Chapter 71: Double Level-Up!
“Roy,” Master Abraham grabbed Roy’s shoulder, snapping him out of his reverie, “are you alright?”
Roy flinched slightly and nodded. “I-I’m fine.”
’As fine as I can be after leveling up twice at once!’ he said inwardly and gave Master Abraham a thumbs up, secretively informing him that the idea was a success.
The APC sped through the streets of the fallen city, aiming to shake off the Mother Spider that was after them.
Master Abraham had factored this into his plan, and the solution was simply to enter the territory of the Fallen Beast’s enemy.
Hence, by the time they got to where the gigantic bird from before Maater Abraham didn’t allow Roy look at directly, the Fallen Beast had given up.
In the vehicle, the survivors sat in the back seats but were probably still shell-shocked to talk about their ordeal.
“How are you feeling?” The last survivor, known as Dr. Gretsch, had turned around and asked the only woman in the vehicle with straight, short black hair, Dr. Sally.
“…Better.” She didn’t seem too keen on conversing.
“What about the others?” Dr. Gretsch asked, oscillating gazes between Wolfman, Dr. Sally, and eventually Black Zero.
“What do you think?” asked Dr. Sally rudely, albeit in a low tone.
Dr. Gretsch sat in the captain’s chair, Wolfman sat at the left seat behind, while Dr. Sally sat at the right.
Wolfman had his hands folded and pointed backward with his thumb. “Embolden is lying back there. We have to get her body back to her family.”
Of course, Dr. Gretsch knew the other executioner lady was dead, but Wolfman pointing this fact out made it clear to Master Abraham, and even Dr. Gretsch did something to cause this entire thing. Also evident from the way Dr. Sally behaved.
Dr. Gretsch simply cocked his head and kept quiet.
Whereas Roy manifested his system cube with a happy and melancholic grin on his face. Happy about the massive exp loot and expected rewards, and a bit sad about the lives they couldn’t rescue. Out of seven experts onthe field mission, four were dead.
Regardless, he couldn’t remain downtrodden after reading the system messages.

’Whoa, really? My system shop has new items!’ Roy wanted to fistbump the air but held his excitement.
He asked to view the new item(s) in the shop, but he was only able to after signing in.
The military vehicle came to a halt shortly after, hidden safely in the underground basement of some falling building. The inhabitants of the vehicle let out a sigh of relief that no abyss creatures lived here, yet.
“Let’s skip the introductions for now,” Master Abe said and stood up from the driver’s seat, facing them. “Tell me what happened.”
Sally glared at Dr. Gretsch, and Wolfman remained quiet.
Dr. Gretsch felt the gazes on him and let out a deep sigh.
“My name is Dr. Hans Gretsch. As you should have been briefed by Mr. Professor, we were on a field mission to recover an important sample. My team was told they were recovering a rare specimen of abyss flora, but…”
Dr. Gretsh glanced back guiltily at Sally and Wolfman before returning his gaze to Black Zero, who patiently waited for him to continue instead of immediately asking, “But what?”
Roy listened attentively from where he sat.
“…We were actually recovering samples from a lost specimen at an abandoned research lab. It was meant to be top secret, only between Mr. Professor and me. My team members protested, as they never intended to enter this deep into this overrun city. I— I underestimated the dangers. So, on our way, our vehicle was attacked by that Fallen Beast, and it released that sleeping gas you saw. Now, we’re here.”
Master Abraham let a few seconds of silence pass by before asking, “How did you escape the cocoon?”
This was an entirely reasonable question. If even someone as resilient as Wolfman couldn’t force himself awake and free himself, then the skinny Dr. Gretsh shouldn’t be able to.
However, he let out a slight chuckle and palmed his forehead.
“My surprise too, actually. Who would’ve thought that I could be granted a system at this age?”
Everyone in the vehicle had their eyes widen, but Roy was the first to ask, eager to know, “What’s your system’s name?”
Wolfman heard this and let out a bold laugh, also moved by how fortunate such an encounter was. “AHAHAHA! SPLENDID!”
Dr. Gretsh smiled and answered Roy, “It’s confidential, for now. Anyway, I signed in and woke up to darkness. Light doesn’t peer through their cocoons and insulates the warmth. I was awake for an entire day when I heard utter silence. The spiders had left the web, and I decided it was now or never.”
’Tsk. Don’t wanna tell me your system name, huh?’ Roy didn’t listen past that first phrase and frowned inwardly. His gaze moved past Dr. Gretsch and landed on Sally at the back. She folded her legs up to her chest on the seat and covered herself with a blanket Roy provided her.
A dark shadow hovered over her eyes, and it was clear that if given the chance, she might strangle Dr. Gretsch. Leaving the city for a normie was already a stretch, but taking her on a deadly mission without informing her?
’Nah, Dr. Gretsch earned the hate. But there’s a bigger elephant in the room,’ Roy lampooned. He couldn’t voice it aloud, but to be frank, the three survivors stank to high heaven!
Master Abraham nodded and voiced, “I will send a communique to Mr. Professor that you’ve been rescued. By tomorrow, you should be back at the City Gate. In the meantime, there’s a bathroom down the corridor, to your right. There’s a change of clothes in the column on the left wall.”
Dr. Sally quickly stood up and muttered, “Thank you,” following the directions Master Abraham just laid out.
Dr. Gretsch looked like he wanted to say something, but he held his tongue and just said, “Thank you… Executioner?”
“Abraham,” Master Abe said and sat back down in his seat.
“Thank you, Executioner Abraham,” Dr. Gretsch completed and faced Roy, “And who are you?”
“It’s confidential, for now,” Roy said and chuckled, but Dr. Gretsch replied with a scoff.
Wolfman at the back laughed audibly once again.
“And Mr. Wolfman, what’s your name? Like… your actual name?” Roy asked.
The D-Class Executioner smiled and puffed his chest.
“I AM WOLFMAN!”
“He only gives his real name to people he trusts, is what he told us,” Dr. Gretsch said with a resigned expression.
’Lol. A nutjob executioner, cool.’ Roy just faced ahead, focusing on the floating neon cube before him that spun on its axis.
It was time to increase his stats.
