She told them.

“Where did you come from,” the Seventh consort said.

“Somewhere else,” Elara said. “That’s the version I have available.”

The Seventh consort considered this for a moment with the equanimity of someone who had spent sixty-one years developing the capacity to accept unusual information without structural collapse.

“The princess who fell in the garden,” she said, “was a frightened child who saw everything clearly and never knew what to do about it.” She paused. “She would not have built this.” She gestured, briefly, at the desk, the documents, the assembled evidence of three months’ work. “She would not have been capable of this.”

“I had her notes,” Elara said. “Her diary. She saw clearly.”

“She saw clearly,” the Seventh consort agreed. “She was simply too afraid to act on it.” A pause. “You are not afraid.”

“No,” Elara said.

“Why not,” the Seventh consort said. With genuine curiosity. Not challenging — asking.

Elara thought about this for a moment.

“I don’t process fear the way other people do,” she said. “I assess risk and calculate response. The outcome is similar in behavior but it doesn’t feel like what other people describe fear as feeling like.” She paused. “I’m aware that’s unusual.”

“Useful,” the Seventh consort said. “In this palace. At this moment.” She folded her hands on her lap. “I’ve been here thirty-three years. I’ve watched seven succession events of varying sizes. I’ve watched the Empress Dowager build that network piece by piece since before your father was emperor.” She paused. “I’ve been waiting for someone to do what you’re doing for approximately twenty-five years.”
