Chapter 232: Battle against the Queen Goddess
“I’m saying it was inevitable,” Kailthrys corrected.
“Power like yours attracts response. Always has, always will. The only question is whether that response is cooperation or elimination. And given your demonstrated capabilities, given what you represent as a force outside our hierarchy…”
Her eyes blazed brighter.
“I’ve decided elimination is the appropriate course.”
The battlefield went silent.
Even Suyajna, still broken in her crater, stopped trying to heal and simply watched with horrified fascination.
The Sovereign Queen had just declared her intention to kill Jaenor Arkwright.
“You think you can,” Jaenor said.
Not a question.
An observation.
“I know I can,” Kailthrys replied.
“You’re powerful, yes. More powerful than you should be. More powerful than anything I’ve encountered in centuries. But I am the Sovereign Queen of the Ascendants. I govern authority itself. I’ve existed since before your realm had continents, since before mortals discovered fire. I have ended threats that could unmake galaxies.”
She began to rise, floating upward without visible effort, her form radiating golden light that made the sun seem dim by comparison.
“So yes, child. I can end you. And I will, because that’s what cosmic order requires.
Just necessary culling of an anomaly that’s grown too dangerous to ignore.”
Jaenor watched her rise, watched the power gathering around her, and something in his expression shifted. Not fear or even concern. Something closer to resignation mixed with grim determination.
“Then I guess we’re doing this,” he said quietly.
He rose to meet her, slowly ascending into the air. No technique, no visible force propelling him. He simply chose to rise, and gravity accommodated his choice.
They climbed higher, leaving the battlefield below, putting distance between themselves and everyone else.
A thousand feet.
Two thousand.
Five thousand.
At that altitude, where the air was thin and cold, where even enhanced beings would struggle to function, they stopped.
Facing each other across perhaps fifty feet of empty space.
The Sovereign Queen and the transformed mortal.
Authority versus transcendence.
Order versus chaos.
Kailthrys moved first.
The sky responded to her will. Clouds that had been scattered and peaceful suddenly condensed, darkening, swirling into patterns that defied natural meteorology. Thunder rolled across the heavens, not from any single point but from everywhere simultaneously, as if the atmosphere itself was voicing displeasure.
Lightning descended.
Not one bolt but hundreds, thousands, all converging on Jaenor’s position. Each strike carried enough power to vaporize mountains, to boil oceans, to end gods. They came from above, from the sides, and even from below as she manipulated the electrical potential of the entire region to focus on a single point.
Jaenor’s body blazed with golden light as the lightning struck.
But he didn’t block it. Didn’t deflect or absorb it in conventional ways.
He laughed.
The sound carried across the sky, joyous and unrestrained, as electricity poured through him. His body conducted the power, channeled it, and transformed it into something else. The lightning that should have killed him became fuel, became energy that his Chaos Origin nature metabolized as easily as breathing.
“That tickles!” he called out, grinning with genuine amusement.
Kailthrys’s expression darkened.
She gestured, and the wind obeyed.
Gale-force currents erupted from all directions, converging on Jaenor with enough force to shred steel. The wind didn’t just push; it cut, compressed, and created pressure differentials that should have crushed anything caught in their center.
Jaenor spun.
His body moved with the wind, becoming part of it, dancing through the currents with smooth grace that made the assault look controlled rather than hostile. He twisted and turned, his movements creating counter-currents that disrupted Kailthrys’s control, and when he emerged from the windstorm, he was laughing again.
“You’ll have to do better than that!” he shouted, his voice carrying clearly despite the howling winds.
The Sovereign Queen’s eyes narrowed.
She raised both hands, and water answered her call.
Moisture condensed from the air, pulled from clouds, and drawn from distant oceans through connections that transcended normal space. They formed into massive spheres, each one containing enough water to flood cities, and they hurtled toward Jaenor with speeds that made them look solid.
Impact should have crushed him, drowned him, and ended him through sheer hydraulic force.
But Jaenor stretched.
