Chapter 134: Dance
NOAH
The dinner service was winding down, the heavy silver replaced by delicate dessert plates, but the air in the room had curdled into something thick and suffocating. Across the sea of tuxedos and shimmering gowns, my eyes found Cassian’s one last time.
It was a loaded, electric moment. The noise of the room, the clinking of crystal, the polite laughter, seemed to mute itself. Cassian looked at me with an expression I couldn’t decipher; it was heavy with unspoken words, a dark gravity that pulled at the very center of my chest. He was with another man.
This man was well-dressed, his suit impeccable, but he radiated a cold, ominous energy that made the hair on my arms stand up.
He looked composed, yet there was a predatory stillness to him. I watched Cassian’s face shift. He went guarded, wary, and then, most disturbingly, resigned. It wasn’t the look of a man greeting a business associate; it was the look of a man walking into a storm he knew he couldn’t avoid.
I watched as Cassian followed this man to the exits.
I half-rose from my chair, my heart hammering against my ribs. Go. Follow him, my gut screamed. But then I looked at the hundreds of people around me, at the cameras flashing, and I forced myself back down.
You’re being paranoid, Noah, I lectured myself. He’s a billionaire. He has security. You’re just reading too much into a business meeting because you’re… because you’re obsessed. I took a shaky sip of water, trying to swallow the lump of dread in my throat.
“He’s a very busy man, Noah. Don’t let his brooding ruin your evening.”
Alex was leaning in close, his voice a smooth, comforting silk. He reached out, his fingers grazing the back of my hand. “You’ve been a thousand miles away for the last twenty minutes. Come back to me.”
I tried to smile, but it felt brittle. “I’m sorry. I just… Cassian is gone, and that man he left with looked, ”
“Business, Noah. Just business,” Alex interrupted gently, his thumb tracing a slow, hypnotic circle on my skin. “This is a night for celebration. For a successful project. You look incredible tonight. I haven’t been able to take my eyes off you.”
The compliment should have made me flutter. Alex was everything a person was supposed to want: kind, successful, and currently looking at me like I was the only thing in the room that mattered. But as he spoke, my mind kept flickering back to the hallway, to the way the light had glinted off The man’s eyes, and the hollow silence Cassian had left behind.
The lighting in the ballroom shifted, softening into a romantic, amber glow. The string quartet transitioned from upbeat Vivaldi to a slow, sweeping waltz. In the center of the room, the grand dance floor cleared, inviting the couples to take their positions.
The layout of the Llotja de Mar was cinematic, rows of tables encircling the polished marble floor, with cameras positioned on cranes to capture the “prestige” of the event for the evening news. It was a serene, intimate atmosphere, the kind of setting designed for grand romantic gestures.
Alex stood, extending his hand toward me. His eyes were bright with expectation. “Dance with me?”
My blood turned to ice.
Dance? Here? In front of everyone?
My mind went into a frantic, high-speed spin. This wasn’t just a dance; this was a statement. The event was televised. If I stood up and took Alex’s hand, I wasn’t just his assistant anymore. I would be his partner on the evening news.
What would my coworkers at the firm think? What would my mother say when she saw her “disappointing” son waltzing with one of the most powerful men in the country? The shame hit me in a sickening wave, followed by the terrifying, unacknowledged truth of my own attraction to men, a truth I hadn’t even come to terms with.
“Alex, I… I can’t,” I stammered, my hands clenching the fabric of my trousers. “I’m a terrible dancer. Truly. I’d be a disaster. Everyone is watching.”
“Let them watch,” Alex said, his voice low and steady. “I want them to see you.”
“I’d rather be buried alive,” I whispered, my voice cracking. “Please. I’m too shy for this. I don’t want to embarrass you.”
Alex didn’t pull away. Instead, he dropped his hand and let out a soft, wounded sigh. He pressed a hand to his chest, his expression shifting into one of mock-hurt.
“You don’t want to dance with me?” he asked, his voice tilting into a playful pout. “I’m hurt, Noah. Truly. I spent all that time picking out this suit for you, and I can’t even get one dance?”
He gave me the “sad puppy” eyes, a look so harmless and cutesy that it felt impossible to fight. I looked around and realized that the people at the neighboring tables were starting to notice our hushed back-and-forth.
They were smiling, clearly expecting the handsome billionaire to successfully woo his shy companion. The social pressure began to mount, a physical weight on my shoulders.
“Maybe later?” I tried, my voice weak. “When it’s less crowded?”
“I don’t care if you step on my toes,” Alex persisted, his charm relentless and gentle. He leaned down, his face inches from mine. “I’ll lead, Noah. You just have to follow me. Just one dance. That’s all I’m asking for. For me?”
My resolve, already paper-thin, began to crumble. The guilt of refusing someone who had been so “kind” to me over the last two days finally outweighed my fear.
With a trembling breath, I reached out and placed my hand in his. Alex’s grip was firm and triumphant as he led me toward the center of the floor.
The moment we stepped under the spotlights, I lost my rhythm. My legs felt like they were made of lead. On the first turn, I stepped squarely on the toe of his expensive leather shoes.
“I’m sorry! I’m so sorry,” I hissed, my face flaming.
“Shh,” Alex whispered, his hand sliding to my waist, the other holding my hand aloft in a perfect frame. “You’re fine. Look at me, not your feet.”
He was patient, guiding me through the steps with soft corrections. He adjusted the position of my hand on his shoulder, his touch reassuring. Slowly, the sheer grace of his movement began to pull me along. Around us, other couples spun elegantly, a blur of silk and perfume.
On the surface, it must have looked like a fairy tale, the powerful executive and his young, blushing protégé lost in a waltz.
As the music swelled, Alex pulled me a fraction closer. The scent of his cologne was expensive, clean, and entirely overwhelming.
“Noah,” he murmured, his voice serious now, devoid of the earlier playfulness. “I know I’ve said things before… about how I feel. But tonight, seeing you like this…”
I swallowed hard, my heart skipping a beat for all the wrong reasons.
“I want something real with you,” Alex continued, his gaze searching mine. “Not just a work arrangement. Not just… whatever this ’liaison’ title is. I want you to stay with me. Be with me. Properly.”
It was a proposition of a life I had never dreamed of, luxury, protection, and a man who seemingly adored me. He looked vulnerable, his eyes soft under the chandeliers. Anyone else would have found it breathtaking. It was the perfect romantic tableau, the kind of moment movies are made of.
But as Alex spoke of a “real” future, I realized I was barely hearing him.
My eyes were scanning the edges of the ballroom, looking for a flash of dark hair or a sharp, pinstriped suit. Where was Cassian? Why hadn’t he come back? That man, The man, he had looked like a ghost of something dangerous.
