Chapter 243: Thorne’s Return?
Vanessa’s hands moved fast across her datapad, trying to find hidden information within the lines of code.
The parasitic signal was moving. Every time she thought she had it trapped, it escaped easily. Whatever this thing was, it was smart.
Too smart to be just a tracking program.
“Found you,” she whispered, finally finding the signal’s true source.
Then she wished she hadn’t.
The data that came back made her feel scared. She ran the analysis three times, hoping she made a mistake. But the results were the same every time.
“Guys,” she said, her voice tight. “I think we have a problem. A really big problem.”
Ariana was keeping watch at the chamber’s entrance, holding her sword ready to fight. “Bigger than an enemy fleet tracking us across the galaxy?”
“Yeah. Much bigger.” Vanessa brought up the signal’s code structure. “This isn’t just a tracker. It’s piece of someone’s mind, turned into digital code and weaponized.”
“Whose mind?” Ariana moved closer, studying the strange patterns flowing through the projection.
Vanessa’s hands were shaking as she brought up the last piece of data. It was an identity hidden deep in the corrupted code. A name.
“Dr. Aris Thorne.”.
“That’s impossible,” Ariana said. “Thorne died at the factory. Jonah was there. He saw it happen.”
“His body died. But Sterling must have uploaded a copy of his mind first. Or maybe only a few pieces of it. The parts he needed.” Vanessa said, her voice was flat.
CRACK.
The sound came from everywhere at once.
The lights in the chamber began to flash. Warden’s holographic form glitched.
[Warning. Core systems compromised. Foreign entity achieving administrative access. Time to full breach: forty-seven seconds.]
“Vanessa!” Ariana’s voice broke through the chaos. “Can you stop it?”
“I can try.” Vanessa was already working on her datapad, entering the code of Haven’s network. “But I have to go in there. Into the system itself.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means my mind will enter a digital space. A kind of virtual battlefield where the code becomes… real. In a way.” Vanessa was already connecting neural interface cables to her datapad. “Just keep me alive out here. If something happens to my body while I’m inside…”
She didn’t finish her statement.
Ariana moved to stand guard over Vanessa’s body. “Go. I’ll protect you.”
Vanessa took a deep breath and activated the neural link.
Suddenly she wasn’t in chamber anymore. She was standing in a digital world that her mind could barely grasp. Lines of code flowed around her. And somewhere in this impossible space, a predator was hunting.
She found it near what she instinctively recognized as Haven’s core systems. It was a distorted shape made of corrupted code and fragmented memories.
Dr. Thorne. Or what was left of him.
The digital figure looked like someone had taken Thorne’s image and broken it into many pieces, then glued them back together wrong. Parts of him flashed and glitched.
When he spoke, his voice came from a different directions.
“The… Creator… seeks… the Art… of his… better.”
Each word sounded broken, like multiple versions of Thorne trying to speak at the same time but couldn’t quite line up.
“Thorne?” Vanessa tried to keep her voice steady. “Can you understand me?”
“Understand… yes… no… fragments… chained… must… obey… sterling… master… creator… owner… of… what remains of me…”
Vanessa felt bad for him, even though she tried not to. This wasn’t really Thorne. It was pieces of him, enslaved and weaponized.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “I’m sorry this happened to you.”
“Sorry… irrelevant… mission… critical… must… get… Life-Weaver… secrets…” The digital figure suddenly focused on her, all its scattered attention coming together like a spotlight. “You… will… not… stop… me.”
In the real world, alarms suddenly went off.
Ariana turned around as panels in the walls began to open. Maintenance drones poured out like angry hornets. Small, flying machines with cutting tools and welding torches.
“Vanessa, whatever you are doing in there, do it faster!” Ariana’s moved her sword quickly, cutting down the nearest drones. But for every one she destroyed, three more appeared.
THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.
Heavier footsteps echoed through the chamber. Larger machines were activating. Construction mechs. Security bots. Everything Haven had for maintenance and defense, now turned against them.
Jonah was in the Genesis Forge, completely unaware. Lost in his connection to the station’s creative heart.
In the digital world, Vanessa faced the threat directly.
