The silence inside Station Chimera was worse than any scream. it felt like it stuck to the walls, squeezing the narrow halls tight. The only sounds were the soft shuffles of their own footsteps and the faint, unsettling drip of water from an unseen pipe.
Vanessa summoned a soft, glowing orb that hovered above them, holding back the choking dark. With the emergency lights dead, the station felt like a maze of shadows waiting to swallow them up. Jonah, with Shard’s sonar map in his head, took the lead, guiding them through the lifeless facility.
It didn’t take them long to find out why it was so quiet.
Around the first corner, they found him. A researcher in a white lab coat, sprawled on the floor. Eliza, the medic, rushed forward, but Seraph stopped her with a firm hand on her shoulder.
“Don’t touch him,” she said, her voice grim.
The man wasn’t just dead. His body was strangely… deflated. His skin was gray and waxy, and there were strange, melted patches on his lab coat, as if he’d been splashed with a powerful chemical. There were no claw marks, no bite wounds. It was an unnerving, alien sight.
“What could do that?” Vanessa whispered, her face pale.
“I don’t know,” Seraph admitted. “And that’s what worries me.”
They continued on, their weapons drawn and their senses on high alert. The whole station felt like a tomb. They kept finding more bodies, each one twisted and horrible. Overturned tables, smashed equipment, and desperate, bloody handprints on the walls told the story of a swift and terrifying slaughter.
As they approached the West Wing – where Jonah had detected the active secondary power source – a strange sound echoed from the corridor ahead.
Jonah held up a fist, signaling a halt. “Something’s coming,” he whispered. “One of the smaller signatures. It’s fast.”
The team flattened themselves against the walls, weapons ready. A creature darted out of the darkness and into the dim glow of Vanessa’s light orb.
And it was wrong. All wrong.
It had the basic body shape of a large wolf, but its gray fur was patchy, revealing sections of shiny, insect-like black plating underneath. Its tail wasn’t a tail at all, but a cluster of writhing, fleshy tentacles. It snarled, its mouth dripping with a thick, greenish saliva that hissed and sizzled when it hit the floor. This wasn’t a creature born of nature. It was an abomination.
“What the hell is that?” Draven muttered, his usual swagger gone, replaced by pure disgust.
Before anyone could answer, the creature spat. A glob of the green acid shot through the air, aimed directly at Vanessa.
“Shield!” Seraph yelled.
Draven, reacting on pure instinct, leaped in front of Vanessa, his massive greatsword appearing in his hand in a flash of heat. He blocked the acid with the flat of his blade. The metal hissed and smoked, the powerful enchantment on the sword barely protecting it from melting.
The creature didn’t wait. It lunged, its movements jerky and unnatural, a horrifying scramble of wolf-like speed and a bug’s creepy scuttle.
“I’ve got it!” Draven roared, swinging his flaming sword in a blazing arc. The fire-cloaked blade slammed into the creature’s side, sending up a hiss of burning flesh and smoke.
But something strange happened. Instead of slicing through, the sword just bounced off the creature’s hard, bug-like armor with a dull thud, leaving behind nothing but a charred scorch mark. The creature stumbled but was otherwise unharmed.
“It’s armor is tougher than it looks!” Draven grunted in surprise.
“Try fire!” Seraph commanded.
Vanessa didn’t need to be told twice. She launched a bolt of pure, white-hot flame. The fireball smashed into the creature and swallowed it in flames. It let out a shriek – a mix of a wolf’s howl and creepy, insect-like chittering. The fire was working, burning through the cracks in its armor, but the thing moved so wildly that hitting it again was like trying to swat a fly in a hurricane. It dodged another fire bolt and prepared to spit again.
Jonah knew he had to act. This wasn’t a Raging Boar. It wasn’t a predictable beast. This was chaos in living form. But chaos could be controlled.
“Shard, hit it with high frequency! Nyx, confuse it!” he ordered through their link.
From its position near Jonah’s feet, Shard’s crystalline shell began to vibrate, releasing a piercing, high-frequency pulse that was inaudible to human ears. The effect on the chimera was immediate. It flinched violently, its unnatural movements becoming even more frantic as its senses were assaulted.
At the same instant, Nyx, who had been a silent shadow on the ceiling, dove down, releasing a puff of its shimmering Disorienting Dust. The confused creature was now also half-blind, swinging at sparkles that weren’t there.
This was the opening.
“Draven, take out its joints!” Jonah yelled. “Vanessa, aim for the head!”
He darted to the side, drawing the creature’s attention, forcing it to turn. It was a classic pincer move, one he’d used a hundred times in training drills.
Draven, seeing the logic in the plan, followed the command. He brought his sword down not on the tough plating, but on the creature’s exposed knee joint. The blade bit deep. At the same time, Vanessa’s next fireball hit the confused chimera right in the face.
With a final, gurgling scream, the twisted beast collapsed, its twitching tentacles slowly going still.
The team stood there, breathing heavily. The fight had lasted less than thirty seconds, but it had been tense and chaotic. Even Draven looked at Jonah with a grudging respect. “That… trick with the noise was… useful,” he admitted, almost choking on the words.
Jonah knelt beside the corpse, a strange feeling prickling at his senses. His power was reacting to the dead creature. He focused on it, trying to see if he could acquire its essence.
A sharp, painful jolt shot through his mind, and a new warning flashed, stark and severe.
`[ Chimeric Essence Detected. WARNING: Highly volatile. Genetic structure is a chaotic mix of mismatched parts. Absorption not recommended.]`
Absorption not recommended. Jonah pulled back, a cold feeling washing over him. This thing was so fundamentally wrong, his power didn’t even want to touch it.
“What did you find?” Vanessa asked, noticing his pained expression.
Before he could answer, her light orb illuminated something on a nearby desk – a datapad, its screen cracked but still glowing faintly. She picked it up. It was a damaged research log.
She read the last few entries aloud, her voice growing more horrified with each word.
“Entry 4-A. Subject Gamma’s DNA is failing to properly bond with the serpentine nerve tissue. Subject is… aggressive. Unpredictable…”
“Entry 4-B. We’ve had a major setback. Our attempts at artificial essence infusion have resulted in catastrophic psychic feedback. The subjects are not just physically unstable; they are mentally unstable. We can’t replicate the ‘natural matrix’ of a true Demonic Beast…”
Vanessa looked up from the screen, her face pale. “They weren’t just studying beasts,” she whispered. “They were trying to make them. They were trying to do what you do, Jonah.”
The truth of Station Chimera hit them all at once. They were standing in a laboratory that had tried to play god. They had tried to replicate the miracle of the Awakening, the art of a Beast Weaver, using science.
And they had failed. Horribly.
Now, Jonah and his team were trapped inside, left to clean up the monsters they had made.
