Chapter 244: Price of a Soul
Jonah’s body floated in the Genesis Forge, but his mind was somewhere else entirely. He could feel the whole station around him like a second skin.
And it was crushing him.
“Jonah, can you hear me?” Vanessa said , her voice sounding distant. “Your vitals are spiking. Your heart rate is at 180. Brain activity is off the charts. You need to pull back!”
But he couldn’t pull back. The bonding had already started. If he let go now, if he broke the connection before it finished, he would snap back into his body so hard it would probably kill him.
So he held on. And endured.
The memories hit him next.
Not his memories. The station’s memories. Thousands of years of existence, preserved in data. He saw the Artificers who had built this place. He felt their hope as they built a sanctuary for their dying civilization. He watched through archived sensors as they loaded the last ships and departed, leaving their greatest creation behind.
For over three thousand years, Haven had waited. It had maintained itself, never forgetting its purpose.
Until now.
“Stay with us!” Ariana’s voice joined Vanessa’s. “You are almost through. Just hold on!”
Hold on to what exactly? Jonah couldn’t remember what his hands felt like. He couldn’t remember the difference between his thoughts and the station’s thoughts. Was he Jonah? Or was he Haven?
He felt a scream build up in his chest, but he couldn’t tell if it was his chest or the station’s power core. Everything was blurring together.
Then the pain started.
His God Mark was burning with fire. The nine-headed beast mark was trying to process more power than it was designed to handle.
His body, still floating in the Forge, began to convulse.
Blood ran from his nose, his ears and his eyes.
In the real world, Vanessa watched in horror as the boy she loved started bleeding from places that shouldn’t bleed.
“Warden, stop this! He’s dying!” Vanessa shouted.
[The bonding cannot be stopped. Only completed. Or terminated.] Warden responded.
“Then terminate it!”
[Termination would result in catastrophic psychic backlash. Probability of survival: 2.3 percent.]
“And if we let it continue?”
[Probability of survival: 34.7 percent. However, probability of permanent psychological damage: 91.2 percent.]
Those weren’t good odds.
Vanessa grabbed Ariana’s arm. “We have to trust him. He’s strong. Stronger than anyone I have ever known.”
“But what if strong isn’t enough?” Ariana asked.
Jonah felt himself breaking into pieces.
His sense of self was breaking apart. One piece was still him, the scared kid from the Undercroft who had somehow become a Weaver. But other pieces were turning into something else. They were becoming part of Haven’s network.
He was dying. Not his body, though that wasn’t doing great either. But his soul was being dissolved into the mind of the station.
And for a moment, he almost let it happen.
It would be so easy to just let go. To become part of something bigger. To finally stop carrying the burden of being Jonah, with all the responsibility and impossible choices that came with it.
Haven whispered to him in the language of code.
Rest. Merge. Become.
He was so tired.
Then he felt something else. He felt a presence in the powerful chaos.
It was Vanessa.
He couldn’t see or hear her, but he could feel her presence through the connection. He could feel her fear and love. She was standing in the real world, watching his body die, refusing to look away.
Waiting for him to come back.
And behind her was Ariana. She looked strong and fierce, her sword still out even though the threat had passed.
They needed him.
Not Haven.
The scared kid who had somehow become strong enough to create life.
The stubborn scrapper who refused to give up no matter how impossible things got.
With everything he had left, Jonah pulled himself back together.
NO, he thought with absolute certainty.
I am not Haven. Haven is mine.
The station shook suddenly. Every system and machine felt the change.
Jonah stopped trying to become the station. He started commanding it instead.
THIS IS WHO I AM, he declared into the network. I AM JONAH. WEAVER. CREATOR. FORGE-HEART.
AND YOU WILL SERVE ME.
Golden light covered every corridor of Haven. Machines that had been dormant for thousands of years suddenly turned on. Construction bays activated. Power cores surged. The whole station became fully active.
[BONDING COMPLETE.] Warden’s voice spread through the station.
[PRIMARY CREATOR RECOGNIZED. ALL SYSTEMS ONLINE. GENESIS FORGE OPERATIONAL.]