“I can’t let you do this,” she said. “I won’t let Sterling take over this place.”
“You… cannot… stop… what… has… already… started…” The digital form expanded, becoming a wall of corrupted code that crashed toward her like a wave.
Vanessa raised her hands, and her own code responded. Defensive algorithms came up instantly. Firewalls shot up like shields. She had spent years studying runic engineering, learning how magic and technology work together.
Now she was going to use every bit of that knowledge to fight a dead man’s ghost.
The battle was unlike anything she had ever experienced. In the digital space, the attacks came in the form of destructive programs and spreading viruses. Her defense was hiding her data and using smart, changing programs. They fought with raw data, each trying to overwrite the other’s existence.
Vanessa created barriers. The Thorne-AI broke them.
“You’re… good…” the ghost rasped. “But… I… was… genius… even… destroyed… I… am… superior…”
And it was right. Vanessa could feel herself losing ground. The AI had been designed for this. She was just a human mind trying to fight on a battlefield that wasn’t meant for her.
In the physical world, Ariana was starting to lose control of the fight.
A construction mech’s huge arm moved to attack her. She dropped and rolled under it, then came up and attacked, her sword easily cutting the oil and fluid lines. The mech stumbled but didn’t fall.
More drones came out and attacked. More machines activated.
She fought her way to Vanessa’s unconscious body and stood over it, her sword flashing in constant motion.
And the machines were endless.
“Jonah!” she shouted toward the Genesis Forge. “If you can hear me, we need you! Now!”
But Jonah couldn’t respond. He was too deep in his connection, too far from the physical world.
In the digital realm, the Thorne-AI was closing in for the kill.
“Sterling… will… have… this… place…” it said, its broken voice almost triumphant. “And… you… will… cease…”
Vanessa’s defenses were failing. Her mind was being compressed, crushed under the weight of the AI’s assault. She could feel herself breaking apart like Thorne had.
This was the end. They had come all this way, found the ancient sanctuary, discovered the key to fighting Sterling.
And they were going to lose it all to a ghost.
“I’m sorry, Jonah,” she whispered to herself. “I couldn’t…”
Then everything exploded with golden light.
Not just the digital world. The physical one too. Every surface in Haven suddenly blazed with radiant energy, so bright Ariana had to shield her eyes.
[PRIMARY CREATOR BONDED.] Warden’s voice sounded extremely loud through all the speakers and systems.
[ALL SYSTEMS ONLINE. PURGING FOREIGN ENTITY.]
The Genesis Forge suddenly burst with powerful energy.
Jonah’s unconscious body was surrounded by a ring of pure energy. His God Mark blazed like a star. And through the bond he had just made with the station itself, his will was made manifest.
To protect, defend and get rid of the threat.
In the digital world, a tsunami of clean code crashed into the Thorne-AI. It wasn’t just attacking it but erasing it. Overwriting every corrupted piece with Haven’s programming.
“Finally… free…” were its last words before it dissolved into nothing.
In the physical world, all the machines suddenly stopped. Then slowly powered down and returned to their docking stations as if nothing had happened.
The battle was over.
Vanessa gasped as she was pulled out from the digital space, her mind returning back to her body. She blinked, feeling confused, looking up at Ariana’s worried face.
“You are alive,” Ariana said, helping her sit up.
“Barely.” Vanessa’s head was pounding. “What happened?”
They both turned to look at the Genesis Forge.
Jonah was still there, but something was different. His body was stiff and shaking. His face showed he was in pain.
The bonding process was tearing him apart.
“Jonah!” Vanessa quickly stood up, but Warden’s holographic form appeared, blocking her path.
[Do not interfere. The bonding is critical. Any interruption could kill him.]
“The bonding is killing him anyway!” Vanessa’s voice cracked. “Look at him!”
[The process is… severe. More severe than projected. His soul was not designed for this burden. But if he can endure… if he can hold on… Haven will be his to command.]
If he can endure.
If he can hold on.
If he survives.
Vanessa watched helplessly as Jonah’s body convulsed.
And all she could do was stand there, praying that the boy she loved was strong enough to survive becoming a god.
