Chapter 247: The Grim Reaper’s Reputation
Chapter 247: The Grim Reaper’s Reputation
Thud! Thud!
The heavy sound of footsteps echoed in the still atmosphere. It was as if the newcomers were taking their time to reveal themselves, savoring the tension they created.
Thoren looked toward the narrow passage for a moment and then averted his gaze. He did not care what game they were playing, as long as they knew what was good for them.
They would not target him, or so he assumed.
Thus, he focused his attention on the Veinlurker Larvae. His undead servants struck their weapons continuously against the writhing horde.
Although the Veinlurker Larvae were difficult to kill and a pain in the ass for any ordinary awakener, they had finally met their match.
Undeads had nothing to fear in this dark place.
Pain meant nothing to them, even as their bones were gnawed.
Even though the Veinlurker Larvae had eaten deep into their bones, that did not affect their battling speed at all.
[Level Up!]
Just then, a notification flashed before Thoren’s eyes, but he chose to ignore it completely. His eyes were still fixed on the ever increasing swarm of Veinlurker Larvae.
’How many are there?’ he could not help but wonder.
He thought for a moment before he raised his head to look at the other side of the aisle.
The old praying altar stood with cracks spread around it like a web of decay. On the altar, something caught his attention immediately.
’What is that?’ he muttered under his breath.
Without hesitation, he commanded his undead servant to retrieve the object. Even though he needed to increase his strength as quickly as possible, he could not stay in the ruin forever farming the Veinlurker Larvae.
More importantly, now that he had leveled up, the experience he gained from each Veinlurker Larva was reduced by half.
He would need twice the work just to receive the same experience points.
To him, that was a complete waste of precious time.
He could use this chance to search the ruins for rare treasure and also hunt for more powerful beasts.
With that decision made, his attention shifted away from the Larvae. He focused his gaze on the second undead servant that was approaching the praying altar.
Looking at his undead servant, Thoren could not help but crease his brow. He glanced over his shoulder for a brief moment.
But he behaved as if nothing was amiss, keeping his expression neutral.
Slowly, the undead servant arrived before the altar and reached out to take the mysterious item.
With the item firmly in hand, the undead returned under the constant, gnawing attacks of the Veinlurker Larvae.
It was as if the creatures were trying desperately to stop him from taking the object.
But their frantic attempt was completely futile against the mindless undead.
To be safe, Thoren commanded the undead to toss the item directly to him.
He was sure that if the undead came closer, the Veinlurker Larvae would change targets and attack him instead.
Whoosh!
The undead servant tossed the item through the air, and Thoren reached out his hand to catch it smoothly.
The moment his fingers closed around the object, detailed information appeared before his eyes.
[Veinthread Cloak]
[Grade: Low Bronze Grade]
[Description: Slight resistance to physical attacks. Has the ability to shield the user from creature perception that is two levels above their current level.]
Looking at the description, Thoren was slightly disappointed. All these items were of little real use to him.
With his Awakened Soul, only a handful of people could threaten him in the mental department.
Still, a mosquito’s leg was better than nothing.
However, just as he prepared to put the Cloak into his inventory, the previously quiet dark passage echoed with hurried, heavy footsteps.
“Who would have expected our luck to be so good?” a voice boomed, followed by cruel laughter.
From the shadow, a young man with bulging muscles appeared. Fastened on his back was a massive, blood stained machete.
His step was large and confident, almost arrogant.
He was a Berserker.
Behind him, four more people emerged from the darkness, looking at Thoren with open disdain and contempt.
“We finally meet,” he added, stopping a couple of feet from Thoren. “Thoren Starfall.”
Hmm?
Thoren creased his brow and looked at the Berserker for a moment, wondering how this stranger knew his name.
Since he had arrived on the second floor, he had never disclosed his full name to anyone. Moreover, he did not remember meeting this group before at any time.
Watching the quiet, unflinching Thoren, the Berserker’s sneer deepened with amusement. “Perhaps you prefer your other name. The Grim Reaper.”
Those behind him could not help but snicker when they heard the words Grim Reaper. Their eyes flashed with mockery and disdain.
From the corner of their eyes, they glanced at the two undead servants without any care or concern.
To them, the undead servants looked weak and easily disposable. They believed they could destroy them whenever they wished.
So they foolishly thought.
Looking at the group that seemed to know everything about him, Thoren did not have any change in his expression. His face remained a calm mask.
“Who are you?” His tone was calm and casual, completely unbothered by their intimidating presence.
Stunned.
The group widened their eyes slightly. Thoren’s calmness left them bewildered and unsettled. Many would have been flustered or even lost their composure when they found their secret exposed.
Yet this man stood like a stone wall.
“The rumors did not lie,” the Berserker responded, looking at Thoren from head to toe with new respect.
“Your deeds on the first floor have spread among the major forces. And now, I cannot wait to witness them myself,” he continued, his tone filled with confidence and pride.
“I want to see the Grim Reaper who made everyone tremble in fear,” a wide grin crept up his face. “No one has survived against my machete and lived to tell the tale.”
“Not even you, the so-called Grim Reaper. Today, I shall capture you and all of your little undead minions.” He took a heavy step forward, creating a deep, ominous thud on the stone floor.
Behind him, his men moved swiftly, flanking Thoren on both sides like wolves circling prey.
Yet Thoren remained completely calm, his breathing steady and his eyes clear.
“Who are you?” he asked once again, his voice carrying no trace of fear.
To him, that question was the most important. As for their threats, he would deal with them later, one by one.
“We are your worst nightmare,” the Berserker responded with a savage grin. “We are from…”
Whoosh!
