Chapter 229: You are not my mother!!
“You think one lucky strike makes you superior?” She snarled, dark energy gathering around her hands.
“I’ve existed for millions of years. I’ve survived the Separation. I’ve been killed and resurrected more times than your entire bloodline has drawn breath. You’re powerful, yes. But you’re still just a child playing with forces you don’t fully understand.”
“Then educate me,” Jaenor said flatly.
Suyajna struck.
She unleashed everything she had: beams of concentrated darkness. The assault was overwhelming, sufficient to obliterate mountains.
Jaenor walked through it.
The attacks struck him, direct hits that should have annihilated anything they touched. But they simply dissipated against his presence, absorbed and neutralized by power that transcended what she could generate.
He reached her while she was still attacking, while she was pouring everything into techniques that weren’t even slowing him down.
His hand shot out and grabbed her by the face, his fingers pressing into her temples with casual strength that made her attacks sputter and fail.
“Lesson one,” Jaenor said, his voice cold and clinical.
“Power without foundation is just noise.”
He lifted her off the ground by her head and slammed her into the ground with devastating force. The impact created another crater, this one fifty feet deep, and Suyajna’s scream of pain and outrage echoed across the battlefield.
Before she could recover, before she could even process what had happened, Jaenor yanked her back up and threw her skyward.
She tumbled through the air, disoriented, trying to manifest flight techniques to stabilize herself. She managed to arrest her momentum perhaps two hundred feet up, her dark energy flaring as she regained control.
Jaenor appeared above her.
She had no idea how. No spatial distortion, no teleportation signature. He simply existed in a position he hadn’t occupied a moment before, floating in the air as if gravity was a suggestion he chose to ignore.
“Lesson two,” he said.
“Speed you can’t track is indistinguishable from inevitability.”
His fist drove into her stomach with force that expelled all the air from her lungs. The blow carried enough power to send her hurtling back toward the ground like a meteor, and when she struck, the impact was audible for miles.
Suyajna lay in the newly formed crater, gasping for breath, her daemon body struggling to heal damage that went deeper than mere physical injury. Each of Jaenor’s strikes carried something more; his Chaos Origin nature was interfering with her regeneration, making recovery agonizingly slow.
She tried to stand, to manifest defensive barriers, to do anything that might give her a moment to regroup.
Jaenor was already there, standing at the crater’s edge, looking down at her with an expression that mixed contempt and profound disappointment.
“You know what the pathetic part is?” he asked conversationally.
“You actually believed you were strong. Believed that consuming me would make you powerful enough to challenge Sovereigns, to reshape the realm according to your vision. But you were always weak.”
“I killed three Sovereigns!” Suyajna spat, blood spattering from her mouth.
“I slaughtered gods! How dare you call me weak!”
“You ambushed exhausted Sovereigns who were already weakened from other battles,” Jaenor corrected.
“You barely managed to kill three of the weakest among them before the Sovereign Queen arrived and shut you down. That’s not a strength. That’s opportunism. The tactics of a scavenger, not a conqueror.”
He dropped into the crater beside her, and his presence made the air itself feel heavy with pressure.
“Whereas I—” he grabbed her by the throat and lifted her effortlessly, “—I died. Was consumed completely. And I came back stronger. That’s the difference between us. You steal power and call it ascension.”
Suyajna clawed at his hand, her nails, more like talons now, raking across his skin. They should have torn flesh and should have drawn blood. Instead, they just scraped harmlessly across what might as well have been diamond.
“Let me demonstrate exactly how outmatched you are,” Jaenor said.
He hurled her upward again, and this time he followed. They rose together, her tumbling helplessly, him ascending with perfect control, until they were perhaps half a mile above the battlefield.
At that height, with the devastated landscape spread below them like a map, Jaenor caught her again.
This time, by her ankle.
And he swung her.
Like a hammer thrower, he spun in place, building momentum, and then released. Suyajna flew horizontally, her scream cutting off as the air was driven from her lungs by acceleration, and she struck a distant mountain with enough force to shatter the peak.
Avalanches of stone and ice cascaded down the mountain’s face as Suyajna’s body carved a path through solid rock. She came to rest perhaps three hundred feet into the mountain, buried under tons of debris.
