Chapter 89 - 88: The Path Beneath the World
Chapter 89: Chapter 88: The Path Beneath the World
The next dawn did not arrive with the gentle touch of light.
It arrived with pressure.
The air above the Inner Bastion felt heavier than it had any right to be, as if the world itself was holding its breath in anticipation of a rupture. The emerald glow on the horizon pulsed with a steady, patient rhythm like a heartbeat that refused to be ignored, radiating from a mind that had spent the night calculating the end of the human race.
Aegis stood at the edge of the departure platform, his fingers steady as he fastened the final clasp of his armor. It was not ceremonial plate, nor was it the glowing regalia of a king.
It was the same battle-worn set he had worn through a hundred skirmishes, reinforced and repaired so many times that the original metal was buried beneath layers of scarred alloy. It was armor that knew how to survive, which made it the only thing he trusted.
Bella watched him quietly, her silhouette outlined against the bruised purple of the pre-dawn sky.
She had changed as well. Gone were the flowing, academic robes of a mage; in their place was fitted combat attire layered with ice-threaded runes and living bark plates grown through carefully controlled life magic. Her white hair was braided tightly against her head, ensuring it wouldn’t become a liability in the high-gravity zones they were about to enter.
Ruina waited nearby in her humanoid form, silver scales shimmering faintly beneath her skin, her wings folded so tightly against her back they looked like a cloak of mercury.
Pyro rested at her feet, unusually still. His surface glowed with a dull, restrained heat, like a forge waiting for the bellows.
No speeches were made to the troops. No dramatic goodbyes were shared. The army had been deliberately kept away from this moment to prevent the Sovereign from sensing a shift in the camp’s emotional collective.
Only Queen Gloriana stood at a distance, her expression a mask of royal composure. When Aegis turned toward her, she did not speak; she simply inclined her head once, a silent acknowledgement of the burden he carried.
That was enough.
”Move,” Aegis said.
They departed without ceremony, slipping into the grey mist like ghosts. Ruina carried them beyond the outer perimeter first, flying low and fast, her wings barely clearing the jagged peaks to avoid drawing the eyes of the Titan sentinels. The land beneath them was a graveyard of progress. Once-liberated roads were cracked open as if by giant claws.
Former watchtowers lay shattered, their stones ground into powder by coordinated Titan advances.
”This area fell only three days ago,” Ruina whispered, her eyes scanning the wreckage for movement. “The evacuation was clean, My Lord. No survivors were left behind to be consumed by the earth.”
Aegis nodded, his eyes fixed on the horizon. “Good. If we fail, at least they have a head start.”
Bella’s gaze remained fixed ahead, her voice soft but firm. “Do not let the statistics numb you, Aegis. Efficiency does not lessen the cost of what those people lost. They left their homes, not just a coordinate on a map.”
”I know,” Aegis replied. “That’s why we’re ending this today.”
They traveled in silence after that. The closer they drew to the Sovereign’s domain, the more the world began to feel fundamentally wrong. Gravity fluctuated subtly, making their stomachs turn. Sound carried inconsistently, muffled one moment and echoing unnaturally the next.
Even the mana behaved strangely, flowing in rigid, artificial channels rather than natural currents. It was the sign of a world being overwritten by a superior will.
Pyro shifted uneasily in the satchel Ruina carried. Boink.
Aegis placed a steadying hand on the slime. “We are close. I can feel the earth screaming.”
The first Titan patrol appeared without warning. They weren’t charging or hunting; they were marching. Six Duke-rank Earth Titans moved in perfect formation across a ravine below, their steps synchronized like the ticking of a clock. Their heads turned in unison, scanning the terrain with glowing emerald eyes.
Bella frowned, her hand hovering over her staff. “They are sweeping for anomalies. They aren’t looking for a stray animal or a lone traveler.”
”No, Master. They are looking for us. The Sovereign knows the ’Existential Threat’ wouldn’t just sit behind a wall and wait to die.”
Aegis exhaled slowly, the mana around his trident beginning to hum.
“Then we proceed exactly as planned. Ruina, give them a show.”
Ruina ascended sharply, veering away from the strike team’s path. She moved in a controlled arc that deliberately exposed her silver-scaled silhouette against the sky. Within seconds, the Titans reacted. They didn’t roar in confusion; they pivoted as one. Two broke formation and hurled concentrated gravitational pulses skyward. Ruina dodged with the grace of a predator, unleashing a burst of silver flame in response—a strike that was deliberately loud, bright, and destructive.
The Titans answered the challenge, calling for reinforcements through the earth.
”Phase One,” Aegis commanded.
Pyro leaped from the satchel and expanded mid-air. The small slime’s body surged outward with terrifying speed, growing until he dwarfed the ravine itself. Flames roared along his gelatinous surface as he crashed down directly into the center of the Titan formation. The impact was catastrophic. Earth and fire exploded outward as Pyro crushed three Dukes instantly under his immense mass. The remaining Titans turned, focusing every ounce of their gravitational authority on the massive, burning intruder.
That was the diversion they needed. Aegis and Bella dropped into the ravine as Pyro engaged, slipping into the shadowed depths where the Sovereign’s influence pressed hardest against the land.
The ground beneath them was warm. No—it was pulsing.
Bella crouched, pressing her palm against the stone. “The earth here is no longer inert stone. It’s acting like muscle. It’s responding to every thought the Sovereign has.”
”Then we’re walking inside a living body,” Aegis said. “Move.”
They advanced through collapsed tunnels and jagged stone corridors that led deeper beneath the battlefield.
