The mountain cold air bit at my face as I stepped from Valara’s lodge into the pre-dawn darkness, my breath forming small clouds in the crisp air.

The peaks of the Silvermount Range loomed like sleeping giants around our village, their snow-capped summits catching the first pale hints of sunrise.

Taeryn stood with his shoulders hunched, looking thoroughly miserable as his mother Natina, gave him what appeared to be a thorough tongue-lashing. Her voice carried the sharp edge that mothers seemed to perfect when their children had disappointed them.
