Chapter 70: Escape!

The Mother Spider was a towering mass of destruction. Her dark shell armor glistened under the sun, protecting most of the hairy, dark purple flesh. Eight thick legs, each as thick as six lampposts tied together. Every step it took made the earth shake.

The dust raised by its landing cleared, and Roy could finally see the face of this Fallen Beast.

Twelve eyes on its head, with four being the largest, bore them down with undeniable killing intent. But instead of the two front mandibles normal spiders had called the chelicerae, this creature borne in the depths of the Abyss had a vertical set of spiked, wicked, needle-like teeth.

Roy froze in place. Death was literally smiling at him.

Master Abraham, however, hardly knew fear and was already charging at the Fallen Beast, whereas the man who freed himself was pushed to the wall due to the shockwave from her landing.

The ground shook vehemently as the Mother Spider charged at them.

“Get back into the tunnel!” Master Abraham ordered Roy and manifested multiple circles. “Get to the last target!”

Roy took one glance at the Mother Spider and the expert of the field mission team and hesitated no further.

He didn’t need anyone to inform him of the updated plan. Right now, Master Abraham would keep the Fallen Beast company while he rescued the final targets.

“Goddammit!” Roy landed with a thud on the floor of the utility tunnel. There was no time to climb down the ladder gently.

Luckily, he reinforced his legs with his [2x Multiplier] skill just in the nick of time and managed not break his legs from the fall. No time to waste, he sprinted towards the west tunnel.

The seven access points beneath the Web were the north, east, west, the centre, and the south, which was actually south-central and south-west. Master Abraham’s clone handled the Mother Spider and her hatchlings in the north, while the original and Roy extracted the first three targets from south-central.

After that, they went over to the centre, and then the east, with the APC, the two rescued individuals, and the final targets waiting at the west.

Roy soon caught up to them, with D-Class Executioner, Wolfman, springing up from where he sat with the short lady at the sound of him coming.

“EMERGENCY?!” The brutish man asked eagerly.

“The Mother Spider caught on to our plan,” Roy said, immediately climbing the steel-bar ladder. “I need to check the final cocoons.”

He pointed at the woman sitting in the corner and quickly added, “And bring her up. Our ride is already here.”

Roy pushed the manhole cover aside and climbed out of it. Here, on this part of the web, there weren’t any spiders, but there were a ton of webs still.

Unlike Black Zero, he didn’t have a chainsword to cut through them, so he had to be careful not to allow himself get stuck on them.

’Wait, why do I have to do it myself?’ Roy thought and instead, reached into the cross bag slung on his shoulder and began placing the bombs.

Two minutes later, when Wolfman and the short lady emerged from the manhole, Roy pointed the targets out to the enthusiastic executioner and asked him to bring them down.

At the same time, the APC drove close, and the camouflage came undone. Roy helped carry the lady in, as she still couldn’t move her limbs effectively. It seemed the spiders had paralytic poison.

Running back to the cocoons, Roy saw that Wolfman had already torn them open. But contrary to his wide smile, he was a bit sunken.

One cocoon contained a Weak Beast, while the other was a lady in tactical, military executioner gear, similar to the one Wolfman was donned in, though the chest part of his clothing was torn off.

The middle-aged woman’s face was blue and slimy. She had died of suffocation, and the spiders were already halfway into making her their dinner.

’She’s… dead,’

that was the only thought going through Roy’s mind. An executioner, possessing a system and unique abilities and skills, could die just like that… at the hands of a Fallen Beast. This wasn’t supposed to be so surprising, but seeing it play out in reality for the first time was still heartbreaking.

Wolfman squatted beside his former colleague, staring at her corpse as though grappling with the reality of it.

“I’m so sorry.” Roy tried to console him. “What was her name?”

“Embolden…” Wolfman voiced, his tone normal for the first time since Roy met him a few minutes ago.

“Embloden. I bet she was cool.” Roy didn’t want to rush the mourning process, but his mind kept flipping back to Master Abraham, currently in battle with the Mother Spider.

They had to get away so he could blow the Web up to smithereens.

And just to verify his worries, the swarm of abyss spiders crawled into view, rushing at the intruders. Turned out, Wolfman wasn’t so gentle when he ripped the cocoons down from the Web.

Roy gritted, pulled out his pistol, and ran towards the APC.

“I’m sorry for your loss, but you have to fight! The others aren’t here yet,” he said to the D-Class Executioner.

Wolfman grinned and raised his body, facing the incoming spider army.

“I AM WOLFMAN!”

After saying that, the brutish man literally grew in size, easily towering over size feet with bulging muscles that strained his clothing. He grinned widely and cracked his neck.

The weak abyss spiders jumped down to the concrete and charged at the intruders.

“I AM WOLFMAN!”

Wolfman screamed, biting and ripping the weak beasts alike with bare hands and teeth. He was more of a beast than a man.

Roy hung back in the APC and constantly shot at the incoming swarm, unconsciously not confident enough to face abyss creatures without Master Abraham around.

Just three minutes into their defense battle, Black Zero emerged from the tunnel with the last survivor in tow and sealed the cover with a materialized block of cube.

Master Abraham moved swiftly and cut down that spiders closest to Wolfman and pulled back, while Roy helped the last survivor climb into the APC faster.

As Wolfamn pulled back, he carried the body of his fallen comrade, Embolden, and entered the APC through the back, same for Master Abraham.

And without a reminder, Hillary zoomed off, with the abyss spiders scrambling over each other to get to them.

Seeing the mass of them, Roy was surprised to find that they had barely even gotten the accurate number of just how numerous these creatures were.

And with a look from Master Abraham, he took out the detonator from the cross-body bag that was full of explosives, handed to him by Master Abe, and pressed his thumb down on the button!

Immediately, fire erupted from somewhere within the mass of spiders, tearing them apart and charing them in a loud, fiery fury!

Multiple explosions were heard, too, but Roy could hardly pay attention.

In his mind, the flurry of overlapping whispering voices was quite disorienting.
