Chapter 138: 138. The Corrupted
The borderlands at the Elven Dwarven continent were dying.
Yuki saw it first, a stain spreading across the hills where the elven forests met the dwarven mountains. The trees had changed. Their trunks were twisted, their branches clawed, their leaves black and dripping. Flowers that should have been harmless now gaped with tooth-lined petals. Vines moved like snakes, searching for something to wrap around, something to crush.
“Omg, how far does it go?” Odessa asked. Her Azure Sky Dragon circling overhead, its scales reflecting the sickly light.
Hilda consulted her device, its crystal face flickering with corrupted readings. “It’s like ten miles. Or twenty. Now it’s closer to fifty. The demon is expanding its territory faster than we can anticipate”
“Fifty miles of corrupted forest,” Alfred said. He’d already raised his shield, scanning the treeline for movement. “And we’re walking into it.”
Yuki drew both katanas. Verida’s blade hummed in her grip. “We’re not walking into it. We’re walking through it. The Demon general is at the center. We will kill it, then everything else dies.”
Uru pulsed on her shoulder, Agreeing as They moved into the forest.
—
The trees attacked them at the border.
Treants.
Not all of them. Just the ones closest to the path, their roots tearing free of the earth, their branches swinging like clubs. They moved with a purpose that wasn’t their own, directed and controlled.
Alfred met the first one head-on. His shield caught a branch the size of a man, held it, pushed it back. “They’re not fast, but they’re strong.”
“Then don’t let them hit you,” Odessa called. Her Azure Sky Dragon dove, water breath cutting through a cluster of corrupted pines, sending them crashing into each other.
Yuki moved through the chaos. Her katanas found the joints where root met trunk, where the corruption had taken deepest hold. Verida’s blade burned as it cut, the venom eating through corrupted wood, stopping regeneration. Her normal katana did the work of opening wounds; Verida’s made sure they didn’t close.
Uru extended a pseudopod, wrapped it around a vine that had been creeping toward her ankle, and absorbed it whole as the vine dissolved within it. The slime pulsed once—satisfied—and reached for another.
They pushed deeper.
The forest changed as they advanced. The trees grew thicker, their trunks fused into walls of bark and rot. The flowers grew larger, their petals big enough to swallow a person whole. One lunged at Hilda as she passed, its fanged petals closing around her—she jammed her staff between them, the crystal at its tip blazing with light. The flower recoiled, shriveled, died.
“Stay close,” Yuki said. “Don’t let anything separate us.”
They formed a tight formation. Alfred at the front, shield raised. Yuki on his left, her katanas ready. Odessa on his right, her dragon coiled above, watching. Hilda in the center, her devices humming with counter-corruption frequencies. Uru on Yuki’s shoulder, pulsing with each new threat.
The Corrupter’s garden pressed in from all sides.
—
They found the center at dusk.
The forest opened into a clearing, if it could be called that. The ground was bare, black, pulsing with veins of purple light. And at the center, a tree that shouldn’t exist. Its trunk was wider than any Yuki had seen, its branches spread across the clearing like grasping hands, its roots plunged deep into the earth, drawing something up from below.
The Corrupter sat within the tree’s heart.
Its body was fused with the bark now, its limbs replaced by branches, its skin replaced by moss and rot. Its eyes—two pits of darkness—opened when they entered the clearing.
“More gardeners,” it said. Its voice was the rustle of dead leaves, the crack of splitting wood. “Have you come prune me? To burn my children?” It gestured at the corrupted plant based monsters.”
Yuki raised her katanas. “Surrender…”
“No, I think I wont. You’re here to die. Like the dwarves. Like the elves. Like all the things that thought they owned this lands…but they don’t!.” It raised one hand—a claw of twisted root and rot. “I am the land now.”
The tree moved.
Its branches swept down, and the clearing became a killing floor. Roots erupted from the earth, grasping for ankles, for throats. Vines lashed from the canopy, wrapping, strangling. Flowers opened their tooth-lined petals and lunged.
Alfred was the first to fall, not Killed, but buried. A root caught his leg, dragged him under before he could swing his shield. Odessa’s dragon dove to pull him out, and a branch flogged it across its body and sent it crashing into the ground.
Odessa screamed. Hilda ran toward the crash, her devices blazing, and the Corrupter’s vines wrapped around her staff, tore it from her grip and sent her stumbling.
Yuki was alone.
She moved. Verida’s blade cut through roots, through vines, through anything that reached for her. Her normal katana deflected the branches that swung from above. She carved a path toward the tree’s heart, toward the Corrupter’s eyes, toward the only thing that could end this.
“You’re persistent,” the Corrupter said. “I admire persistence. It makes the breaking sweeter.”
A root caught her ankle. She cut it. Another caught her wrist. She cut it. Another wrapped around her waist, lifted her off the ground, squeezed.
A branch came from behind, no sound, no warning, just sudden impact that drove towards her chest but Beast Shift activated through instinct, the flesh around the wound dissolved—not into blood or meat, but into the same translucent, gelatinous matter that made up her Uru’s body. The branch passed through her chest and when it withdrew, the wound sealed.
Uru moved.
The slime launched from her shoulder, expanded mid-flight, wrapped around the root that held her. Its gelatinous body pulsed, pulsed, pulsed—and the root withered. The corruption drained out of it, into Uru, leaving nothing but dead wood that crumbled at her touch.
Yuki dropped. Landed. Kept moving.
“Impossible,” the Corrupter breathed. “That slime—it shouldn’t be able to—”
Uru pulsed again. Brighter this time. Its body was changing, shifting, growing. The corruption it had been absorbing for weeks, months—the blight from the borderlands, the taint from the forest, the rot from the Corrupter’s own garden, all the battles it had been through, experience—all of it was flowing into Uru, and Uru was becoming something new.
[Ding!]
[Uru has reached Level Cap]
The notification flashed in Yuki’s vision. She ignored it. She was ten feet from the tree’s heart. Eight. Six.
The Corrupter screamed. Roots rose in a wall between her and it. Vines lashed from every direction. Flowers lunged with jaws wide.
Uru pulsed one more time.
[Evolution Requirements Met]
[Evolution available. Initiate?]
Yuki reached the tree’s heart. She drove Verida’s blade into the Corrupter’s core.
The scream that followed was not the scream of a demon. It was the scream of a forest dying. Roots withered. Vines crumbled. Flowers closed their petals and did not open again.
The Corrupter’s eyes—the last thing to fade—fixed on Yuki. “You think this ends with me? The Desecrator is coming. Your dragon, your kingdom, your little family—none of it will survive.”
Yuki twisted the blade. “No, I think we will!”
The Corrupter’s eyes went dark. The tree collapsed. The clearing died.
—
They dug Alfred out of the earth. Pulled Hilda from the undergrowth. Found Odessa and her Dragonkin, battered but alive, half-buried in what had been a flower’s stomach.
Yuki sat on the edge of the clearing, watching the forest return to what it had been before the corruption. Trees that had been twisted straightened. Flowers that had been monstrous shrank to their proper size. The land was healing.
Uru pulsed on her shoulder. Its light was different now—deeper, richer. Ready.
“Not yet,” Yuki said to it. “Owen has an idea he wants to try out.”