In the real world, Jonah’s body became still and relaxed.
The golden light faded from his God Mark. The convulsions had stopped. For a moment, he didn’t move at all.
“Jonah?” Vanessa’s voice broke with emotions. “Jonah, please…”
Then his eyes slowly opened.
They weren’t his normal brown eyes anymore. They glowed faintly with golden light. When he spoke, his voice echoed a bit, as if two voices were speaking at once.
His. And Haven’s.
“I’m here,” he said. “I’m okay.”
The Genesis Forge gently lowered him to the ground. Vanessa and Ariana rushed forward, catching him as his legs collapsed.
“You are bleeding everywhere Jonah,” Vanessa said, quickly checking him for injuries. “And your God Mark looks like it’s been burned. And your eyes are glowing. That is definitely not okay.”
“But I’m alive.” Jonah managed a weak smile. “I will take it.”
Ariana supported his other side, helping them lower him to sit against the wall. “What happened in there? What did you experience?”
“Everything.” Jonah’s golden eyes stared at nothing, seeing things they couldn’t. “I felt the whole station. Its entire history. I almost lost myself in it. I almost became it.”
“But you didn’t,” Vanessa said firmly. She put her hands around his face, forcing him to look at her. “You came back. You are still you.”
“Yeah.” His hand came up to cover hers. His hay were shaking. “Still me. Just… more. I can feel Haven now. Not like I feel my Progeny. More like… it’s part of my body.”
[Correct.] Warden’s holographic form appeared beside them. [You are now bonded to all the system in this facility. You can command any function. Access any archive. The full resources of the Life-Weaver legacy are yours to wield.]
Jonah closed his eyes, and when he opened them again, the glow had dimmed but not disappeared. “The enemy ship. The one tracking us. How long do we have?”
[Revised estimate: thirty-one hours. The digital threat defeat has stopped their spy system, but their projected course remains unchanged.]
“Thirty-one hours.” Jonah tried to stand up but he lost his balance and allowed Vanessa pull him back down. “Okay. So we have a day to get Haven’s defenses online. To build guardians and prepare for battle.”
“You need to rest Jonah,” Vanessa insisted. “Your body just went through something impossible. You are a mess.”
“The galaxy doesn’t care if I am a mess.” Jonah felt how tired he was becoming. He could barely keep his eyes open. “We have to…”
“We have to keep you alive,” Ariana interrupted. “Vanessa is right. You need rest. At least, just for a few hours. Your body needs time to adapt to whatever just happened to it.”
“But the ship…”
“Will still be there when you wake up.” Vanessa’s voice was gentle but firm. “And you will be able to think clearly instead of running on fumes and trauma.”
Jonah wanted to argue. There was so much to do. So many systems to activate. So many preparations to make.
But his body had other ideas. The adrenaline that had been keeping him conscious was fading fast. Everything was becoming blurry.
“Just… few hours…” he said in a low voice.
“As many as you need,” Vanessa promised.
She held him as he finally allowed himself to sleep, letting his head rest on her shoulder. Within seconds, he was unconscious.
Ariana looked at Warden’s holographic form. “Can the station defend itself if they attack while he’s out?”
[Negative. The Genesis Forge is now active, but all advanced systems require the Forge-Heart’s command. I can maintain basic functions, but weapons and guardians need a living will to guide them.]
“So we are defenseless for the next few hours.”
[Essentially, yes.]
“Fantastic.” Ariana brought out her sword and moved to the chamber entrance. “Then I will stand and watch. If Sterling’s people arrive early, they will have to go through me first.”
Vanessa wanted to say something brave. But she was too tired, and they all knew how useless one warrior would be against a warship.
Instead, she just held Jonah closer and whispered, “Please wake up in time. Please.”
The station hummed around them, alive now but waiting. Waiting for its core to wake. Waiting to be used. Waiting for the battle that was coming whether they were ready or not.
Above Haven, hidden in the swirling nebula, Sterling’s ship was slowly getting close to them.
