as though he were an annoying bug.
Shock plastered Donald’s face as he watched Nana run towards Roy, who had just stepped out of the vehicle, too.
“Roy! Are you okay? I hope they didn’t feed you crap over there. Why do you look like this? Oh, and you stink! You idiot…” she rambled off while touching Roy’s hair and face.
“Wait, you creepy old lady. Stop!” Roy slapped her hands away, but she was relentless.
Donald, however, couldn’t fathom the recently soft Nana treating him in such a way and considered it a glitch in the matrix. He brushed his shoulders and smiled.
“Nana, you know Roy’s practically a young man, right? You should stop treating him like he’s a baby.”
“Seriously! Sheesh,” Roy added and walked past her, aiming for the trunk of the vehicle so he could carry the luggage.
Nana just glared at Donald for that statement. However, he didn’t notice and changed the topic to something more caring.
“Oh, Nana, how was everything over here? I see you really missed us,” he said with a graceful smile.
Nana just clicked her tongue. “Shut your stupid mouth. Who’s smiling with you? Nobody missed you. I was smiling with you because Roy listens to you, but now you want to take his side. Tell me what happened on your trip instead of asking me stupid questions…”
Roy laughed, seeing Donald’s flabbergasted expression.
“Wh… I was happy you were finally treating me with respect and talking nicely. So that was all an act to help you control Roy?!” Donald pointed.
Roy laughed harder and added, “She’s crazy, I’m telling you.”
“And?” Nana folded her arms, wearing a flowery top and wide palazzos. She had short white hair and always wore her square glasses. And of course, she was shorter than all of them and looked fairly alright and healthy for her age.
Donald couldn’t help but swallow his annoyance and help Roy carry the luggage.
“Anyway, we met a few of my old acquaintances who are or were executioners, but—”
“Don’t continue with that dumb lie. I know what your ’expedition’ really was about,” She cut him off.
“You told her?” Donald asked Roy, shocked. He and Roy had agreed to lie to her so she wouldn’t worry, but the boy actually went behind his back and spilled the beans before they had even left!
Roy’s laugh instantly turned to a forced frown.
“She made some nice meals that morning we left. It didn’t feel nice that we were lying to her.”
Donald palmed his face. “Wait, so you told her the truth UNPROVOKED?”
Nana slapped Donny’s shoulder right then. “Shut up. Don’t scream at my loser grandson. He did the right thing. Unlike you.”
“I’m not a loser, for God’s sake!”
