Chapter 150: 150. A Newer Seal for Redemption
Owen looked at them,
The humanoids who would have looked no different from humans if not for their purple skin, their tails and their horns. They cowered before him, thousands of them, pressed together in a crowd that stretched across the blasted earth. Behind them, the demonic beasts—behemoths that had terrorized the hunters, creatures that had broken city walls, whimpered like frightened dogs, their massive forms pressed flat against the ground.
Then He raised his hand.
Mana gathered in his palm, coiling, condensing. The Sovereignty of Space-Time answered his call, bending reality around his fingers, forming the structure of a seal. The same kind of seal that had held the demons for a thousand years. The same kind of seal that Vorthraxx had shattered.
“Wait!” A voice cut through the terrified silence. A demon woman pushed through the crowd, her purple skin pale, her yellow eyes wide. “Please! Not again!”
Owen’s hand paused.
“We were born into this!” she cried. “We had no choice. It was kill or be killed. The miasma, the sealing, the war…none of us asked for it. We were just… here. Please. Have mercy, Dragon King.”
More voices joined hers. A chorus of pleas rising from the crowd, desperate, raw. Demons dropped to their knees, their claws pressed to the earth, their horns bowed. Some were weeping. Some had their eyes squeezed shut, as if they couldn’t bear to watch what came next.
Owen looked at them coldly.
His hand did not lower.
But he did not finish the seal.
He thought about what they were asking. They were sentient beings. They the capacity for language, culture, families. Most of them had been born into this continent, raised in the miasma, shaped by the remnants of the last war that had been fought over a thousand years ago. They had followed Vorthraxx because he was the one who promised them something other than the imprisonment they were born into.
In truth, they probably had the capacity for coexistence. It was possible. He could purify this continent if he wanted to, cleanse it of the miasma that had poisoned it for a millennium. He could make it a home, a real home, where demons could live without the rot eating at their lungs and their souls.
He could do all of that.
But was it worth the risk?
His jaw tightened. Their mere presence was a reminder of everything that had been lost. The wars. The battles. The deaths. Every grave he would walked past now. Every dragon who had fallen. Every human, beastfolk, elf, dwarf who had died because the demons had followed Vorthraxx into the other continents.
And besides the sentient demons, there were the demonic beasts. The creatures that had no sentient conginitive language, no culture, presumably no capacity for anything except hunger and violence. They might kneel due to his pressure but They would not beg. They would only wait for another chance to break free.
Owen’s hand trembled. Killing intent bled from him, thick enough to choke. The demons felt it as their pleas faltered, their bodies went rigid, their eyes filled with the understanding that they were looking at something that could erase them. All of them. In a breath.
He could do it. He could kill them all. End the demon race forever. Remove the threat, the memory, the reminder.
But…
That would make him no different from Vorthraxx.
That would make him no different from the Will.
He let out a breath as his killing intent receded. The demons slumped, gasping, weeping and not understanding why they were still alive.
Then Owen lowered his hand. Then he raised it again.
But this time, he did not reach for the seal.
He reached deeper.
His mana exploded outward, flooding the continent, pushing into every crevice, every cave, every corner of the blasted earth. The demons cried out as it passed through them, it wasn’t burning, wasnt hurting, it was cleansing. The miasma that had been in their lungs since birth lifted, drawn out of their bodies like poison from a wound. They gasped, coughed, wept as they breathed clean air for the first time in their lives.
Owen’s mana battled the corruption that had soaked into the land for a thousand years. It was slow work, harder than anything he had done since returning from the void. The miasma was deep, embedded in the soil, the stone, the very fabric of the little continent. It fought back, tried to cling, tried to survive.
He met it with the full weight of his power. His eyes blazed gold. The veins in his arms pulsed with light. He reached into the earth and pulled.
Solidified miasma rose from the ground in chunks, black and purple, writhing with the last remnants of the Outer-divinity’s corruption that Vorthraxx has used to control the race of demons and Molded the demonic beasts. Owen tore a rift in space and pushed it through, sending it into the void where nothing could ever be corrupted again.
Chunk by chunk. Mile by mile. The little continent began to change.
The blasted earth that had been grey for a thousand years darkened to brown. The air that had been thick with rot lightened, thinned, became breathable. The sky, purple and red for as long as any demon could remember, began to clear.
Owen pulled the last of the miasma from the deepest caverns, the highest peaks, the farthest shores. He sealed the void rift behind it. Then he let his mana settle, let it soak into the soil, let it become part of the land that would now have to grow again.
The continent was quiet, the silence of something waiting to be born. The earth was bare, raw, stripped of everything that had poisoned it. But it was clean.
He looked at the demons as they were still kneeling, still weeping, but their tears were different now. Some were staring at the sky, watching the clouds turn white, watching the sun break through for the first time in their lives. Others were touching the earth, feeling soil that wasn’t poisoned, air that didn’t burn.
Then Owen moved.
He appeared before the demon woman who had first spoken. She looked up at him, her face streaked with tears, her yellow eyes wide.
“I will still seal you all in, the continent will remain sealed” Owen said. His voice carried across the land, reaching every demon, every beast, every living thing that had been born in this place. “But I have purified it. You have clean earth. Clean air. Clean water. You have a chance to live, to build, to become something other than what you were.”
He looked down at her.
“I am naming you steward of this continent, of the entire demonic race. You will be responsible for what happens here. You will ensure that no army of demons rises against the world. You will ensure that no war is planned. You will ensure that when I return, I find a people who have chosen to be better.”
Her mouth opened, but no words came out.
“I will come back…” Owen said. “…From time to time, I will come to see what you have made of this place. And if I see even one sign that you are plotting revenge, if I see one army, one weapon, one plan to break this seal and rage against the other races, I will not return to seal you again.”
He let his voice drop. Let the weight of what he was about to say settle into every ear, every heart, every soul.
“I will return to end you. All of you. Forever.”
The silence that followed was absolute.
Owen held the female demon’s gaze for a long moment. Then he turned, tore a rift in space, and stepped through.
Behind him, the demon continent settled into silence.
The war was over. For everyone.
And everyone had been given a chance to become more.
