Chapter 21: Chapter 21: The Spars Begin
Week 2 – Day 13 After Transformation
“No more cultivation today!” Celestia announced as she burst into the Cross family’s backyard, her wooden training spear bouncing on her shoulder. “Mama says I need to take a break or my foundation might become unstable. Something about ’too much too fast.’”
Runar looked up from where he’d been sitting in meditation, secretly working on Intent refinement in his consciousness while appearing to simply rest. “That’s probably smart. Even perfect cultivation needs consolidation time.”
“So instead—” Celestia spun her spear with practiced ease, “—let’s have a practice battle! I’ll teach you proper combat techniques!”
Runar blinked. “Combat? With real weapons?”
“Wooden weapons,” Celestia corrected, grinning. “They’re not sharp or anything. It’s perfectly safe! And you need to learn how to fight, right? You’re so strong now, but I bet you don’t even know basic combat forms!”
She wasn’t wrong. Despite his overwhelming cultivation base and theoretical knowledge of countless techniques, Runar had never actually engaged in physical combat. His martial skills existed only as comprehended concepts, never tested in practice.
This could be interesting, he thought. And it’s a good excuse to test the effect of my Void Severance Katana Soul.
“Alright,” Runar agreed, standing and moving toward the weapon rack. “But go easy on me. I really don’t know what I’m doing.”
Celestia’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “Don’t worry! Big sister will teach you everything!”
The Training Ground – Parents Watching
Jake, Lirien, and Seraphina had gathered on the back porch, initially just to supervise. They’d set up comfortable chairs and even brought tea, expecting to watch the children play at combat for a few minutes before getting bored.
“This should be cute,” Lirien said, smiling as she watched Runar examine the wooden training weapons with obvious uncertainty.
“Celestia’s been learning spear forms at her academy,” Seraphina added proudly. “She’s actually quite good for her age. Won first place in her class last month.”
Jake nodded, sipping his tea. “It’s good for them to learn combat fundamentals early. Builds discipline and body control.”
They watched as Runar picked up a wooden katana, turning it over in his hands like he’d never held a blade before.
“He looks so confused,” Lirien laughed softly. “Our son really is more of a scholar than a warrior.”
If only they knew.
The First Exchange
Celestia stood at one end of the training ground, spear held in perfect ready stance. Despite being only five years old, her posture was textbook—weight balanced, weapon angled defensively, eyes focused on the target, body ready to react instinctively.
“Okay, Runar! Watch carefully!” She began moving through a basic spear form, her movements fluid and precise. “See? You step forward like this, thrust, pivot, withdraw. The spear is all about reach and control. You keep your enemy at distance and strike when they can’t reach you.”
The form was genuinely impressive. Peak Earth-grade spear technique, Runar’s analytical mind categorized automatically. Excellent foundation for her age.
“Now you try something with your katana!” Celestia called out, resetting to her ready stance. “Don’t worry if it’s messy! Everyone starts somewhere!”
Runar gripped the wooden katana in both hands, adopting what he hoped looked like a clumsy beginner’s stance.
The moment his fingers fully wrapped around the handle, everything changed.
His Void Severance Katana Soul—dormant until now, waiting for him to reach Planetary Core realm for full awakening—stirred.
A pulse of recognition rippled through his spiritual sea. The wooden blade in his hands suddenly felt right. Not like a training weapon, but like an extension of his very being.
Knowledge flooded his consciousness. Not learned, but remembered. Sword forms he’d never practiced. Cutting techniques that had never been taught to him. Movement patterns that existed in the space between instinct and perfection.
His forty mastered Intents hummed in resonance. Sword Intent, Space Intent, Time Intent, and dozens more, all aligning with the blade. His ten comprehended Laws—Sword Law at 28% especially—synchronized with his grip.
For a fraction of a second, the wooden katana in Runar’s hands wasn’t a training weapon anymore. It was a manifestation of the Void itself, ready to sever reality at his command.
Then he suppressed everything.
99.9% of his power, locked away. All his Intents, muted. His Laws, barely whispers. The martial techniques mastered to Limit Break realm, sealed.
What remained was approximately one level above Celestia’s current skill—enough to challenge her, but not enough to seem impossible.
“Okay,” Runar said, his voice uncertain despite the perfect combat stance his body had unconsciously adopted. “I’ll… try?”
Celestia nodded encouragingly. “Come at me! Don’t hold back!”
If only she knew what ’not holding back’ would actually look like.
