Chapter 130: A Spy
”So easy,” Bella thought, a thought Sofia couldn’t hear. “The White Wolf is as soft as the legends say. The Rogue King was right. I’m already inside the fortress.”
They reached the apartment, and Sofia pushed the door open. The space felt warm, spacious, and quiet. Sofia went to the kitchen to get some water, leaving Bella in the living room.
”Make yourself at home,” Sofia called out. “There’s a spare room down the hall. You can take a shower and I’ll find you some clean clothes.”
Bella stood in the middle of the room, her eyes scanning the locks on the door and the layout of the windows. She reached into her pocket and felt the small, hidden voice device the Rogue King had given her so he could hear their conversations.
”Thank you, ma’am,” Bella said aloud, her voice sounding sweet and innocent again. “You have no idea how much this means to me.”
Sofia responded back loudly, saying, “My name is Sofia… please call me Sofia.”
Sofia came back into the living room carrying a tray with cold water, juice, and a few snacks. She set them down on the coffee table with a kind smile.
”Here, you must be starving,” Sofia said.
Bella took a sip of the juice and looked around the room, her eyes wide with fake wonder. “Thank you so much. You seem so rich, Sofia. Look at this apartment! The interior, the space… this place must cost a fortune every month. What do you do for a living?”
Sofia felt a bit awkward. She thought about Alaric and how he had provided everything for her. “I don’t do anything for now,” she said softly. “This apartment was a gift from a friend.”
”A gift?” Bella thought, her mind spinning. “Who is this friend? An Alpha? I need to find out who is protecting her.”
But aloud, Bella just sighed and looked at her lap. “You are so lucky,” she whispered. “I wish I had friends like that. All my life, I have been an outcast. My own family didn’t want me.”
Sofia sat closer, her heart breaking for the girl.
”I had a mate once,” Bella continued, her voice trembling as she told her lie. “I thought he would be my hero. But he rejected me. He said I didn’t fit the ’perfect description’ of what his mate should be. To him, I was shameful. He wanted someone thin, someone beautiful, someone powerful. He treated me like I was nothing but a mistake.”
Sofia felt a lump in her throat. Every word Bella said felt like a needle in her heart. It was almost exactly what Sofia had felt for years—the rejection, the feeling of being “not enough,” the shame of her own body.
”He told me nobody could ever love someone like me,” Bella sobbed, covering her face with her hands. “He made me feel like I was trash just because I wasn’t perfect.”
Tears began to blur Sofia’s vision. She reached out and hugged Bella tightly. “I know,” Sofia whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “I know exactly how that feels. But he was wrong, Bella. You are not trash.”
Over Sofia’s shoulder, Bella’s crying stopped instantly. Her face stayed calm and cold, even while her body pretended to shake with sobs. She had Sofia exactly where she wanted her: trapped in a bond of pity.
”She’s crying,” Bella thought with a dark smirk. “She’s even weaker than I thought. A few more stories and she will tell me every secret she has.”
Sofia wiped her eyes and stood up, reaching for Bella’s hand. “Come, let me show you to your room. You need to rest.”
She led Bella down the hallway to the guest suite. It was spacious, with all the required furniture. “There are fresh towels in the bathroom,” Sofia said kindly. “Sleep as long as you need.”
”Thank you, Sofia,” Bella whispered, putting on her best act of a grateful, broken girl. “You’re an angel.”
The moment the door clicked shut, the tears on Bella’s face vanished. She didn’t look tired at all. She walked straight to the window, checking the height from the ground, then reached into her pocket to touch the small device.
She didn’t need the device to speak to her leader, though. She closed her eyes and opened a private Mind Link.
”Honey, I’m in,” she pulsed across the link. “The fortress has been breached.”
Miles away, at the rogue camp, the Rogue King leaned back in his chair, a dark, satisfied chuckle vibrating in his chest. “Yes, baby, I heard everything through the device. Your acting was excellent. You had her weeping for you in minutes.”
Bella smirked, leaning against the ceiling-to-floor glass window. “She is so pathetic. She actually thinks we are the same. She has all this power, and she’s using it to cry over a stranger’s fake sad story.”
”Keep telling her pitiful stories,” the Rogue King urged. “It makes her distracted and gives her more pity for you. Tomorrow, I will send someone the drop-off point near the building. He will have the substance. It is a powerful sedative mixed with wolfsbane. Once you put it in her food and she eats it, she will go unconscious and weak. Her White Wolf won’t be able to protect her then. That is when we move in and capture her.”
Bella felt a surge of excitement. “I’ll make sure she eats every last bit of it. I can’t wait to see the look on her face when she realizes her ’new friend’ is the one handing her over to you.”
”I knew I could count on you,” the King purred. “You’ve always been my most loyal weapon.”
”I love you, baby,” Bella whispered into the link. “I will do this perfectly. For us.”
”I love you too. Don’t fail me.”
The link snapped shut. Bella looked at herself in the guest room mirror, smoothing out her hair. She wasn’t just a rogue; she was the Rogue King’s true mate, and she would do anything to help him become the most powerful man in the supernatural world.
