Chapter 157: Chapter 157: Tests 2 – Energy Control and ELEMENTAL MANIPULATION
Flight. The holy grail of superhuman abilities. The thing every kid dreamed about.
Orion focused on his own body’s electromagnetic field—his nervous system generated electrical impulses constantly, his muscles generated bioelectric potential, his brain was essentially an electrical organ, which meant he had an EM field, and if he could manipulate external fields he should be able to manipulate his own.
He focused on Earth’s magnetic field, the constant gentle pull toward north that he’d been feeling since enhancement, and tried to create repulsion against it, to push away from the magnetic field lines instead of being pulled along them.
And he lifted.
Just a few centimeters at first, his feet leaving the floor with a sensation that was equal parts exhilarating and terrifying, hovering unstably like a spinning top on the verge of falling—
“It’s working!” he shouted with undisguised joy, rising higher, ten centimeters off the ground now, twenty, half a meter, “I can actually fly!”
He experimented eagerly, like a child with a new toy: moving forward by pushing against the magnetic field at an angle; moving backward by reversing the push; rising higher by increasing repulsion; descending by reducing it; and when he tried to spin he discovered he could rotate freely in three dimensions, creating a complete sphere of movement that was unlike anything he’d ever experienced.
But it was hard, requiring constant concentration, constant adjustment, constant focus to maintain stability—the slightest lapse and he’d drop, the slightest overcorrection and he’d shoot off in random directions, and when he tried to move faster than a walking pace his control deteriorated immediately, sending him tumbling through the air like a poorly thrown football.
“This needs extensive practice,” he said, landing carefully, the sense of achievement dampened by awareness of how unstable his flight was, “but it’s possible—I can achieve flight through electromagnetic manipulation, and once I master it I’ll have true three-dimensional movement capability.”
But his mind was already racing ahead to other applications. “What about telekinesis?” he asked, excitement building, “if I can manipulate EM fields and lift myself, what about heavy objects?”
Rene brought out a 50-ton weight, the same massive block of compressed material he’d lifted manually earlier, and set it in the middle of the floor with a thud that cracked tiles.
Orion extended his psychic sense around the weight, wrapping it in his awareness like invisible hands gripping from all sides, and focused on lifting, on moving the massive object through sheer force of will and electromagnetic manipulation.
The 50-ton block rose smoothly into the air, hovering, Orion’s telekinesis holding it effortlessly in a way that made manual lifting seem primitive by comparison.
“This is easy,” he said with wonder coloring his words, “much
easier than I expected—telekinesis feels natural, feels like extending my hands but without the physical limitations.”
He experimented further, curiosity overriding caution: accelerating the weight, pushing it faster, faster, using telekinesis to overcome the mass’s inertia and force it to move at speeds that physics said should be impossible for something so heavy.
The sensors measured velocity as it climbed: 100 meters per second, 200, 300, 340—
BOOM
The weight broke the sound barrier, creating a sonic boom in the underground laboratory that rattled equipment and made the walls shake, and Orion stared at the supersonic 50-ton projectile he’d created with something approaching horror.
“A fifty-ton weight accelerated to Mach 1,” he said quietly, really understanding the implications for the first time, “that’s not just a weapon, that’s a apocalypse-level weapon—nothing could survive impact from that, it would hit with the force of a small nuclear weapon, and I did it with thought, just by wanting the weight to move faster.”
He set the weight down with exaggerated gentleness, suddenly very aware that he was now capable of casual city-destroying violence if he wasn’t careful.
“Telekinesis might be my most dangerous ability,” he admitted with a mixture of pride and fear, “more dangerous than strength because I don’t need to touch things to destroy them, more dangerous than speed because I can throw objects faster than I can run, more dangerous than any other enhancement because it’s invisible—people wouldn’t even see the attack coming before a supersonic weight obliterated them.”
Earth’s Rotation:
“Can you feel Earth’s rotation beneath your feet?” Rene asked, bringing him back from contemplating apocalyptic destruction.
“Yes,” Orion confirmed, refocusing on the sensation, “constantly—Earth spins at about 1,670 kilometers per hour at the equator, and I can feel the motion, feel the angular momentum, feel the centrifugal force trying to throw me off the surface though gravity holds me down—it’s subtle but always present, like standing on a massive slowly-spinning platform, and now that I’m aware of it I can’t un-aware of it, it’s just constant background sensation.”
ENERGY CONTROL
Orion focused inward on the Radiant Core spinning steadily in his abdomen, a sphere of condensed exotic energy rotating like a miniature sun, processing power constantly, and he tried to direct some of that energy to his right hand with conscious intent.
He visualized the flow: energy from the Core, up through his torso, down his arm, into his hand, controlled and measured and precise—
His entire arm glowed golden from shoulder to fingertips, bright enough to light the laboratory, intense enough that he had to squint against his own radiance, exotic energy radiating visibly in ways that were beautiful and terrifying simultaneously.
“Too much!” he said with frustration, cutting the energy flow, “I wanted to direct energy to my hand, just the hand, and instead my whole arm is glowing like a beacon—no control, no precision, just raw unfiltered power going wherever it wants.”