Runar moved.
The Battle
His first step was deceptively simple—a basic forward advance, katana held in middle guard position. To the watching parents, it looked clumsy. To Celestia, it looked exploitable.
She thrust forward with her spear, aiming for center mass—a textbook opening attack meant to test distance and reaction time.
Runar’s blade moved.
Tink.
The wooden weapons met, and Celestia’s eyes widened in surprise. Her thrust—strong enough to knock back most children her age—had been deflected smoothly, almost casually. And Runar’s positioning after the deflection was… perfect. His weight balanced, his blade already angling for a counter.
“Not bad!” Celestia grinned, pulling back and resetting. “Beginner’s luck, probably. Try again!”
She attacked more seriously this time—a combination she’d learned from her academy instructor. High thrust, withdraw, low sweep, pivot, middle thrust. Five movements in rapid succession, testing multiple angles.
Runar’s response was instinctive.
His footwork shifted—not stepping, but flowing. His body seemed to already know where Celestia’s spear would be before she moved it. The katana intercepted each attack with minimal motion, economy of movement that spoke of perfect efficiency.
Deflect high. Sidestep low. Pivot inside her reach. Counter-thrust to her exposed side—
He stopped the counter mere inches from Celestia’s ribs.
“Point,” Celestia admitted, jumping back and reassessing. “Okay, you’re definitely not a beginner. Were you pretending?”
“I just… know where to move?” Runar offered weakly. “Like, I can see where your spear is going to be, so I move my sword there first?”
Which was technically true. His transcendent consciousness, enhanced by HDCM and operating at thousands of times normal human speed, could predict her movements with absurd accuracy. Combined with his Intent and Law comprehension, fighting Celestia while this heavily suppressed was like a grandmaster playing chess against a talented show. She doesn’t know the peak of Mount Tai. A frog at the bottom of the lake.
But he couldn’t let that show.
“That’s actually really advanced!” Celestia said, her competitive spirit igniting. “But let’s see you handle THIS!”
She launched into a more complex assault.
Her spear became a blur of motion—thrusts, sweeps, spins, feints. She incorporated her ice-water qi, frost trailing behind her weapon, water droplets spiraling around the spear’s path. Her now Stage 18 cultivation provided speed and power that would overwhelm most Meteor Forging cultivators.
The wooden spear cracked the ground with each strike, leaving small craters where it impacted. The air whooshed with each swing, displaced by sheer velocity.
Runar met her assault with measured responses.
His footwork was a study in efficiency—never a wasted step, always positioned perfectly to defend or counter. The katana moved in tight, controlled arcs, intercepting her spear at angles that redirected force rather than meeting it head-on.
Deflect. Pivot. Slide inside her guard. Withdraw before she can counter. Circle left—she’s stronger on her right side. Exploit the quarter-second opening after her spinning strike—
He wasn’t fighting with his full capabilities. Not even close. But within the narrow parameters he’d set for himself—staying exactly one level above Celestia’s skill—the battle was fascinating.
She learned frighteningly fast.
Every time Runar exploited a weakness in her guard, she adapted. Every successful deflection taught her something about angles and force distribution. Her movements became more refined with each exchange, her spear work evolving in real-time.
She really is a genuine genius, Runar thought as he barely dodged a particularly clever feint. No wasted motion. Never makes the same mistake twice. She’s already better than she was thirty seconds ago.
Their weapons clashed again and again and again.
CRACK. Celestia’s spear struck the ground, creating a crater two feet wide.
WHOOSH. Runar’s counter cut through the air, stopping just short of her shoulder.
“Got you!” Celestia crowed, but Runar’s blade was already repositioning, having turned her “victory” into a trap.
“Counter-counter,” Runar said apologetically, his katana resting gently against her neck.
“Argh!” Celestia jumped back, frustrated but grinning. “Okay, you’re way better than you pretended to be! But I’m learning! Watch this!”
She implemented a completely new pattern—something she’d apparently just invented, combining elements of what Runar had shown her with her own ice-water techniques. Frost spread across the ground from her feet, water droplets forming a defensive spiral, her spear moving in ways that incorporated both her physical reach and her qi manipulation.
Brilliant, Runar acknowledged, genuinely impressed. She just created her own technique. In the middle of combat. At five years old.
He matched her innovation with his own adjustments, carefully calibrating his responses to remain exactly one level higher than her rapidly evolving skill.
The battle continued.
