Chapter 237: Chapter-237
Mahir reached past her for the copy paper and ink already on the desk — he’d positioned them there when they arrived, without being asked, because he anticipated what she needed in working environments the way she anticipated extraction routes.
She copied. Mahir held the originals steady while she worked, one hand keeping the page flat without touching the text.
They worked in silence for twenty minutes. The archive’s preservation cold sat around them. Somewhere below, the normal business of the records office continued, clerks and officials moving through the floors with their ordinary questions and their ordinary documents, none of it touching the third floor where two people were quietly copying the architecture of a conspiracy.
When she finished, she returned each original precisely, restoring the positions with the attention she gave all things.
Stood.
“We need to talk to Caius,” she said. “And I need to know if his records clerk has anything about the seventh prince’s medical files.”
Mahir fell into step beside her. “How certain are you.”
“About which part.”
“Any of it.”
Elara thought for a moment. They were moving toward the stairs now, back through the misaligned corridors, past the preservation cold and into the slightly warmer air of the second floor.
“The shipments are documented,” she said. “The timing is documented. The amendments are documented.” She paused. “The connection between them is inference. Strong inference. But not yet proof.”
“And the addition.”
“The addition is the piece that doesn’t fit the others neatly,” she said. “The shipments and the amendments serve the same master. The addition might serve a different one entirely.” She paused. “Or it might be the reason for all of it.”
Mahir was quiet for a moment.
“If someone has a bloodline claim that was suppressed,” he said. “And someone else has been systematically manipulating bloodline records to strengthen their own position—”
“Then there are two separate actors in this,” Elara said. “And they may not know about each other.”
“Or they do know,” Mahir said. “And one of them is moving first.”
Elara looked at him.
He looked back at her.
“That,” she said, “is the more interesting possibility.”
They reached the ground floor. The archive clerk at the entrance bowed again as they passed. Elara nodded without stopping. Outside, the palace morning had fully arrived — bright, busy, the courtyard full of movement and the sounds of an empire that did not know what was sitting in the regent’s inner coat pocket.
She walked at an even pace through it all.
Mahir beside her.
The copies against her chest.
—
They were halfway across the main courtyard when she heard it.
Her name. Not *Your Highness.* Not *the Regent.* Her name, called from the upper colonnade with the specific carrying projection of someone who had trained their voice for exactly this purpose and wanted to be heard by everyone present.
“Elara.”
She stopped.
Elara turned.
She did this slowly, not from hesitation but from the particular discipline of someone who had learned that the speed of a turn communicated as much as anything said afterward. Too fast meant surprise. Too slow meant fear. Even was correct.
She turned evenly.
The Third Consort was standing at the end of the corridor.
Not the colonnade. Not above. Here, at ground level, in the corridor that connected the inner wing to the archive courtyard, which was not a corridor that people used casually. It required passing through two checkpoints and knowing the building’s layout well enough to find this specific route.
She had been waiting.
Elara registered this and registered what it meant and moved on.
The Third Consort was — she searched her accumulated information. Forty, perhaps. Difficult to place exactly, because she had the quality of someone who had learned to make age irrelevant through sheer composure. She had been the Emperor’s third formal consort, brought into the palace seventeen years ago from a northern noble house with good bloodlines and better political connections. She had produced no children. She had, in seventeen years, made no visible enemies and no visible allies and had existed in the palace the way certain kinds of weather existed — present, consistent, unobtrusive.
Elara had placed her in the category of *not an immediate concern* and had not looked further.
She was revising that now.
The Third Consort wore deep grey, which was still within mourning range but barely — the kind of shade that said *I acknowledge the occasion* without committing fully to grief. Her hair was arranged simply. No jewels except one — a single pin, pale stone, that caught the corridor light in a way that suggested it was older and more significant than its appearance admitted.
She stood with her hands folded and looked at Elara with an expression that was not the careful neutral of palace performance. It was something quieter and more direct than that.
Behind Elara, Mahir had stopped. She could feel the quality of his stillness — assessing, present, not yet committed to a response.
“Your Highness,” the Third Consort said. Her voice was low and even. “I apologise for the setting. I chose it because it is the least observed corridor in this building.” A pause. “I have been trying to find a way to speak with you privately for eleven days.”
Elara looked at her.
“You could have requested an audience,” she said.
“A formal request creates a record,” the Third Consort said. “The record would have been seen before it reached you. And then I would have found myself in a situation I am trying to avoid.” She paused. “I believe you understand how that works.”
She said it without irony. Just fact.
Elara studied her for a moment.
“Walk with me,” Elara said.
—
They walked the length of the corridor slowly, Mahir a precise distance behind — close enough for intervention, far enough to allow the conversation to exist. Elara did not tell him to drop further back. The Third Consort did not ask.
“You were in the restricted section,” the Third Consort said. Not a question.
“Yes.”
“You found the case.”
Elara glanced at her. “How do you know what’s in the restricted section.”
“Because I put it there,” the Third Consort said simply.
Elara stopped walking.
The Third Consort stopped beside her, unhurried, as if she had anticipated this moment and made her peace with it some time ago. She looked at Elara with that direct, quiet expression that had no performance in it at all.
“You filed the sealed record,” Elara said.
“Thirty years ago, I was not yet in this palace,” the Third Consort said. “But I am the one who ensured it stayed where it was. When it should have been destroyed.” She paused. “Twice.”
Elara looked at her.
Ran the information. Adjusted the framework. Ran it again.
“You’ve been protecting it,” she said.
“I’ve been protecting him,” the Third Consort said. “There is a difference.”
They stood in the corridor, the archive building quiet around them, the preservation cold working on everything in the rooms beyond.
“Tell me,” Elara said.
The Third Consort looked at the far wall for a moment. Not evasion — gathering. The way someone gathered when the thing they were about to say had been carried for a long time and needed to be set down carefully.
