Chapter 282: Chapter-282
Then, after a beat, with the slight adjustment that meant he had remembered: “Lian Mei.”
“We’re in the office,” she said. “Your Highness is fine.”
Something moved at the corner of his mouth.
He came in. Set his bag down. Looked at the room again with the assessment he applied to all new spaces — exits, sight lines, structural features, the positions of everyone in it.
“The implementation,” he said. “It’s done.”
“This afternoon,” she said. “Hale finished at the seventh bell.”
He nodded.
Looked at the working list on the table.
“Twenty-seven open items,” she said.
“Twenty-six,” Mira said, without looking up. “Item twenty-three was completed today. I updated the list an hour ago.”
Elara looked at the list.
’Done,’ in Mira’s precise handwriting, beside item twenty-three.
Twenty-six open.
“Twenty-six,” Elara said.
Ken looked at the list for a long moment.
Then he sat in the chair nearest the door, which was where he always sat in rooms that had chairs near doors, and looked at Elara with the professional expression and the eyes that were doing something other than professional.
“Shen,” he said.
“He’s well,” she said. “He told them about the secondary layer himself. Today, during the implementation.”
Ken was quiet for a moment.
“How did they receive it,” he said.
“Better than expected,” she said. “Shen delivered it correctly. He knew his colleagues. He knew how to say it.”
Ken nodded.
“The baseline reduction,” he said. “Forty percent.”
“You read the relay report,” she said.
“Every weekly report,” he said. “For eleven months.”
She looked at him.
He looked back at her with the steadiness that was his particular quality — not performing it, just being it, the way some people simply were what they were without effort or announcement.
“You read every report,” she said.
“Yes,” he said.
“For eleven months.”
“Yes.”
She looked at him for a moment.
“Item fourteen,” she said. “Guard structure reform. Full review of appointment history, loyalty chains, reporting chains. You were supposed to do that a year ago.”
He looked at her.
“It’s still on the list,” she said. “Twenty-six items. Fourteen requires institutional standing. I have institutional standing as of this afternoon.” She paused. “I need someone who knows the guard structure.”
Ken looked at the list.
“That would take weeks,” he said.
“Three to four,” she agreed. “Depending on how cooperative the current appointment records are.”
“And after that,” he said. “It goes into the official record.”
“The administrative director receives the findings,” she said. “She decides the implementation.” She paused. “But the review is ours to conduct.”
Ken was quiet.
“You’re asking me to come back,” he said.
“I’m asking if you want to,” she said. “Lilian is managing the eastern operations. Liang Meridian functions without you there. The question is where your work is needed most.”
He looked at the room.
At Mira and Petra and Dimitri and Nadia. At Caius, who had been reading something in his corner and was not reading it anymore.
At the working list.
At Elara.
“The guard structure review,” he said. “That’s where you want me to start.”
“That’s where item fourteen is,” she said.
He looked at the list one more time.
“Yes,” he said.
“Yes to starting with item fourteen,” she said, “or yes you want to come back.”
“Both,” he said.
She nodded.
“Third bell tomorrow,” she said. “Administrative director’s office. I’ll add you to the meeting.”
He nodded.
And that was that. That was how it was with Ken — no performance, no extended deliberation, just the thing assessed and the decision made and the action following naturally from both.
She had missed that quality.
She had missed several things. She was being precise about this, in the way she was precise about everything now — not denying it, not overstating it, just noting it accurately.
She had missed Ken’s economy. Missed Dimitri’s ink-stained reliability. Missed the specific way Mira organized documentation that made it feel like information rather than paper. Missed Caius’s careful thinking and Petra’s three-version drafting and Nadia’s clean relay work.
She had been with all of them for a year, which was not the same as missing them.
But she had also been without the others.
And the others were still without her.
The system shifted on her shoulder.
’You’re thinking about Mahir,’ it said. Quietly. Just to her.
She didn’t respond.
’You’ve been not-thinking about him specifically since we arrived in the capital,’ the system said. ’Which is a specific kind of thinking.’
“I’m aware,” she said.
Quietly enough that nobody else heard. The office was not loud but it was not silent either — Nadia’s relay had a low operational hum, Petra’s pen moved across paper with its characteristic rhythm, Mira had just asked Dimitri something about the provincial documentation.
’He’s still in Varen,’ the system said. ’He didn’t come with Ken.’
“I know,” she said. “I didn’t ask him to.”
’Why not.’
She was quiet for a moment.
’Why not,’ the system said again. Not pressing. Just — asking. The way it asked things when it had already assessed the answer and wanted to see if she had too.
She had.
“Because,” she said, very quietly, “the guard structure review is Ken’s work. The relay network is Nadia’s. The documentation is Dimitri’s and Mira’s and Petra’s. Caius has his advisory role. Everyone who came back came back to a specific function that needed their specific capacity.”
’And Mahir,’ the system said.
“Mahir’s function,” she said, “is not a thing I know how to categorize as a working list item.”
The system was quiet.
’That’s honest,’ it said.
“Yes,” she said.
’Is that why you haven’t relayed him.’
“I relayed him,” she said. “Before we left Varen. I told him we were returning and what the plan was and the timeline.”
’You told him the operational details,’ the system said. ’You didn’t ask him to come.’
“No,” she said. “I didn’t.”
’Why.’
She looked at the rain-cleaned street through the office window. The capital evening. The city that had survived a year and was in the process of deciding what came next, the same way it always was, the way cities always were.
“Because asking him to come,” she said, very quietly, “is not an operational request. And I don’t know how to make it something other than operational.”
The system was silent for a moment.
’Do you want to,’ it said. ’Figure out how.’
She sat with this.
Honestly.
With the specific honesty she applied to everything now that was harder than document review and more important and had no clean methodology she could follow.
“Yes,” she said.
’That’s new,’ the system said.
“I know,” she said.
’It’s good,’ the system said. Simply. Without elaboration.
She looked at the window.
“I don’t know how to do it,” she said.
’I know,’ the system said. ’But you know how to figure out things you don’t know how to do.’
“That’s different,” she said.
’Is it,’ the system said.
She thought about it.
The working list. The way it had started as fourteen items and had become thirty-nine and would become more, because lists didn’t get shorter and that was fine. The way she had learned to hold uncomfortable things without letting the discomfort stop the work. The way she had built something from nothing across two lifetimes and a year in the eastern provinces and two days back in a city she had left through a passage in the dark.
