- Chapter 290: Evacuation Plan (8) - Sneaking in as Gardeners
When Nathan heard what William had in mind, he was shocked.
“Are you saying we must enter the castle to get that man? Isn’t that suicide?” Nathan said.
The high-ranking spy who was after Nathan was someone who lived in the city’s castle. That was where the current rulers of the city were.
This spy was actually a counselor of the current rulers. William wanted to go after him. He was the head of the operation.
If he died, then the rest of the spies would be lost on what to do, and that would give them enough time to leave on the following day and get away from the city.
But the only problem was how to kill the counselor. He was inside the castle, a place with a high security, and it wasn’t easy to get in.
In fact, Nathan was afraid to go there because of his identity.
“The guards in the front of the castle will know my face,” Nathan said. “There’s no way we can go there. Your plan won’t work.”
“It’s dark, and if we change your clothes, get you some accessories, then the guards of the castle won’t know your face. Look, there are many guards in this city, they won’t recognize you,” William said.
William could go in the castle alone to deal with the counselor. It was not like he needed Nathan’s help to kill that man. But he couldn’t let Nathan alone.
Kier was also with them, and he could protect Nathan if needed, but William still didn’t trust him full enough to give him such an important mission. Nathan was a key part of their evacuation plan. He had to live.
So, William’s plan involved Nathan going with him, but not doing much. He would be close, maybe distracting a few guards at most, but William would be the one to take care of everything.
Nathan was still afraid. The whole thing was way too risky. But after thinking about it for a few minutes, he nodded.
“Alright. If that’s the only way to get this man out of our path, then let’s do it,” Nathan said.
“Good,” William replied.
They first had to acquire a different identity to enter the castle. William, Nathan, and Kier moved closer to the castle and paid close attention to the things that were happening.
It should’ve been a difficult task, but William’s luck was quite good that day. He spotted four people wearing gardener outfits, and they were talking to each other.
“We are arriving so late for our job in the castle. Will they get pissed?” one of them said.
“No, of course not. Apparently their garden is currently pretty bad, so we are like their saviors. But let’s not waste any more time.”
Those gardeners were going to the castle, and that was just too much of a coincidence.
William, Nathan, and Kier exchanged glances when they heard them.
“Let’s go,” William said.
The difference in power between them was just too grand. They waited by one of the alleys, and when the gardeners passed next to them, they knocked them out cold.
Then, they stole their clothes and tools. William decided to tie them up somewhere, just in case they woke up sooner than expected.
Nathan had a hat alongside his gardener attire, making it much harder to see his face.
“There’s no way they will recognize you, so don’t worry,” William said.
Even Kier said the same thing. “He’s right. You don’t look like you at all.”
With the identity problem out of the way, all they had to do was go to the castle.
The castle wasn’t as big as the other castles William had seen lately. But it was still quite large compared to the ‘normal’ buildings of the city.
There were two guards at the main gate, and many more patrolling the wall around the castle.
William was the one leading the way. Nathan wanted to stay quiet and avoid drawing attention.
“So you’re finally here,” the guard said when he spotted William and the others. “Where’s the last one of you? Wasn’t it supposed to be four?”
William smiled. “Yes, but the last one of our group is really sick and couldn’t come. Don’t worry, we can do the job with just the three of us.”
“Alright, go in.”
It was that easy. The trio entered the castle. Someone came to speak with them — another guard.
“I’ll show you where you’ll sleep. The job starts tomorrow. There’s no reason to take care of the garden this late.”
Taking care of the garden meant making noise. The rulers of the city and all the important figures living in the castle wanted a silent night. So, it was best to start the job the following morning.
The place they would be sleeping in was a cabin at the back of the castle. It was covered with vegetation — basically a cabin tucked in the corner of the garden, but that area wasn’t one people typically went to.
“I know it isn’t the comfiest of places, but I assure you the payment for the job will be worth it,” the guard said, then added, “if you’ll excuse me.”
The cabin, in William’s eyes, was perfect. There were no guards or people constantly walking near their location. They were all alone, and that was the best scenario possible to come up with a plan.
They had to kill the counselor tonight. It was a short time to prepare everything, but the counselor certainly didn’t think they would sneak into the castle to kill him — and that was their greatest trump card.
“From the things I saw in Alderon’s memory, the counselor usually hangs in the library. He even has a room there,” William said.
The only problem was that he couldn’t quite recall where the library was. The castle was a big place. Looking for the library would certainly make them draw attention, and that was bad.
But to his surprise, Nathan knew where the library was!
“I worked here a few times to cover the guards who got sick,” Nathan said. “The library is on the third floor of the castle.”
“Third floor? Great,” William said.
The most crowded floor was usually the first one. That was where most of the low-rank staff members slept. The higher floors were reserved for people with higher rankings and for specific rooms.
William was currently next to an area with low security. He could easily climb the wall and sneak in through one of the windows to reach the third floor. That would cost him less than thirty seconds.
“Are we climbing?” Nathan asked. “Won’t this draw too much attention?”
Nathan simply didn’t understand William’s power. He smiled and said, “I’ll go first to open the window for us.”
They went outside their cabin. William spotted a window that looked defenseless. There were no people inside the castle in that area. So, he ran toward it.
In less than three seconds, he was already up there after a powerful jump, and he opened the window.
Then, he decided to jump back. The guards wouldn’t reach them in time. He had heard their footsteps from afar.
So, William wanted to go in. He went down, grabbed Nathan, and climbed again. Kier followed closely behind. When the trio was up there on the third floor, they closed the window again.
When the guard patrolling that area arrived, the window was already closed — not that he even looked up — and the lights in the cabin were up too, so the guard just kept moving.
The corridor they found themselves in was dark. William gestured for Nathan to help them locate themselves in that place. He was the only one who went there personally.
William, with his heightened senses, could hear the footsteps of people coming from far away. Because of that, they easily avoided all the guards and the employees who were walking through the corridors during the night.
It took them more time to reach their destination while having to hide and wait, but at least things were going smoothly for them. Even if it took a while, the important thing was to complete the mission.
They didn’t know, but someone came by their cabin.
“Hello,” the guard said, “I need to talk to you about your job tomorrow. Important stuff.”
The guard stood in front of the cabin, yet no one answered. The lights were still on.
Just in case, the guard unsheathed his sword, and then he said, “I’m going in.”
The guard gently opened the door, and to his surprise, there was no one inside.
“What the actual fuck?” he said.
He left and met the other guards that were patrolling that area. He talked to them to see if they had seen where the gardeners went.
“No, sir. I didn’t see anyone outside. But their lights are on, so they must be there, right?”
“No, you idiot. There’s no one inside! Go find them, now!”
William, Nathan and Kier found the library. They didn’t know, but the guards of the castle were trying to find them too.
