Chapter 151: 151. From Orphan to Family, a dawn of peace
The rift closed behind Owen with a shimmer of displaced air.
He stood on the plains outside Nexus Prime, where the battle had been fought, where the demon army had been broken, where the hunters were already beginning the long work of tending to their wounded and counting their dead. The sun was breaking through the clouds now, the purple-red stain that had covered the sky for weeks finally fading to something that looked like morning.
Yuki was waiting for him.
She stood at the edge of the field where he had left her, Uru in her arms, the child’s head resting against her shoulder. her hair was matted with demon blood, her face was streaked with dirt and exhaustion. But she was smiling.
Owen walked to her as he crossed the space between them without hurry.
“The demons?” she asked.
“Sealed, thought I purified their lands, and gave them a chance to become something better, to redeem themselves” He stopped in front of her. “I just hope I’m not making a mistakes”
Yuki’s smile widened. “You have given them mercy, Owen. That can’t be a mistaken in my book”
“Well then, let’s wait and see What they do with that mercy.”
Uru stirred in her arms, blinked up at him, and reached out with small hands. “Dragon uncle. Up.”
Owen took her. She was light, weightless almost, her green skin warm against his chest, her hair shimmering with the same light that pulsed through his scales. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pressed her face into his shoulder.
“Sleepy~” she murmured.
“Then sleep,” Owen said. “We’re done fighting.”
She was already gone.
Yuki leaned into him, her head finding its place against his chest, her arms wrapping around his waist. They stood like that for a long moment, the three of them, while the morning sun rose higher and the battlefield around them began to stir with the sounds of recovery.
—
The others found them an hour later.
Odessa arrived first, her Azure Sky Dragonkin gliding down from a sky that was finally, finally blue. She landed lightly, her hair windswept, her eyes bright with a lightness that had been missing for months.
“The elves are holding a ceremony,” she said. “Sylnara wants you there. Something about an ancient alliance and the dawn of a new age. It sounds terribly formal, but she said you could bring friends.”
“Friends?” Leah dropped from a ridge above.
“All of us. Apparently, we’re famous.”
Alfred appeared at the edge of the group, his shield cleaned, his armor repaired, his thermos already in hand. “Fame is a heavy burden. I recommend tea.”
He poured. They drank. The tea was hot, strong, and calming. exactly what they needed.
Solhart approached as the sun climbed toward midday. His sword was sheathed, his thousand-year-old surreal face turned toward the horizon. “The cities are secure. The beastfolk continent is safe. The dwarves are already rebuilding their caves” He looked at Owen. “You did what none of us could.”
“Just what needed to be done, ya know .”
Solhart smiled. It was a tired smile, but genuine. “Indeed, Dragon King. Just what needed to be done.”
He walked away, toward the city, toward the long work of rebuilding that would take years but would be done because there were still people willing to do it.
—
They returned to Drak’thar as the sun set.
The Hatchery was waiting. Its light pulsed in the distance, steady and warm, and as they walked through the gates of the palace that had been empty for a thousand years, Owen felt something settle in his chest. Something that had been waiting since the first moment he woke in that egg, since the first time he saw Yuki’s face, since the first time he understood what he was meant to become.
The eggs were still there. Five of them, floating in their cradles, pulsing with light that matched his heartbeat. They had matured in the weeks he had been gone, their shells darker now, their light stronger. They were waiting.
Uru woke as they entered. She slipped from Owen’s arms and padded to the edge of the Hatchery, her small hands pressed against the barrier that held the eggs, her eyes wide.
“When will they hatch?” she asked.
“Soon…I think” Owen said. “When they’re ready.”
“Will they be dragon uncles like you?”
“Lol, maybe. Each one might be different. Each with their own unique disposition and abilities”
Uru considered this, then nodded. “Good. We need more dragons, maybe dragon aunties!”
Yuki laughed. The sound echoed through the Hatchery, through the empty spaces that were not so empty anymore, through the silence that had held for a thousand years and was finally, finally breaking.
Then they left the eggs to their waiting.
—
The night was quiet.
Owen stood on the palace balcony, looking out at the kingdom within the dimension that had been granted to him, it’s vastness waiting to be explored.
In all the time he had had it, there wasn’t time to explore it fully, The dimension was vast, there were more floating islands that had spawned now below the three that original were here.
The gardens were blooming again, the Tower of Royals gleamed in the moonlight, the Hatchery pulsed with the rhythm of new life. Below, the others were scattered through the halls—Odessa asleep in her chambers, her dragon coiled beside her; Leah meditating in the courtyard, her transformation flickering at the edges of her control; Alfred making tea in the kitchen, his movements slow and peaceful.
Yuki came to stand beside him. Uru was in her arms, asleep again, her small face pressed against Yuki’s shoulder.
“What happens now?” Yuki asked.
Owen considered the question. The demon continent was sealed, purified, given a chance. The mortal realms were healing. The Will was still out there, somewhere, waiting, but for now, it was quiet. For now, there was peace.
“We live,” he said. “We rebuild. We let the world become what it’s going to become.” He looked at her. “We finally Enjoy our time together.”
Yuki blushed.
“And the Will? The cosmic boundaries? The other worlds your system have hinted at?”
Owen’s jaw tightened. “Eh, we’ll prepare. We’ll grow stronger. We make sure that when it wakes, if it wakes, we’ll be ready to meet it.” He let out a breath. “But not tonight. Tonight, we rest~.”
Yuki leaned into him. Uru sighed in her sleep, her small body warm against them both.
“The eggs will hatch soon,” Yuki said.
“Yes.”
“And when they do, Drak’thar will have dragons again.”
Owen thought of the Hatchery. At the light pulsing in its heart. At the five eggs that were already beginning to shift, to stir, to reach toward the moment when they would break free and see the sky for the first time.
“Yes,” he said. “And we’ll be here. We’ll teach them. We’ll help them become what they’re meant to be.”
Yuki’s hand found his. Her fingers laced through his claws, warm, steady, here.
“We’ll be a family…” she said.
Owen looked at her. At the woman who had found him in a dungeon, who had tamed him, who had followed him across the world and back again. At the child in her arms, who had been a slime and was now something more. At the kingdom behind them, waiting to be filled.
“A family …” he agreed.
Below, the gardens bloomed. The Hatchery pulsed. The eggs waited.
From an orphan with a lustful crush on a Neighbouring milf…. to a Dragon king who has saved the world and a mission to rebuild his whole race.
And A family he had never intended to have.
