After the elevator chimed open on the 10th floor, Charlotte stepped out, her boots clicking softly against the marble floor. The corridor here was minimalistic but elegant, with crystalline sconces glowing faintly on the walls.

She walked with purpose toward a section of the wall that looked perfectly seamless—no handle, no visible frame.

Before she could say a word, the wall-like door whooshed open with a soft mechanical sigh.

A familiar voice greeted her, laced with amusement.

“Your Highness, I’m eternally grateful that you’ve graced this humble commoner’s home.”

Standing on the other side was Alex Dragonheart—silver-haired, blue-eyed, and infuriatingly smug as always. He wore a simple dark tee and loose pants, but somehow still looked like he’d walked out of a noble fashion magazine.

Charlotte’s mouth twitched.

She walked inside with crossed arms.

“You seem very excited to see me. Have you finally started to appreciate the absolute beauty standing in front of you?”

Alex raised a brow and looked around dramatically, pretending to scan the room.

“Which beauty? I don’t see one.”

Then he gave a casual shrug.

“Well—except myself, of course.”

Charlotte stopped mid-step and turned to glare at him, lips twitching in restrained annoyance.

“Looks like you’re not happy to see me. I guess I’ll take my leave, then.”

She turned theatrically toward the door, only for Alex to step in front of her, arms spread.

“Now, now. Of course you’re a beauty. I was just joking around.”

He leaned forward slightly with that familiar, maddening grin.

“Sure, you’ll never match my greatness… but yes, you’re definitely a beauty too.”

Charlotte smirked, flipping her white hair over her shoulder.

“You can never undermine yourself, can you?”

“Char, that can never happen—at least not in this lifetime.”

Charlotte chuckled, a rare sound that softened her features.

“Yeah, I can imagine that.”

Then, with a more serious tone, she added,

“Alright, enough playing around. Let’s talk about the important things. You need to know what’s coming.”

Alex motioned toward the plush couch.

“I’m listening. Speak.”

They both sat down, Charlotte with her arms crossed, Alex leaning back with one leg over the other.

“Ethan’s going to challenge you for the Apex title,” Charlotte said bluntly. “He’s probably already submitted the duel request to the Student Council.”

Alex’s brows lifted slightly.

“That’s bad.”

“You don’t sound surprised.”

Alex shrugged.

“After that expression he made during the Academy freshmen ball? I knew it was coming sooner or later.”

Charlotte leaned in slightly, eyes sharp as a hawk.

“You broke through, didn’t you?”

Alex blinked.

“So you noticed.”

Charlotte gave a slight, proud smirk.

“Ever since I was a child, I’ve been highly sensitive to mana. Even a slight change in your presence is enough for me to pick it up.”

Alex nodded.

“Well, I broke through just before you arrived.”

Charlotte’s smirk deepened.

“Not enough.”

She leaned back.

“Ethan’s going to wipe the floor with you. He was already stronger than you before… and now he’s awakened. Your chances of winning are next to zero.”

Alex’s mouth twitched.

“Thanks for the motivation, Char. You’re really a good friend.”

Charlotte, voice dripping with sarcasm, added,

She placed it gently on the table.

“Beautiful accessory. Where’d you get it?”

Charlotte’s eyes softened slightly.

“My mother gave it to me. It also functions as a storage device.”

She tapped the phoenix gem, and a shimmer of red light spilled forth as she pulled out a vial—a crimson potion swirling with an unnatural glow, like molten ruby laced with lightning.

Alex’s eyes lit up with a glint of mischief.

“The Awakening Nectar.”

Charlotte gave a small smile.

“Damn right it is.”

Alex reached forward casually to take it—but just as his fingers neared the vial, Charlotte pulled her hand back.

“Ah, ah.”

She held the vial up.

“Before I give this to you, you have to answer one question.”

Alex paused, intrigued.

“Alright, Your Highness. Ask away.”

Charlotte’s eyes gleamed as she slowly spoke.

“I asked Ethan this once before. He gave the most suitable answer I’ve heard. One that was… correct. Now I want to see if you can answer it too.”

