The thought clawed at him. She hadn’t stumbled here by accident. No—she had planned it. Allowed him to capture the northern nodes, sacrificed her own future resources to paint false trails, killing his scouts in the west. She had fed him a lie, and like a fool, he had believed it.

Mars’ grip on his spear tightened until the wood creaked. His golden barrier shimmered around the camp, holding back the tide of shadows for now. But it would not last. He could already feel the strain gnawing at his divine essence, every second bleeding strength.

This is the first time in ages that he had a worthy opponent. Someone clever, someone skilled, someone with vision, someone cunning. Someone who wasn’t as boring as the other gods.

A cruel smile tugged at the corner of Mars’ mouth, even as the ground shook from the pounding of his soldiers’ boots. His eyes burned like twin embers beneath the iron crest of his helmet.

He spun on his heel and barked orders, the first company thundering out of the camp gates like a tide of steel. Their shields glinted, their discipline holding strong despite the whispers of terror that still clung to the air.

Mars watched them go, his eyes narrowing at the crimson mist that lingered where Morgana’s swarm had been. The moment the first company disappeared in the tree line.

Morgana attacked again.

The night split open with a rush of wings. Four shadowy forms plunged from the sky like spears of darkness, their descent so fast the torches guttered and went out.

The soldiers barely had time to scream before the first vampire landed in their midst, claws raking through bronze and flesh as though both were paper. The others quickly retreated after claiming one or two soldiers each.

“Fuck!!” Mars cursed, his roar shaking the tents as he spun, golden sparks bleeding from the tip of his spear. His teeth ground together, jaw tight with fury. The scent of blood was thick in the air, mingling with the smoke of shattered torches. His ears rang with the echoes of men screaming, then falling silent as their lifeblood was drained.

The camp was unraveling. Every time his legion tried to march, the shadows descended, ripping holes in their formations, then vanishing again before he could strike them down. It wasn’t war—it was slaughter, and Morgana was the conductor of this grim symphony.

He was forced to use his golden barrier again just to keep the vampires away. For now, Mars was the only one who could kill them; his men were human with no magical power or skills to face the dark monsters.
