Chapter 65: Aden! Please Come Back!
The Entity stood rooted, his breath coming in jagged, silver plumes.
“Your mind shall become my playground.”
The loop snapped back for the fifth time. The tenth. He had lost count. Each time he crushed her skull, he would somehow blink and the world would reset, leaving him standing in the center of the cave with his fist clenched around nothing but air.
“You… Just how long do you imagine this trick of yours would last?” The Entity threatened, but his voice lacked that sharp edge it usually carried.
Lorelei didn’t respond. Or it would be more accurate to say she couldn’t.
Because she was forcefully holding back the mouthful of blood that threatened to splash from her mouth if she did.
’How is he adapting so fast? He should have lost his mind by now,’ Lorelei questioned with burdening confusion.
Despite her outward appearance, the amount of energy it took to manipulate the mind to such lengths was astronomical.
The truth of the matter was Aden, or whoever took over him had never moved from his spot ever since she had started her mind manipulation technique.
All she had to do know was just watch Aden’s varying expressions and listen to a few arrogant words after his perceived ’return’ to the past.
Each loop took a terrifying amount of Resonance energy from her pool and the only glimmer of hope that he’d fall into insanity due to the perceived repetitions was shattered by his very existence.
’I only have two more loops left. If he doesn’t succumb and Aden doesn’t manage to fight whatever this is, I will die.’
Her jaw clenched so hard that her premolar cracked under the pressure. A drop of crimson trailed down the corner of her cheek, her knees were shaking ever so slightly and the energy that spilled from her eyes had dimmed.
But the illusion portrayed her appearance to be in perfect condition.
The Entity wiped the black goo from the corner of its lips. “You are a glorified coward, child, but you are strong.”
The Entity lunged again, but there was no violence in his steps, no anger to his attack, but the intent to kill was there and it was as plain as the morning sky.
But then he shifted. He didn’t aim for Lorelei this time, instead he dashed past her and grabbed Zero who was still laying by the rock with unnerving clarity.
Lorelei’s eyes widened as her peripheral vision caught him. “What—!”
*Crack*
The echo of his flesh grinding against his brittle bones sounded clearly in the cave, each rebound causing Lorelei’s heart to drop further down her stomach.
Zero’s eyes dimmed and his neck fell against the Entity’s arm with a loose force that only whispered the tones of death.
He turned his head towards Lorelei slowly. A small smile tugged at his lips as he tossed Zero to the side.
“Like I said. You are strong,” he appeared before her, and curled his fingers around her throat like a vice. “But I am beyond strength.”
His hands moved to end her life, but Lorelei wasn’t one to die easily. The blood she had been holding in all this while sprayed onto his face and blinded him momentarily.
Taking advantage of this window that wouldn’t last half a second, she materialized a blade that shone with a red hue similar to hers. The blade drew a clean arc against his arm, but couldn’t finish the job.
A dull vibrating sound rang in her ears as the blade got stuck less than a centimeter into his skin. A brief flash of annoyance flashed in his eyes as the metallic taste and dull pain traveled through his senses.
The blade lost its glow and fell on the floor with a clank.
“Was that your last resort?” The Entity smiled widely. “Very well then. Good—”
Suddenly the Entity’s face changed from that of pleasure to one of shock. His eyes left Lorelei’s smug face and faced downwards.
His mouth opened to say something, but no words came. The sudden comprehension that dawned on him was too heavy for his arrogance to break.
Like a flame, the strength that resided in his hands began to flicker. Almost as if it was being pulled back by someone.
And that person was extremely angry.
The Entity’s arms vibrated and let go of Lorelei’s neck. Lorelei fell to the ground with a heavy thud, but the slight pain only served to heighten her hope to greater lengths.
“You bastard,” A voice rang from the Entity’s mouth, but it didn’t carry that prideful or ancient tone, no. It was more… Human.
The Entity’s fingers clawed at his own face, his marble-white skin rippling like disturbed water. One silver eye remained wide and piercing, but the other… the other turned a dull, flat grey.
“Get… out…” Aden’s voice was a jagged rasp, tearing through the Entity’s vocal cords.
“You fool!” the Entity roared back, though the sound was strangled. “I built this body! I saved us from the Princess! Without me, you are a ghost in a gutter!”
“Shut the fuck up and get out of my body you piece of shit!!”
Aden’s body arched backwards with a booming roar that shook the cave. Each eye flickered with a struggle for dominance characterized by the constant alternation of grey and silver.
Lorelei snapped out of her shock and immediately ran towards Zero.
Zero whom she taught was dead now rested against a pillar at the far edge of the cave with pieces of rock falling upon him.
Lorelei slid to her knees before him, the increasing roars sending waves of urgency through her. “We need to save him, Zero,” she pleaded.
Although she had the title of Third Vassal, and Zero being the Fifth, she couldn’t just order him around. The last shred of consciousness and guilt she had towards the other Vassals didn’t permit her.
Zero’s eyes twisted a little as he tried to refocus on her figure. Her face was bloodied, bruises that went past physical lined her form and anyone could tell she was moving on sheer will power alone.
Slowly, his mouth opened. “Anything for our… True Lord”
