At the corrupted forest’s edge, the air was cold and heavy. This was completely unlike the warm, vibrant life just a few feet back.
The team stood in a silent line, staring into the tangled grey thorns. The governor and a small, nervous honor guard of militiamen stood a respectful distance away, watching with undisguised awe.
“The samples are one thing,” Jonah said, breaking the silence. “But we need to see how the blight reacts to a direct purification. We need a baseline.”
Master Fen nodded, his eyes gleaming with curiosity. “An excellent proposal! We must test the subject’s resistance to the catalyst. Observe the rate of cellular regeneration, or in this case, de-generation!”
Lira just watched, her expression pained. To her, this wasn’t an experiment; it was an attempt to soothe a wounded animal.
“Everyone, stand back,” Jonah instructed. He took a deep breath, centering himself. This was it. The first real test of his new purpose. He closed his eyes and reached into his Beast Space, calling forth the promise he had made.
A soft light bloomed in the oppressive gloom.
Sylva appeared in a shimmer of life. Its body seemed to radiate warmth, and the blossoms on its antlers pulsed with a gentle energy. The moment its crystalline hooves touched the ground, the very air around it felt cleaner. The sickly sweet smell of decay recoiled as if from a cleansing fire.
A collective gasp went through the governor’s men. Lira let out a soft sigh, a weight lifting from her shoulders. “The scream…” she whispered. “It’s quieter now.”
Sylva took a step forward, onto the blighted, thorny ground. Unlike at the Withered Scar, where a single blade of grass had instantly appeared, nothing happened. The black soil remained black.
For a heartbeat, Jonah felt a hint of doubt. Was this corruption too different? Too strong?
He gave Sylva a gentle mental nudge. Show them.
The Verdant Guardian lowered its head, and its Land’s Purification aura activated. A wave of visible, golden-green light emanated from its body, spreading outwards in a deliberate circle.
The effect was not instant, but it was undeniable.
The twisted, grey vines at the edge of the aura’s influence began to tremble. Slowly, they started to recede, pulling back from the light like slugs from salt. The thorny ground beneath Sylva’s hooves began to soften, the black soil lightening to a dark, healthy brown.
Tiny shoots of vibrant green grass, impossibly bright against the decay, began to push their way through the dirt.
It was a slow, silent battle. The light pushed, and the darkness yielded, inch by painful inch. Over the course of ten minutes, Sylva had managed to cleanse a small circle of land about fifteen feet across. It was a tiny island of life in an ocean of corruption.
“It works,” Vanessa breathed, her eyes wide with wonder as she monitored the energy readings on her scanner. “The corrupting mana is being neutralized and dispersed. It’s working!”
Jonah felt a surge of pride and relief. It was a start. He gave Sylva the command to stop. “That’s enough for now.”
The golden-green light faded, and Sylva stepped back onto the healthy side of the forest,. The small patch of reclaimed land stood as a testament to their success.
But their victory was short-lived.
They watched as a thin, thorny vine slowly came out of the blighted wall. It moved slowly, carefully, testing the air. Another one came too. They crawled over the ground, touching the clean soil.
The fresh green grass began to wither the moment the thorns touched it. The rich, brown earth slowly darkened, turning back to a lifeless black.
Within the hour, the small island of life was gone. Swallowed. It was as if it had never been there at all.
The hopeful expressions on the faces of the militia vanished, replaced by a familiar despair. Master Fen, however, was scribbling furiously in a notebook.
“Remarkable!” he muttered. “It’s not just a curse; it’s an organism. It has a defense mechanism. A propagation instinct. It actively reclaims lost territory!”
The team regrouped, the mood now sad and serious. The problem was far bigger than they had imagined.
“The Withered Scar was a wound,” Jonah said, thinking aloud. “It was a dead thing, a static pool of demonic energy. We removed the source, and the land could finally heal.”
“This is not a wound,” Lira added, her voice heavy with understanding. “This is a sickness. A living plague. It grows, it spreads, and it fights back. Healing a small part of it is like trying to cure a fever by cooling a single finger. The infection remains.”
Vanessa nodded in agreement, looking at her scanner. “The energy signature is self-sustaining. As long as the primary source of the blight exists, it will continue to produce this corrupting mana. It will always spread back.”
Jonah looked at the wall of thorns, at the empty diseased forest stretching out for miles. He finally understood the true scale of their task. Cleansing the land wasn’t enough. Sylva could heal the symptoms, but it couldn’t cure the disease.
“This blight has a source,” Jonah said. His voice showed new, strong belief. “Like a hive has a queen, or a disease has a point of origin. There’s a heart to this corruption somewhere, a central intelligence pumping this poison into the land.”
He turned to his team, his gaze sweeping over each of them. Their easy confidence was gone, replaced by the grim focus of professionals facing an impossible puzzle.
“We can’t win by just healing the edges,” he concluded. “We have to find the heart of this thing and neutralize it. And to do that, we need to know exactly what it is we’re fighting.”
He looked back towards the town, towards their lab. His eyes met Vanessa’s, then Master Fen’s.
“It’s time to see what your samples can tell us. We need to dissect this plague, piece by piece, and find out what makes it tick.”
