Chapter 149: Inside Memories (II)
Yuki’s body tensed up as she heard the voice of the door opening… she hadn’t noticed the door before but her tension eased slightly as she saw who entered.
It was just a maid.
Yuki shook her head and once again looked at her mother who looked very pleased.
Without her noticing a single cold tear rolled down Yuki’s cheeks, betraying emotions she couldn’t fully process.
It was all very foreign and new to her. Yuki as a child had always seen her mother from afar and on a life supporting machine which kept her alive.
In her eyes she was a old, frail woman. Even when she came to Aethelburg, she found her father and her mother as well.
She was very happy… for the first time in her life she talked to her mother, but turns out her mother didn’t even knew anything about Yuki. Well that was to be expected.
The problem was that her brother, Renji had been acting strange ever since. And recently he had turned too cold, he turned into a monster who murdered his own mother.
Then he went out of his way to capture Yuki into this never ending cycle of Illusions… but there was a significant difference in all the previous ones and this illusion.
Somehow… it felt like a memory.
Yuki wiped her eyes and stared at the lady that looked like a goddess incarnate.
’She looks… happy,’ Yuki thought, staring at her mother’s smiling face.
She felt very envious of her brother… he always had her by his side. On the other hand… Yuki had never even talked to her.
She never had a chance to show her talents to her mother and make her happy… her father was never the kind to give her much attention and Renji has always been a little cold towards her.
Yuki’s eyes got lost and looked down when a wild thought… that was perhaps true, came to her mind.
’Maybe…he hates me.’ she thought with a heavy heart. ’After all I was the one who took his mother away from him.’
Maybe… he jut wanted to see Yuki suffer. That’s why he killed their mother in front of her. So that she could feel what he felt?
Yuki was not born as a normal child… her genes were heavily modified and because of the surgery during child birth, her mother had entered comma and never woke up after that.
And eventually the world as they knew fell.
She let out a slow breath and looked up once again. This was just an illusion… an illusion created by her brother’s skill.
The ability to trap someone in visions so convincing that they couldn’t tell truth from fiction… it is a dangerous ability.
’He’s showing me this for a reason,’ Yuki thought bitterly.
She calmed herself through sheer force of will, falling back on years of training in maintaining composure. Her expression smoothed once again.
The maid walked past Yuki, completely unaware of her presence, because of course she was… and approached the bed. She moved with practiced efficiency, holding out the tray.
“Please take your medicines, my Lady,” the maid said politely, her voice carrying the formal tone of a longtime servant.
Yuki’s mother turned slowly from the window.
She was still smiling and radiating that gentle happiness from watching her son’s success. Her movements were graceful and unhurried.
And then she faced them directly.
Yuki’s eyes widened with shock so profound that her entire body went rigid.
Her mother’s eyes…
They were completely blank.
Empty white orbs that stared forward without seeing. Without focusing on anything.
Her mother was blind.
“This…” Yuki whispered, her voice breaking. “This can’t be…”
How could this be?
But it was true. She could see it now—the way her mother’s head tilted slightly to listen and her hands moved carefully, feeling for the tray rather than reaching for it directly.
Then the maid guided the glass to her hand with gentle precision, the kind of assistance someone gives to a person who cannot see.
’Mother was blind?’ Yuki’s thoughts spiraled. ’But… Why didn’t i know?’
Yuki’s eyes widened as a horrific calculation ran through her mind. If her mother was blind… then who was the one in Aethelburg?
From the looks of it… this was more than just an illusion. It was most probably a memory of her brother.
’No… this is just an illusion. If this is actually a memory then it is from before i was born. Mom had always been blind?’
Yuki clenched her head in frustration… she was more confused than she had ever been in her entire life. What to believe and what not?
Was the old lady whom she met in Aethelburg, who could see everything was her mother? Or was this blind lady here her mother?
Suddenly she was brought back to reality by violent coughing of the pale lady… Yuki instantly looked up and found that her mother was coughing up blood after drinking the meds.
This illusion too was ending just like all others had ended… so, maybe… maybe it was fake.
Just as she was about to disregard as a trick from her brother a voice startled her from behind.
“This is the truth… you little fool.”
The hair of Yuki’s hand stood to end… and a shiver ran down her whole body as she turned around and jumped back.
Just behind her… there stood a tall person, wearing a black hooded cloak which covered his entire face in shadows.
The scene around them changed once again and now they both were standing in a baseball field.
“Bro… brother?” Yuki asked panting.
The figure in front of her slowly raised his hands and removed the hood revealing his handsome features adorned with long pink hair.
“Yes… its me…” Renji said flatly, his voice was devoid of any emotion. “And what you just saw was the truth.”
“But… how could that be?” Yuki asked back, gritting her teeth. “If that was your truth, then who was the lady in Aethelburg?”
Renji didn’t answer… he simply turned around and looked at the small boy of around 6 or 7 running on the pitch.
This field was inside a protective area and there were only four other servants of the clan playing with the kid. While his mother, who was wearing a pretty purple gown was listening to him play and clap from the sidelines.
“Mother had always been blind…” Renji said with a sigh. “I do not have time to deal with you… just understand what you can from this.”
“At least tell me why did you – ” Yuki snapped back, but her voice was cut short as the scene before he changed once again.
Everything went completely black and then she slowly opened her eyes staring at the ceiling of some unknown house.
He head was hurting very badly as she tried to look around. She realized that she was no longer in an illusion and awake.
Suddenly… the earth shuddered as the noise of a blast echoed from somewhere far away.
Yuki was almost knocked out of the bed she was lying on.
Another tremor followed and with it came a myriad of screams and sounds of something heavy falling.
“What the hell is happening?”