The watching Sovereigns, Sins, and Morgana could only stare in horrified fascination. This wasn’t a battle.
It was humiliation.
A parent disciplining a misbehaving child, if that parent possessed power to reshape reality and that child had delusions of godhood.
Chronalis, the time goddess, whispered to Vorathys beside her, “He’s not even trying. That’s casual strength. Not his full power. Just… playing with her.”
“I know,” Vorathys replied, her death-attuned senses giving her unique insight into what she was witnessing.
“He could end her instantly. Could simply will her out of existence, and reality would comply. But he’s not. He’s making a point. Showing everyone present that she was never the threat she believed herself to be.”
At the Sovereign Queen’s position, Kaelthrys watched with an expression that was difficult to read.
Genuine interest in what he was becoming, in what his transformation represented for the cosmic order.
“Fascinating,” she murmured.
“He’s not just powerful but controlled. Using exactly the force necessary to achieve his purpose, no more, no less. He would make an efficient warrior.”
On the mountain, Suyajna tore her way free of the rubble. Her elegant form was battered now, clothing torn, skin showing cracks like fractured porcelain, and blood leaking from dozens of wounds. But she was still alive, still functional, her daemon nature keeping her from complete breakdown.
“ENOUGH!” She roared, and her voice carried a force that made the mountain itself tremble.
“I am a goddess! I am ascended! I am—”
Jaenor appeared in front of her so fast she didn’t even see him move. His hand came up in a dismissive backhand slap that sent her flying horizontally again, carving another path through the mountain before she tumbled out the other side and fell, accelerating toward the ground far below.
She hit a frozen lake with enough force to vaporize the water instantly, creating a crater in the lakebed that was immediately flooded by water rushing back in. Steam erupted in massive clouds as superheated rock met ice-cold water.
Jaenor descended slowly, landing at the crater’s edge, looking down at where Suyajna lay in shallow, boiling water.
“You keep calling yourself a goddess,” he observed.
“But gods don’t get swatted around like insects. Gods don’t bleed from simple strikes. Gods don’t embarrass themselves by boasting about power they clearly don’t possess.”
He walked down into the crater, his feet touching the boiling water without reaction. The heat that would have scalded normal flesh didn’t even register to his transformed body.
“You’re not a goddess. You’re a parasite who consumed her own child to steal power she couldn’t earn.
And the truly pathetic part?
Even after all that theft, after all that betrayal and sacrifice and ruthless ambition—”
He reached down and grabbed her by her hair, yanking her head up so she had to look at him.
“—you’re still weaker than what you tried to destroy. I am everything you wanted to be, and I achieved it without sacrificing my humanity. Without becoming a monster. Without betraying everyone who ever trusted me.”
“I… I did what… was necessary,” Suyajna gasped, her voice weak now, her daemon regeneration struggling to keep pace with the damage.
“Necessary,” Jaenor repeated, and his laugh was bitter.
“You keep using that word. Necessary. As if cruelty becomes virtue when you claim it serves a greater purpose. As if betrayal is justified when you dress it up in ideology.”
He yanked her head back further, forcing her to meet his eyes.
“Let me tell you about necessity. Magdalyna sacrificing herself, that was necessary. She saw no other way to save me, and she gave everything, knowing she’d die, because she actually loved me. Ba’narussa joining that sacrifice is necessary because a divine beast protects its master even unto death. That’s what real necessity looks like. Selflessness. Actual sacrifice, not demanding someone else pay the price for your ambitions.”
He released her hair, and she collapsed back into the water.
“You? You’re just selfish. Cruel. Using pretty words to justify atrocities because you couldn’t be bothered to earn power through legitimate means. And now—”
He placed his foot on her chest, pressing down with gradually increasing pressure.
“—now you’re going to experience consequences. Real consequences for what you’ve done. Not just to me, but to everyone you’ve hurt. Everyone you’ve used. Everyone whose life you’ve destroyed in pursuit of your grand vision.”
Suyajna tried to speak, to mount some defense or counterargument. But the pressure on her chest was too great, preventing breath and making speech impossible.
And as she struggled beneath his foot, as she experienced helplessness for the first time since her consumption of Jaenor had granted her ascension, a terrible realization crept over her.
She’d lost.
Completely.
