Chapter 155: Separation
Chapter 155: Separation
NOAH
The elevator ride down was silent. I stood close to Cassian… closer than professional decorum usually allowed.
I could feel the heat radiating from his body, a solid, grounding presence in the moving metal box.
Two security guards stood in front of us, their backs like stone walls. I noticed the way Cassian subtly shifted his weight, positioning himself so that he was a physical barrier between me and the elevator doors. He was shielding me, even here, in a five-star hotel.
When the doors opened into the lobby, the atmosphere shifted. The lighting was dim, designed for ambiance, but it felt oppressive.
I kept my head down, ignoring the bows and the polite “Good evening, Mr. Wolfe” from the staff. I didn’t want their politeness. I just wanted the sky.
We stepped out of the hotel into the cool night air. Two identical black SUVs were idling at the curb, their engines a low, predatory hum. Their windows were so dark they looked like voids in the streetlights. Security detail stood like statues beside the doors.
I expected us to climb into the back of the first car together, to disappear into the leather interior and not speak until we reached the tarmac. But as we reached the lead vehicle, Cassian’s hand settled on the small of my back. It was a light touch, but it felt like a brand through my shirt.
He guided me to the rear door, which a driver held open.
“Get in,” Cassian murmured.
I hesitated, looking from the open door back to him. My heart gave a nervous little lurch. “You’re… you’re not coming?”
The panic was immediate, a cold spike in my chest. After everything that had happened, the idea of being separated from him felt like being cast adrift in a storm.
Cassian bent down, leaning one arm on the frame of the car door so his face was level with mine. The yellow glow of the streetlights caught the sharp angles of his features, highlighting the bruise on his jaw that was only just beginning to fade.
“I need to take care of something,” he said. His voice was calm, but there was an underlying hardness to it that told me this wasn’t a request. “Quickly. I’ll meet you at the airport.”
I shook my head, my hands clenching into fists at my sides. “What thing? Can’t it wait? We’re leaving tonight, Cassian. Just… just…”
“It can’t wait,” he said, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made it hard to breathe. “But I’ll be fast. I promise. An hour. Maybe less. The pilot won’t leave without me, and I won’t leave without you.”
I looked away, trying to swallow the lump in my throat. I felt like a child, terrified of the dark, but the trauma was still too fresh.
I didn’t want to be in a car without him. I didn’t want to be anywhere without the man who had pulled me out of the wreckage.
Cassian’s voice softened, dropping to a tone that was for me and me alone. “The ride is safe, Noah. Look at the cars.” He gestured to the SUVs flanking us.
“You’ll be surrounded by my best men. They’ve been told that if so much as a pebble hits this window, I’ll have their heads. You won’t be alone. I promise.”
I swallowed hard, the fear warring with the absolute trust I had in his word. If Cassian said I was safe, I was safe. He hadn’t failed me yet.
“Okay,” I whispered. “Just… don’t be long.”
For a fleeting second, Cassian reached out. His fingers hovered near my cheek, a ghost of a gesture as if he intended to cup my face or brush away a stray hair.
My heart hammered against my ribs, aching for the contact. But at the last moment, he pulled back, his hand dropping to the door handle. I felt a pang of profound disappointment. I wanted the touch. I needed the reminder that I was real to him.
“Go,” he said softly.
I slid into the backseat, the leather cool against my legs. Somehow I still expected him to follow, but he stepped back and shut the door with a solid thud. Through the tinted glass, I watched him tap the roof of the car… a signal to the driver.
The SUV began to move. I scrambled to the rear window, looking back as the hotel faded into the distance. Cassian was still standing on the sidewalk, a tall, dark silhouette against the glitter of the lobby lights. He didn’t move until the car turned the corner, and then he was gone.
The drive through the city was a strange, sensory experience. The driver was a silent professional, his eyes constantly moving between the mirrors. Ahead of us, the lead security car cleared a path; behind us, another followed like a shadow. I was in a moving fortress.
I leaned my head against the window, watching Barcelona stream past. Night had fully fallen, and the city was a kaleidoscope of neon and gold. Streetlights blurred into long ribbons of light, and the towering architecture of the Gothic Quarter looked like something out of a dream. It was beautiful… terrifyingly beautiful.
I watched people on the sidewalks, couples holding hands, tourists laughing over tapas, locals rushing home. They were living their lives, untouched by the darkness that had nearly swallowed mine. For a moment, I felt a pang of envy, but then a new thought took hold.
I am leaving.
I wasn’t going to let the fear ruin this view. I was safe. I was in a car owned by the most powerful man I knew, and I was going home. I looked at the glittering lights and forced myself to see the beauty instead of the danger. I was still alive. My heart was still beating. I had survived Alex Hendrix, and I had survived the drugs.
As the city lights began to thin out and the signs for the airport appeared, I realized that I was going back to my old life… the schedules, the emails, the demanding coffee orders. But something had fundamentally shifted. I didn’t just want my life back.
I wanted Cassian to stay in it. Not just as a boss, not just as a protector, but as the man who held me when the world went dark.
Tonight, the city was beautiful, but it was the man I’d left on the sidewalk who felt like the only destination that mattered.