He tried to suppress the energy entirely, to pull it back into the Core and lock it down—
It burst out randomly: from his chest in a golden flash, from his legs creating brief glow, from his back in pulses he couldn’t predict, the energy refusing to be contained, responding to his intent but not to his control.
“No fine control,” he admitted with defeat creeping in, “energy responds to intent but not precision—I can make it go but I can’t make it go exactly where I want, can’t measure the output, can’t maintain consistent levels, it’s like trying to paint with a fire hose instead of a brush.”
ELEMENTAL MANIPULATION
The Stellar Body Refinement Method included elemental control as a fundamental capability, and his Sun, Moon, and Earth soul visualizations theoretically gave him affinities for fire and heat and light from the Sun, water and ice and tides from the Moon, earth and stone and growth from the Earth itself, plus lightning and nature energies and electromagnetic fields from the combination.
Orion decided to test fire creation because fire was primal, was simple, was something humans had been manipulating for hundreds of thousands of years—if he couldn’t manage fire then what hope did he have for more complex elements?
He closed his eyes and concentrated, extending his right hand palm-up, visualizing a small flame floating above his palm, and he tried to send a tiny amount of exotic energy to his hand, then transform that energy’s properties to match fire through conscious manipulation.
He thought about fire scientifically to guide the transformation: rapid oxidation releasing heat and light, molecules moving so fast they broke chemical bonds, temperatures hot enough to cause combustion, the specific frequency of electromagnetic radiation that human eyes perceived as orange-yellow-red flames.
The properties of fire filled his mind with encyclopedic completeness thanks to his enhanced intelligence: ignition temperature, heat of combustion, flame color corresponding to temperature, oxidation reactions, free radical chemistry, all of it crystallizing into complete understanding.
He opened his eyes—
WHOOOOSH
A massive raging inferno appeared above his palm, not the small candle-flame he’d intended but a blazing column of fire three meters tall and two meters wide, heat radiating with enough intensity that he felt it even through his enhanced durability, flames roaring like a furnace, temperature spiking to what had to be thousands of degrees based on the blue-white color at the core.
“Too much!” Orion shouted in panic, his voice barely audible over the roar of the flames, and he frantically tried to cut the energy flow, to shut down the fire before it spread, before it damaged equipment, before it turned the laboratory into an inferno.
The fire vanished instantly when he cut the energy, disappearing like someone had flipped a switch, leaving nothing but heat-shimmer in the air and the smell of ozone and scorched air, and Orion stood there breathing hard with his heart hammering, staring at his palm which was completely unburned because his own fire apparently couldn’t hurt him.
He was simultaneously amazed and terrified—amazed that he could create fire from nothing through pure energy manipulation, terrified that he had zero control over the scale, that asking for a small flame had produced an inferno hot enough to melt steel.
“Elemental manipulation works,” he said when he’d caught his breath, trying to sound analytical rather than scared, “but I have zero control—asked for small flame, got massive inferno, and if I’d let that run for even a few more seconds it would have damaged equipment, maybe compromised structural integrity, possibly killed someone if they’d been nearby.”
He tried something that should be simpler: dimming the laboratory lights, just reducing electrical flow slightly to prove he could manage something without causing destruction.
Focused on the nearest light fixture, reached out with his electromagnetic manipulation, tried to reduce the energy flowing to it—
POP-FLASH-TINKLE
The light exploded spectacularly, glass shattering outward, electrical short creating a brief flash of blue-white light, and Orion flinched away from the debris shower with embarrassment flooding through him.
“Energy overload,” Rene observed clinically, apparently unsurprised by the destruction, “you added energy to the circuit instead of reducing it, opposite of your intended effect, which suggests your control mechanisms are not just imprecise but potentially inverted under certain circumstances.”
“The problem,” Orion concluded with frustration that was rapidly approaching despair, “is I understand the theory perfectly—my enhanced intelligence gives me complete knowledge of fire chemistry, electromagnetic principles, energy manipulation physics—but I have no precision, no fine control, no ability to scale effects appropriately, and everything I try produces either too much or completely wrong results.”
CONCLUSION – 11:30 PM
Orion sat down heavily in the middle of the laboratory floor, exhaustion from constant testing and constant failure making him careless about the sitting-too-hard problem—
CRACK-BOOM-SHATTER
And floor tiles exploded beneath him like he’d dropped an anvil, ceramic and concrete fragmenting into pieces that scattered across the floor, creating a crater that was embarrassingly large for something as simple as sitting down.
He didn’t even have the energy to be embarrassed anymore, just sat there in his self-created crater surrounded by broken tiles and failed tests and overwhelming evidence of his complete lack of control.
“I’m powerful but useless,” he said quietly, the words tasting like ashes in his mouth, defeat coloring every syllable despite his best effort to stay positive, “I can’t control any of this—every action I take causes destruction, every sense is overwhelmed with input I can’t filter, every movement is wrong in ways I can’t predict, and if I went outside right now I’d be a danger to everyone around me because I can’t even sit down without breaking things.”
His voice dropped even lower, almost a whisper. “Can’t walk without destroying walls, can’t speak without shouting, can’t touch anything without crushing it, can’t use my abilities without causing chaos, and the worst part is I know I have the power, I can feel it, but it’s like trying to do surgery with a sledgehammer—the tool is too crude for the task, and I’m the tool.”
