“What’s this?” It was not a single god or goddess; the aura was too strong. It felt more like a group of them.

“Why are they here?” Katerina said, her face turned serious all of a sudden as she gazed in a certain direction.

“Who?” I asked, my eyes following her gaze. Then saw them.

They came from the far end of the plaza.

Nine of them. Cloaked in black. Tall, faceless, thin, and wrong. Their forms seemed to bleed into the air itself, like shadows that refused to belong to any one body.

The rattling of chains echoed, yet no chains were visible. The sound wasn’t carried by the air—it crawled up the spine, gnawed at the soul. My crimson aura hissed, flaring instinctively like a beast baring fangs at something older, hungrier.

And behind them… the fog.

A thick, choking whiteness rolled across the stones as if the city itself exhaled its last breath.
