Chapter 124: Mind Reading
Damien’s eyes were dark with a mix of shame and fury. He paced the floor, his face still glistening with sweat. Every time he looked at the bed where Sofia lay, his heart twisted.
”What is going on between you and Sofia?” Damien asked, curious. “You guys aren’t on good terms?”
Alaric didn’t look away. He pulled his shirt over his broad shoulders, his face etched with a frown. “Yes. There is an issue,” he admitted, his voice rasping. “An issue I will fix.”
”Uncle, let her go!” Damien stepped into Alaric’s space, his fists clenched. “She is my mate. I know I messed up before. I know I was cruel. But I love her. I really love her, Alaric. And I know what you’re doing. You’re looking for a ghost. But she is not Elizabeth.”
The air in the room turned freezing. At the mention of Elizabeth, Alaric’s eyes flashed with a lethal green light. He grabbed the collar of Damien’s shirt, pulling his nephew close until their noses nearly touched.
”I never said she was Elizabeth,” Alaric hissed, his voice trembling with a rare emotion. “I know exactly who she is. I love Sofia because she is Sofia. I love her spirit, her scent, and the way she fights back. Do not tell me who I can love, Damien.”
Damien stared at him, shocked. He had never heard his uncle admit to loving anyone since the tragedy of his past. He shoved Alaric’s hands away and barked out a bitter, nervous laugh.
”So what now? You want to be with your nephew’s mate?” Damien threw his hands up, looking around the room as the reality of the night finally hit him. “Uncle, do you realize what we just did? We slept with one woman. Together. An uncle and a nephew just had a threesome with the same girl. This is madness! If the Council hears of this, they will mock us.”
Alaric looked back at the bed. Sofia was still deep in her healing sleep, looking like an angel under the silk sheets.
”The Council doesn’t matter,” Alaric said firmly. “Her wolf has chosen. She didn’t push me away, and she didn’t push you away. She took us.”
”Bullshit!” Damien spat, glaring at Alaric. “Let her go, Alaric… I don’t want things to get messy between us.”
Alaric opened his mouth to reply, his jaw tight, but a low groan from the bed silenced them both. The two Alphas froze, their heads snapping toward Sofia as she stirred under the silk sheets.
Sofia’s head throbbed as her eyes fluttered open. The room felt heavy, smelling of sex, power, and the sharp scent of pine and oak. As her vision cleared, the memories hit her like a physical blow. The heat. The White Wolf. The way she had demanded both Alaric and Damien. The way she had taken them both at the same time.
A hot wave of shame washed over her. Did I really just do that? she thought, pulling the blanket tighter against her naked body. I slept with an uncle and his nephew. What is wrong with me?
”Should I step forward?”
Sofia blinked. She looked at Alaric. He was standing perfectly still, his green eyes fixed on her, but his lips hadn’t moved.
”Will she send me away? Does she hate me for being here with him?”
Now she looked at Damien. He looked worried, his hands stuffed into his pockets, but again—his mouth was closed.
Sofia frowned, her heart beginning to race. “Did… did you guys say something?” she asked, her voice raspy from screaming earlier.
Both men shook their heads.
”No, Sofia,” Alaric said out loud, his voice deep.
”Shit, she is angry. I can see it in her eyes. She’s going to kick me out.”
Sofia’s eyes went wide. She heard it clearly. The voice was Alaric’s, but his lips were still shut. It was like his voice was echoing directly inside her brain.
”She must be hungover. She must be regretting it. She’s looking at Alaric like he’s a monster… or maybe I’m the monster.”
This time it was Damien’s voice. It was softer, filled with the pain of a mate who felt he was losing his chance.
Sofia sat up slowly, clutching the blanket to her chest. She looked from Alaric’s stoic face to Damien’s worried one. She realized with a jolt of shock that she wasn’t just hearing them—she was hearing their deepest, private thoughts.
The power of the White Wolf hadn’t just ended her heat; it had opened a door into their minds. She could read their minds!!!
Damien stepped closer to the bed, his face etched with concern. “Sofia? Are you okay? You’re staring at us like you’ve seen a ghost.”
Sofia didn’t respond. She sat frozen, the blanket clutched to her chest. Her mind was racing. Is this real? Am I going crazy? She looked at Damien, then at Alaric, trying to understand how their voices were echoing in her head while their mouths remained shut.
Alaric moved to the other side of the bed, his voice low and filled with concern. “Sofia, do you need water? You’ve been through a lot. Your body needs to recover.”
Again, Sofia remained silent. She couldn’t find the words. If she spoke, she might scream. If she told them what was happening, they would know she was deep inside their heads, seeing the parts of them they tried to hide. She decided right then—she would keep this secret. She wouldn’t tell them she could read their minds.
The room fell into a heavy silence, but for Sofia, it was anything but quiet.
”She’s so pale,” Alaric’s thought drifted through her mind, sounding more vulnerable than he ever did out loud. “I want to hold her, but I’m afraid I’ll scare her away after what happened. I’ve waited so long for a woman like her… I can’t lose her now.”
Sofia felt a pang in her heart. Alaric, the cold and powerful Alpha, was terrified of her rejection.
Then, Damien’s thoughts surged forward, chaotic and loud. “Please look at me, Sofia. Don’t just look at him. I know I was a fool before, but the bond… I feel it pulling me toward you so hard it hurts. I love you so much it scares me. I’d fight the whole world—and my uncle—just to keep you.”
Sofia looked down at her lap, her fingers trembling. The room was filled with their unspoken love and their shared worry.
”Does she remember the way she looked at me?” Alaric wondered silently. “The way her wolf called to mine? It was perfect. I hope she doesn’t think it was just the heat. It was real for me.”
”I’ll do anything,” Damien thought, his mental voice desperate. “I’ll change. I’ll be the man she needs. I just need her to say something. Anything.”
The weight of their feelings was overwhelming. They both loved her, and they were both terrified that the night they just shared would be the only one they ever had.
Sofia kept her eyes down, her heart aching from the raw honesty of their thoughts. She wasn’t just the woman they wanted; she was the center of their entire world.
”I… I just need to rest,” Sofia finally whispered, her voice barely audible. “Please. Just let me be for a moment.”
