When the Jackal Beastmen saw Thoren walking alone without a leash, they could not hide their shock. Some looked at him with contempt and suspicion. Some looked at him as if they were staring at a rare, foolish specimen.

Yet none of them tried to stop him from walking deeper.

But the most curious ones could not help but follow him. Their actions were obvious and heavy, and their footsteps echoed loudly behind him.

Finally, he arrived at the biggest building in the inner region. The house was the only building with a protected wall surrounding it completely.

Standing at the entrance were two Jackal Beastmen guards. In their hands were long spears made from the bones of unknown beasts.

A strong, intimidating aura emanated from their bodies, telling everyone to stay far away.

Yet Thoren was undeterred by this display of force.

When their fiery eyes locked on Thoren, their expressions turned grim, and they gripped their weapons tightly, ready to strike.

“Human,” one of them stepped forward, raising his spear. He spoke in rough, broken human language. “Step back now.”

Thoren halted his track a couple of feet from the Jackal Beastmen and spoke clearly.

“Tell your chief that I have information about the jade pendant,” he announced.

The Jackal Beastman did not have any change in his stern expression. His hostile gaze locked on Thoren for a long moment before he slowly withdrew his bone spear.

“Wait here,” he commanded and left through the entrance gate.

Seeing this unexpected development, all the Jackal Beastmen who had come to watch the humans be killed were stunned.

Their sharp serrated teeth were widened in shock, and their eyes were filled with disbelief.

They looked at each other and began to communicate rapidly in their guttural language.

Although Thoren could not understand their words, from their expressions he could guess what they were talking about.

Of course, they were talking about him and, more importantly, about the jade pendant that seemed to be so important to their chief.

Even though they were stunned when they saw the Chief’s personal guard not attacking the human immediately, many still refused to depart. They all wanted to see if the chief would actually grant the human an audience.

They did not have to wait for too long. The entrance gate was pushed open from inside, and the Jackal Beastman guard came back out.

With a cold, unreadable expression, he stared at Thoren and spoke in human language.

“Come with me.”

With that single word, he turned and walked back toward the building entrance gate.

Thoren was not surprised by this invitation. Without any hesitation, he followed the Jackal Beastman into the Chief’s building compound.

Inside the compound, everything was plain and blank. Except for the occasional guard he saw standing at intervals, he saw nothing else of importance.

At the center of the compound stood a larger building, and the structure was slightly more pleasing to the eyes compared to those outside the walls.

The Jackal guard led him into what looked like a reception hall. The ground was sturdy, dry, and smooth to walk on. At the other end of the hall was a small throne made of bone and leather.

Thoren stood in the center of the hall, waiting patiently. His eyes scanned the room, noting every entrance and exit.
