Fenric flinched as if he’d been struck. He looked at me, seeing the way I was gasping, my body caught in the middle of a biological battle I couldn’t win on my own. The thought that he and Damar were inadvertently hurting me by being ’too strong’ was a bitter pill to swallow.

He looked up at Noah, still having his concerns.

“You think I’m making this up just to have rounds with the little tiger?” He asked, tilting his head, his breath jagged and his eyes unsettled. “Well then, why don’t you find it out yourself?” He asked, getting up to his feet but I instinctively reached for him.

I grabbed his leg, leaving Fenric’s hold, shocking him and Damar.

He opened his eyes and looked at Fenric.

“He’s not lying, Fenric. We can both see the situation she is in right now and even if I hate it, there is nothing we can do to help.”

Fenric’s chest heaved. He looked at the mark on my wrist—the black wolf head—and then at Noah’s desperate, rut-clouded face. The hostility didn’t disappear, but the priority shifted. My survival and the survival of the cubs in my belly were the only things that mattered.

“Then move,” Fenric commanded, though his voice was thick with suppressed emotion. “We’re going to the camp. While you do it with Arinya, we’ll watch to make sure you do not cross the line and hurt her. You shall do what is needed to save her and the cub.”

Noah didn’t argue. He leaned down and scooped me up, his muscles clenching as he turned toward the route they had appeared from.

I clung to him, my mind far gone, my only focus being the way his scent and the temperature of his body seemed to finally quiet the screaming fire in my blood.
