Chapter 142: Territorial Markers
The iron hatch hissed shut with a mechanical finality that signaled the end of the chase and the beginning of the cull. Vane did not lean against the wall to rest. He stood in the center of the vibrating metal floor. His eyes flickered with the clinical blue light of Target Analysis. He ignored the blood trickling down his forearm. He focused entirely on the data.
The two Justiciars were exactly three minutes and forty seconds behind. Varkas was pushing his physical limits to close the gap. Kaelen was moving with more caution. He was likely scanning for the residue of the Silver Fang.
Valerica knelt on the floor. She was holding Mara close to her chest. The girl was pale and shaking. Valerica’s violet hair was matted with grey dust. Her dark eyes were fixed on the door.
“They will be through that plate in seconds,” Valerica said. Her voice was steady but thin. “They does not care about the locks. They will simply crush the hinges.”
“I am counting on it,” Vane replied.
He moved to a cluster of massive brass conduits. These pipes fed directly into the vertical vents of the upper Nesting Grounds. This was the territory of the Iron Wyverns. They were Rank 4 aerial predators defined by an extreme biological obsession with their young.
Vane pulled a handful of high grade mana coal dust from his pouch. He did not draw a circle. He began painting the black powder onto the surface of the pipes in a specific jagged pattern.
“Valerica, I need the Starfire Aura,” Vane said. He did not look back. “But keep it contained. I do not want the flames. I want the heat. I need you to press your palm against this brass and feed it a constant surge of golden mana.”
Valerica frowned. She stood up and stepped toward the pipes. She knew she could not manipulate her energy with the surgical precision Vane used. Her power was a stellar reactor. It was meant to incinerate or crush. She placed her hand on the cold metal. The Starfire Aura flared around her arm. The golden flames were vibrant and hungry. The brass began to glow a dull red.
“Lower the output,” Vane commanded. “I need a rhythm. Think of it as a heartbeat. We are not trying to melt the pipe. We are trying to wake up the neighbors.”
Vane used his star metal spear to tap a rhythmic sequence into the heated conduit. The mana coal dust acted as a conceptual amplifier. It caught the stellar energy from Valerica and projected it upward into the ventilation shafts.
To a human, it was just a low throb. To the Iron Wyverns nesting hundreds of feet above, it was the specific thermal signature of a rival predator trying to cook their eggs.
Vane looked at Mara. “Mara, reach into the vibration. Build a crystalline grating inside the pipe. It needs to refract Valerica’s heat into a high frequency whistle.”
Mara reached out. Her fingers were trembling. A series of small crystal hexagonal sheets formed inside the brass vent. The sound changed instantly. It became a shrill and piercing chime that echoed through the refinery walls.
“The scoffers are coming,” Vane whispered.
He gestured for them to move into the service crawl space beneath the floorboards. They descended into the dark just as the main refinery door was unmade.
Captain Varkas stepped into the room. His white gold aura was flaring with an arrogance that lit up the entire sector. Captain Kaelen followed him. Kaelen was holding his rapier with a loose and practiced grip. His violet eyes scanned the room with effortless disdain.
“There,” Varkas grunted. He pointed at the glowing brass conduit. “The rat is trying to mask their heat signature with the refinery’s steam core. He even used mana coal to boost the signal. It is a desperate and low born trick.”
Kaelen walked up to the pipe. He looked at the black dust and the crystalline grating inside. He let out a dry and mocking laugh.
“He thinks we are blind,” Kaelen said. He raised his rapier. With a single flick of his wrist, he shattered the crystals and severed the mana coal lines. “He is trying to lure us into the upper vents so the Wyverns will slow us down. He has forgotten that a Justiciar’s presence is a natural deterrent to common beasts.”
“Let us end this,” Varkas said.
Varkas flared his Physical Aura to its maximum output. He wanted to clear the mercury fog and showcase his dominance. He surged forward toward the exit at the far end of the hall. He believed he was the apex predator of this dungeon.
He was wrong.
The Wyverns did not view a Rank 5 aura as a deterrent. They viewed it as a direct threat to their lineage. By flaring his power in a room that was still vibrating with the heartbeat of their nest, Varkas had effectively declared war on the colony.
A screech that sounded like tearing steel ripped through the ceiling.
“Varkas, wait,” Kaelen said. His eyes widened.
He looked up just as fifty Iron Wyverns descended through the vents. They were monstrosities of bone and serrated metal. They ignored the faint “rat” scent in the floorboards. They dove straight for the brightest and loudest thing in the room. They dove for the white gold sun that was Varkas.
Varkas roared. He swung his massive fist and crushed the skull of the first beast. But three more took its place. Their claws were hardened by mercury consumption. They scraped against his aura with a sound that filled the entire refinery.
From below the grates, Vane watched the white gold light flicker. Varkas was burning through massive amounts of mana just to stay standing. He was being processed by the ecosystem.
“They are too busy being gods to notice they are being eaten,” Vane said.
He turned away from the slaughter. He led Valerica and Mara deeper into the dark sub levels.
“The scoffers always pay the highest price,” Vane said.
He gripped his star metal spear. He was heading for the central den. He had used the Wyverns to drain their mana. Now he was going to find a physical wall that even a Justiciar could not move.
