Chapter 225: Return of Jaenor
Vorathys tried one final assault. She channeled everything she had into amplifying Suyajna’s emotions—trying to overwhelm her with guilt, with the horror of what she’d done to her own son, and with feelings that would break even divine will.
Suyajna felt the attack hit. Felt emotions surge that should have crushed her. Guilt for using Jaenor. Horror at her own actions. Love for the son she’d sacrificed. Remorse that should have been soul-destroying.
And she laughed harder.
“You think I don’t feel guilt?” she asked, her voice carrying dark amusement.
“You think I don’t understand the enormity of what I’ve done?
I do.
Completely.
I feel every bit of it. And I don’t care. Because this—” she gestured to herself, to her ascended form, to the power radiating from her, “—this is worth it. Worth any price. Worth any sacrifice. Even my own son.”
Vorathys’s will broke. She couldn’t comprehend someone who felt guilt that profoundly and simply chose to ignore it. The contradiction shattered her understanding of emotional reality.
Suyajna struck while the Sovereign was reeling, and Vorathys fell.
Not dead, Suyajna had been careful about that, but critically wounded. Deliberately kept alive to suffer.
Pyrraxis screamed.
Aethormor was the only male Sovereign remaining. He’d been maintaining distance through spatial manipulation, but now he was alone.
The target.
The next to die.
He looked at Suyajna, at the Daemon God who’d achieved impossible power through the most ruthless means imaginable, and made a decision.
“I can’t beat you,” he admitted.
“Not alone. Probably not even with help at this point. You’ve become something new. Something we’re not equipped to handle.”
“Finally,” Suyajna said.
“Someone with sense.
So you’ll surrender? Acknowledge my superiority?”
“No,” Aethormor said.
“I’ll delay you. Give others time to respond. Time to prepare.”
His power flared, and space itself warped around them. Distances became meaningless. What was near became far. What was far became near. He was creating a maze of distorted structure that would make reaching him nearly impossible.
Suyajna snarled and began systematically breaking through his defenses. She was powerful enough to do it, given time. But time was what Aethormor was trying to buy.
And as they fought, as the last standing male Sovereign desperately held off an opponent he couldn’t defeat, something happened.
Kailthys moved.
“Suyajna,” she said, her voice carrying harmonics that made reality resonate.
“You’ve made quite a mess.”
“Queen,” Suyajna acknowledged, though her tone showed no deference.
“Come to join your dying Sovereigns? I’d be happy to add your corpse to the collection.”
“You’re powerful,” Kailthrys said, ignoring the threat.
“More powerful than you were. You are more powerful than I anticipated you could become. But you’re not powerful enough to kill me.”
She took a step forward, and space around her contorted.
Suyajna felt it and hesitated for the first time. This was different. The Sovereign Queen wasn’t just another divine being. She was the apex of their hierarchy. The one who could, if necessary, rewrite the rules that even other Sovereigns followed.
“You might even wound me before I end you. But the outcome isn’t in question. I am beyond what you’ve achieved. So I’ll offer you a choice instead.”
She gestured, and golden energy formed shapes in the air.
“Surrender. Submit to judgment. Accept punishment for what you’ve done: the murders, the manipulation, and the destruction. And in exchange, I’ll let you live. Imprisoned, yes. Diminished, certainly. But alive. Still existing.”
“Or?” Suyajna asked.
“Or I erase you,” Kailthrys said simply.
“Not kill. Erase. Make it so you never existed at all. Every moment you’ve lived, every action you’ve taken, every thought you’ve had, all of it undone. Reality rewritten to exclude your presence completely.”
Other ascendants looked baffled, wondering what Kailthrys was doing. Suyajna just killed three of their men, and she was just letting her go. Why?
Suyajna stared at her, weighing options.
Imprisonment versus erasure.
Neither was acceptable.
Both meant defeat.
But before she could respond, before Kailthrys could move, something happened.
Something that made even the Sovereign Queen freeze.
Something that made every being present, god and daemon and demon alike, feel sudden, overwhelming dread.
The sky darkened.
Not the normal darkness of night or the shadow of storm clouds.
This was absolute.
As if darkness itself had become a physical thing, a presence descending to swallow the world.