His body elongated impossibly, becoming almost exaggerated as he bent and twisted to avoid the water spheres. His limbs stretched like they’re losing limits, his torso compressed and expanded, and his entire form demonstrated flexibility.
He drifted between the water spheres like they were stepping stones, using their momentum to propel himself forward, and when he reached Kailthrys’s position, he snapped back to normal proportions and threw a punch.
His fist connected with her barrier, not the punch itself being powerful enough to break through, but the impact created ripples that spread across her defenses.
Kailthrys retaliated instantly.
She manifested spears of pure golden energy, dozens of them, each one a concentrated expression of sovereign authority, and launched them at point-blank range.
Jaenor took a sharp breath inwards, and he exhaled.
The breath that emerged was force made visible. It struck the energy spears and scattered them, pushing back against Kailthrys herself and sending her flying backward despite her divine nature.
She arrested her momentum after perhaps two hundred feet, her expression showing the first hints of genuine surprise.
“What are you?” she demanded.
“Free,” Jaenor said simply.
He launched himself forward; his arm moved like a spear thrust. His fist aimed for her face with speed that even divine perception struggled to track.
Kailthrys summoned wind to deflect him, massive currents that should have blown him off course.
But Jaenor grabbed the wind itself. His hand closed around air that had become almost solid under her control, and he yanked on it, using her own technique as a rope to pull himself faster toward her.
She barely dodged, his fist missing her face by inches, the shockwave from the near-miss creating sonic booms that echoed across the sky.
“Impossible,” Kailthrys breathed.
“You’re using my own power against me. Adapting to everything I manifest. That shouldn’t be possible for someone who’s existed for less than a day in this form.”
“Chaos Origin,” Jaenor explained, his grin never fading.
“It’s the source of everything. Your lightning, your wind, your water, even your authority. They all derive from primordial chaos. And I am that chaos made manifest. So yeah, I can use your power. Can adapt to anything you throw at me. Because fundamentally, it’s all the same stuff, just shaped differently.”
Kailthrys’s expression hardened.
She raised her hands high, and nature itself responded.
The sun dimmed as she pulled its heat toward her. The sky darkened further as she commanded clouds to block all light. Temperature plummeted as she drew warmth from the atmosphere, creating conditions that should have frozen Jaenor solid.
Ice formed around him, massive crystalline structures that emerged from condensed moisture, encasing him in a prison that was simultaneously freezing him and crushing him under tons of frozen water.
For a moment, he was completely encased.
Immobile and trapped.
Then his body heated.
Not from external fire, but from within. His Chaos Origin nature generated warmth that melted the ice from the inside out, and steam exploded outward as the prison vaporized.
Jaenor emerged from the steam cloud, his body glowing red-hot, and he grinned wider.
“Cold doesn’t work either. Want to try fire next? Maybe throw a mountain at me?
Oh, I know! You could try being really stern and disappointed. That might hurt my feelings.”
His mocking tone clearly irritated the Sovereign Queen.
She gestured sharply, and the ocean miles below responded.
Water rose in massive columns, defying gravity, climbing toward their aerial battlefield. Each column was miles wide, containing enough liquid to drown entire nations, and they moved with impossible speed.
The columns converged on Jaenor from all directions, creating a sphere of crushing water pressure that should have pulverized anything caught inside.
Jaenor took a deep breath and blew again.
But this time, what emerged wasn’t just air.
It was an expansion. His breath carried force that pushed outward in all directions, creating a bubble of pressure that held back the water and that carved out space in the crushing depths.
And then he spun.
His body became a drill, rotating at speeds that turned him into a blur, and he carved upward through the water prison. The rotation generated its own force and its own momentum, and he emerged from the top of the sphere like a cork popping from a bottle.
“That was refreshing!” he called out, shaking water from his hair like a dog.
“Thanks for the bath! I was getting kind of grimy from all the fighting.”
Kailthrys’s patience was clearly wearing thin. She manifested her full presence now, dropping all restraint, all subtlety.
Golden light erupted from her in waves. The sky itself seemed to bow in her presence. Winds howled, lightning crashed, water swirled in massive vortexes, and the very air vibrated with her authority.
