It registers emotional states — specifically distress patterns, fear responses, the physiological markers of sustained trauma.” She paused. “It doesn’t transmit. It doesn’t report to me. It stores locally, within the collar itself, and accumulates a longitudinal record of each individual knight’s baseline over time.”

System looked at her. “Why.”

“Because I needed to know if what I was doing was working,” Elara said flatly. “Not from performance. Not from what they showed me, which is controlled, trained, exactly what they’ve been conditioned to show. The actual internal state.” She paused. “I needed to know if the fox-eared guard’s baseline fear response was decreasing. Whether Mahir’s stress markers were different at the end of my regency than at the beginning. Whether what I was doing in this palace was genuinely changing something or just changing the surface while the same damage continued underneath.”

System was very still.

“That is—” it started.

“Surveillance,” Elara said. “Yes. I know what it is.”

“I was going to say complicated,” System said.

“It’s both,” Elara said. “It is surveillance and it is also the only honest measurement I had access to. Everything else I could observe was filtered through performance. This was the one unperformable data source available.”

System looked at her for a long moment.

“Did it work,” it said.

Elara looked at her hands again.

“The fox-eared guard,” she said. “His baseline fear response dropped forty percent in the first six weeks. The flinching response to footsteps — which was a conditioned startle pattern from years of anticipating punishment for existing in the wrong space — that’s almost gone now.” She paused. “Mahir’s stress markers are different. Significantly. Not because his life is less dangerous — it’s considerably more dangerous than it was three months ago — but because the specific pattern of sustained low-grade fear that was there when I arrived has changed into something else.” Another pause. “I don’t have a clinical term for what it’s changed into. “What does it look like,” System said.

Elara was quiet for a moment.

“Purposeful,” she said. “Like someone who knows what they’re doing and has decided it’s worth doing.” She paused. “I don’t know how to measure that more precisely.”

System was quiet.

The window light shifted slightly as a cloud moved somewhere overhead, the grey becoming fractionally warmer for a moment before settling back.

“You built the monitoring system,” System said slowly, “to make sure you were actually helping them. Not just performing helping.”

“I needed the honest data,” Elara said.

“You could have just—” System stopped. Reconsidered. “No. You couldn’t have. You don’t trust performance. You never have.” It looked at her. “Not other people’s and not your own.”

Elara said nothing.

“But you still lied to them today,” System said. “About the extraction pathway. They think the secondary layer is gone.”

“The extraction pathway is gone,” Elara said. “That was real. The secondary layer I built is architecturally separate — Cullens’ calibration didn’t touch it and I didn’t tell him it existed.” She paused. “They went through the proceeding believing the full function was being removed. I let them believe that.”

“Because if they knew you were still monitoring them—”

“They wouldn’t trust it,” Elara said. “Even if I explained the purpose. Even if I showed them the data and proved it was non-extractive and locally stored and not transmitting to anyone.” She paused. “They’ve been wearing collars their entire service lives that did things to them without their knowledge. Telling them there’s a different kind of monitoring that’s actually good for them is the exact sentence every person who has ever exploited them would also say.” She looked at System directly. “I can’t ask them to trust that distinction. Not yet. Not for years probably.”

“So you made the decision for them,” System said.

“Yes,” Elara said.

“Because you decided your judgment about what’s good for them is reliable.”

“Yes,” she said. “I decided that. Knowing it’s exactly the same logic every authority figure in their lives has used to justify every harmful thing done to them.” She paused. “I decided it anyway.”

System looked at her with those enormous eyes.

“Does that bother you,” it said.

“Yes,” Elara said.

Which surprised them both slightly.

She sat with it for a moment.

“Not enough to make me remove it,” she said. “But yes. It bothers me.” She paused. “I built it to help them and I’m keeping it secret because I decided I know better than they do about what helps them and those two facts sit next to each other uncomfortably.”

System was quiet for a long time.

Long enough that the light through the window completed its shift back to flat grey and stayed there.

“The monitoring function,” it said finally. “How long were you planning to run it.”

“Until the baseline patterns stabilize at a level I consider sustainable,” Elara said. “For the fox-eared guard, I’d estimate another four months. For the general population, probably a year. For—” She paused. “For some individuals it may take longer.”

“Mahir,” System said.

“Mahir’s pattern is the most complex,” she said. “Because what I’m measuring in him isn’t just the decrease of one thing. It’s the development of something new. Something I don’t have a baseline for because I’ve never seen it before in a dataset.” She paused. “I don’t know when that stabilizes. I don’t know what the endpoint looks like.”

“You’re watching him most carefully,” System said. Not accusatory. Just noting.

“Yes,” Elara said.

“Because he matters most to the household operation,” System said.

A pause.

“That’s one reason,” Elara said.

System said nothing.

Did not press.

Simply sat on the windowsill in the grey light and looked at her with those eyes that saw everything and had apparently decided, years ago or moments ago or somewhere in between, that what they saw was worth staying for.

“You know what the system is supposed to do,” System said after a moment. “For you. Why I’m here. The original function.”

“You’ve never told me explicitly,” Elara said.

“No,” System said. “I haven’t.” A pause. “But you’ve figured out most of it.”

“You’re an observer,” Elara said. “You record. You watch the subject — me — and you track development across whatever metrics your architecture includes.” She paused. “I’ve assumed you report somewhere.”

“I do,” System said.

“And today’s conversation,” Elara said. “The monitoring function. The secondary layer. The decision to maintain it while removing the extractive one.” She paused. “That goes into your report.”

“Yes,” System said.

“And whoever receives your report will—”

“Assess it,” System said. “Along with everything else.”

Elara looked at it.

“Does it concern you,” System said, “that I’ve been reporting on you.”

She thought about this honestly.

But she still could not think that anything is wrong with her thinking.