And it was getting darker.
Impossibly darker.
The kind of black that suggested not just absence of light, but consumption of everything.
A massive dark entity that wanted to eat reality itself.
The temperature dropped.
Not from cold, but from something deeper. The warmth that sustained life, that allowed existence to continue, was being drained away. Pulled into that descending darkness.
Kailthrys looked up, and her golden eyes widened with something she rarely felt.
Nervousness.
And she frowned deeply, staring at the darkness.
She chuckled as she shook her head; she was feeling nervous.
“AH!” she sighed heavily, making everyone around feel her energy surge. “To feel such emotion, am I becoming too old?”
She could tell that the presence entering the mortal realm was far more dangerous than Suyajna, and it made her feel something she had experienced in a millennium.
“Now what do we have here?” she said.
She raised her eyebrow as she said, “That’s not possible though. The Interplanar Void is sealed. Nothing that powerful should be able to cross back without—”
She stopped, realization dawning on her.
Magdalyna.
“What is that thing?” Chronalis said. She could feel her body trembling as the darkness spread, and so did the two of her people.
Aethormor was watching with seriousness on his face; he was watching the figure coming from a certain point.
“Jaenor,” Suyajna whispered, and for the first time, genuine fear entered her voice.
“That’s… that’s my son. But he should be dead. Should be completely consumed. I took everything from him. There’s no way he could—”
The darkness above them opened.
Not like a portal.
Like nature being torn apart by something too powerful to be contained by normal spatial boundaries.
And through that tear, a figure descended.
He came slowly.
Deliberately.
Power radiated from him in waves that made the air itself scream.
His eyes, those impossible eyes that held depths of abyss, fixed on the battlefield below.
On Suyajna specifically.
And in those eyes was judgment.
Absolutely inescapable.
Terrifying even to gods.
Jaenor Arkwright had returned.
And he was so much more than what had been taken.
Jaenor stood suspended in the air above the devastated battlefield, power radiating from him in waves that made reality itself tremble. His eyes, which seemed like eyes of abyss itself, surveyed the scene below with an intensity that made even divine beings uncomfortable.
The Sovereigns who remained conscious stared up at him with varying expressions.
The time goddess Chronalis, lay wounded on the scorched ground, her legs still severed, temporal distortions bleeding from the injury.
She looked at Jaenor with something between hope and terror, hope that his return might shift the balance, terror at what he’d clearly become.
Pyrraxis would have been there, but her elemental form had been the first to fall to Suyajna’s assault. Her essence was scattered across the battlefield, slowly trying to reconstitute but failing.
Vorathys, the death goddess, stood at the periphery. Her domain over endings gave her unique perception; she could see what Jaenor had become and could sense the fundamental changes in his nature. And what she saw made even her, who commanded death itself, take an involuntary step backward.
Aethormor, still maintaining his spatial distortions to delay Suyajna, froze mid-technique. The daemon goddess herself had gone utterly still, her black eyes fixed on the son she’d consumed, the vessel she’d used, now returned and radiating power that exceeded her own.
The Seven Sins—Pride, Wrath, Lust, Greed, Sloth, Envy, and Gluttony had gathered at the forest’s edge when they felt the darkness descending.
They stared at something that wasn’t what they’d expected. The daemon god had manifested as planned.
But this… this was something else entirely.
Something their planning hadn’t accounted for.
Even Morgana, standing beside Suyajna with origin energy still blazing around her hands, looked shaken. She thought Jaenor was dead, and every ounce of power in Jaenor was taken by Suyajna, and what she saw before them was completely unbelievable. He looked like he was filled with power and strong energies. This transcended everything she’d anticipated.
And at the center of it all stood Kaelthrys.
The Sovereign Queen.
She alone showed no fear.
No uncertainty.
She was only nervous for a few seconds, but she regained her composure soon.
Her golden eyes met Jaenor’s dark ones with absolute confidence, with the certainty of someone who’d existed at the peak of cosmic hierarchy for so long that surprise had become a foreign concept.
Her form remained steady while others trembled. Her presence remained dominant while others quailed. This was a being who governed authority itself, who’d faced threats that could unmake reality and emerged victorious every time.
