Chapter 241: What is in the Forge?
The alarms kept making loud noises.
Jonah’s heart was beating hard as Warden’s holographic form became unstable.
“Vanessa, can you trace it?” Ariana had pulled out her sword, as if a sword could fight a digital threat. “Find out how deep it has gone?”
“Working on it.” Vanessa’s hands moved fast across her datapad, but her hands were shaking. “It has hidden itself in Haven’s sensor network. All the cameras, diagnostic tools and scanners. If Warden can see it, this thing can see it too.”
Which meant Sterling knew exactly where they were and what they had found.
“Can we cut it off?” Jonah asked. “Isolate the infected systems?”
“Not without shutting down half of the station.” Vanessa pulled up system diagrams. “This thing is smart. It has attached itself into essential systems. Life support. Gravity generators. The docking bay controls. If we try to get rid of it, we might kill ourselves.”
[Analysis complete.] Warden’s voice broke through the chaos.
[The unauthorized program is an advanced tracker with adaptive camouflage protocols. It attached itself to your ship during your last spatial jump and has been dormant until entering the range of a network it could exploit.]
“Dormant?” Ariana’s eyes narrowed. “You mean it was waiting. Watching for the right moment to activate.”
[Yes. The program is transmitting data on a compressed quantum frequency. The range is limited, meaning there is likely a relay station somewhere in this star system that is sending the signal further.]
The truth of the situation suddenly became very clear to Jonah “Sterling doesn’t know where we are. Not exactly. But someone close enough to hear the signal does.”
“A ship,” Vanessa said, her voice flat. “He sent a ship to follow us. To track us to Haven.”
“How long do we have?” Jonah asked.
Warden was quiet for a moment, running calculations.
[Based on the signal strength and frequency patterns, I estimate the relay is placed about six light-hours from our current location. If they began moving toward us the moment the tracker activated, their arrival time would around forty-three hours.]
Less than two days.
Draven would have made a joke about that. Something about how they couldn’t catch a break even deep in space. But Draven wasn’t here. He was fighting his own war on the ground while they had flown off chasing ancient legends.
“What can we do,” Ariana said, her voice sounding serious. “We can’t fight an unknown enemy force. Our only weapon is Nomad, and Jonah can barely fly it without exhausting himself. We need other options.”
“We could run,” Vanessa offered, though she didn’t sound convinced. “Jump back the way we came. Try to lose them.”
“And abandon Haven?” Jonah looked around at the ancient technology surrounding them. “This is our only chance to build a fleet. To fight Sterling on equal terms. If we run now, we go home empty-handed.”
“If we stay, we might not go home at all.” Vanessa responded.
[If I may offer a suggestion.] Warden’s form appeared, becoming stable now. The AI had won the digital battle for now.
[There is a third option. The Genesis Forge.]
They all turned to look at the massive sphere floating in the middle of the chamber.
“You want me to bond with it now?” Jonah asked. “While there’s an enemy fleet coming?”
[No. I suggest we speed up the timeline. If you were to start the bonding process immediately, the Forge could begin construction of defensive platforms. Not full ships, but autonomous guardian units. Think of them as the station’s core defense system.]
“How long would that process take?” Ariana asked.
[First guardian unit could be operational in eighteen hours. Additional units can be ready every six hours after. By the time the enemy arrives, Haven could be protected by a small but effective defensive fleet.]
Vanessa was already shaking her head. “That’s too fast. The psychic strain would too much to handle. Jonah, you would be pushing yourself harder than you ever have before.”
“I know.” Jonah said.
“You could burn out. Permanently damage your connection to your powers. Or even worse.”
“I know that too.” Jonah moved closer to the Genesis Forge, feeling the powerful attraction it had on him becoming more intense the closer he got to it. “But what choice do we have? If Sterling’s people take Haven, they get access to all this knowledge. All this technology. They could build their own fleet. Turn the Life-Weavers’ legacy into more weapons.”
He looked back at Vanessa. At the fear and frustration and love all mixed together in the was she looked.
“I have to try,” he said quietly. “You know I do.”
She closed her eyes, and for a moment he thought she might argue. He thought she might tell him to find another way. But when she opened them again, her look had changed.
“Then I’m keeping an eye on you every second,” she said firmly. “And if your vital signs start going critical, I’m pulling you out. I don’t care if the guardian is half-finished. Your life is worth more than any ship.”
“Deal.”
Ariana moved to stand beside Vanessa. “I am going to keep a lookout for the approaching ship. If they get here before we are ready, I’ll buy you whatever time I can.”
“With what?” Vanessa asked. “No offense, but you’re one person with a sword against a ship.”
“I am one person with a sword, the blessing of the Phoenix Empress, and a strong instinct to protect my allies.” Ariana gave a small smile. “They will find me more troublesome than they anticipate.”
[Preparations are complete.] Warden pointed toward the Forge. A path of light appeared, leading from where Jonah stood to the middle of the sphere.
[When you are ready, Inheritor, step forward. The bonding process will begin automatically.]
Jonah took a deep breath. His God Mark was glowing now, reacting to being so close to such a huge amount of creation power. This was what he had been building toward since the day he first awakened his power. Every Progeny he had made. Every synthesis he had survived. All of it leading to this moment.
To becoming not just a creator, but a Forge.
“Wait.” Vanessa grabbed his hand. “Before you do this. Before you go into whatever trance or meditation or this requires.”
“Yeah?”
She pulled him close and kissed him. It was not a gentle kiss. This was the kiss of someone who might not get another chance. Who needed him to know how she felt in case the worst happened.
When they finally separated, Jonah was dizzy for reasons that had nothing to do with psychic connections.
“Come back to me,” Vanessa whispered. “I don’t care about ships or wars or saving the world. Come back to me.”
“I will,” he promised. “Always.”
Then he turned and walked the path of light.
The moment he stepped into the Genesis Forge, everything changed.
It wasn’t painful. It was just too much to handle. The Forge’s powerful mind reached out to connect with his.
And Jonah allowed the connection to form.
The connection formed instantly. Suddenly he wasn’t just standing in the Forge. He was part of it. He could feel the whole station around him like an extension of his own body. He could feel all the systems, the dormant construction bays, all reserve of power and potential.
[Bonding successful.] Warden’s voice sounded distant and faint in his mind.
[Forge-Heart established. Beginning guardian synthesis. Estimated completion: seventeen hours, forty-two minutes.]
Jonah felt himself going deeper into the connection. His physical body was still there, he could sense it distantly, but his mind was now reaching out, expanding into the Forge and into the Haven station itself.
He reached into that huge pool of potential and began to create.
Not with his hands but with his will. With the pure intention to protect. To defend. To ensure that this place, this legacy of the Life-Weavers, would survive long enough to serve its purpose.
The genesis fluid in the construction bays began to move. Crystalline frameworks started to form. The first guardian unit was being built from nothing but thought and ancient technology.
He completely lost track of time. He didn’t know if it had been hours, minutes, or even days. There was only the work. The creation process. The endless, exhausting, wonderful act of bringing something new into existence.
Somewhere in the real world, alarms were probably still screaming. Vanessa was probably monitoring his vital signs and panicking at the readings. Ariana was probably preparing for battle.
And somewhere out in space, Sterling’s ship was getting closer.
But here, in this moment, in this union of creator and creation, Jonah felt something he hadn’t felt in months.
Peace.
He was doing what he was meant to do. What he had always been meant to do.
He was creating a better future, one guardian at a time.
Even if that future killed him in the process.