Alex leaned back with a smirk, folding his arms.

“I’m intrigued. Hit me with it.”

Charlotte’s expression turned serious as she looked Alex straight in the eyes.

“If on one hand, the lives of millions of people were at stake… and on the other, your friend’s life—just one life—was at risk, who would you choose?”

Alex blinked, genuinely baffled by the question.

“Do I really need to answer something like that? I mean, it’s this easy and obvious?”

Charlotte nodded firmly.

“Yes. I asked the same question to Ethan once. I want your answer too.”

Alex sighed, leaning back.

“The answer’s obvious… the people.”

Charlotte’s expression hardened ever so slightly.

But Alex wasn’t done.

Charlotte’s eyes widened in shock.

“Of course I’d choose the idiot friend of mine—whoever the hell got himself caught up in that stupid situation.

Why should I sacrifice someone I know and care about for a bunch of strangers? Let the millions figure it out themselves. That dumb friend’s getting saved, no question.”

Her baffled look slowly turned into one of stunned disbelief.

Then, suddenly, laughter erupted from Charlotte—loud, uncontrolled laughter echoing through the apartment. She held her stomach, trying to stop but failing miserably.

Alex blinked.

“Your Highness, are you okay? Should I call a doctor for you or an exorcist?”

Charlotte wiped a tear from the corner of her eye, still chuckling.

Charlotte looked at him still chuckling and asked.

“You’d really doom millions for one friend?”

Alex looked her in the eye.

“If that one friend is someone I care about?” he said. “Then yeah. Every time.”

She studied him, silent for a moment. Then, softly, almost as a whisper:

“Talking is easy, Alex. But… would you really do that—if a situation like that actually came?”

Alex didn’t flinch. He didn’t laugh or smirk this time.

He simply shrugged and said, “Guess we’ll find out… if a situation like that ever comes in the future.”

Charlotte’s lips parted slightly. The weight of his answer wasn’t boastful or arrogant—it was honest. Uncertain. Real.

And for some reason… she believed him.

“You’re really… one of a kind, aren’t you?”

Alex crossed his arms smugly.

“Well, I do take pride in being the most glorious one in the world—no, the universe.”

Charlotte laughed again, though this time softer.

“Indeed you do.”

Her expression gradually turned serious again as she leaned forward and placed the shimmering red potion on the table.

“Let me warn you, Alex. Only use this if you’re sure you have a bloodline to awaken. If not… it could kill you. Or worse, leave you permanently disabled.”

Alex gave her a lopsided smile.

“Thanks for worrying, Char. But I don’t take challenges I’m not sure I can win.”

Charlotte rolled her eyes.

“Suit yourself. Just… don’t die and end up becoming a ghost. I don’t want to be haunted because I handed you that potion.”

Alex grinned.

“Noted. And if I do die, you’ll be the first one I haunt—I’ll rattle chains around your royal bedchamber at 3 a.m. sharp.”

He added with a teasing grin,

“And make sure to peek at you when you’re taking a shower.”

Charlotte’s face flushed and she smacked his head.

Wincing in pain, Alex muttered,

“Hey, relax, relax—I was just joking. I never peek at ordi—beautiful people.”

“You’re impossible.”

“And I’m proud of it.”

She let out a sigh.

“Alden’s not going to like the fact that you’re stronger than him now.”

Alex’s grin turned wicked.

“Which is why I’ll make sure to rub it in his pretty little face every chance I get.”

“You’re really impossible.”

“Of course I am.”

Just then, Charlotte’s EtherPad lit up. She glanced down and frowned.

“It’s Seraphina.”

She accepted the call and put it on speaker.

“Yes, Sera? What happened?”

A few seconds passed before Charlotte suddenly shot up, her voice rising.

“What?! Why did he do that?!”

Her expression turned urgent.

“Okay, okay—I’m coming. Just wait.”

Alex watched her curiously.

“What happened? Everything alright?”

Charlotte looked at him, her face serious.

“A fight broke out with Ethan. Against multiple upperclassmen.”
