Chapter 300: The Giant
Vane saw it for the first time at the attack’s seventy-minute mark from the hill’s third tier.
Not clearly. From the third tier the Academic District’s lower section was visible at the distance that made detail difficult and scale apparent. And what was apparent from this distance was that something was moving through the lower district’s eastern wing that the eastern wing was not surviving.
Not a collapse. A collapse was sudden, a single event. This was continuous.
The eastern wing was changing shape over time the way things changed shape when something was moving through them from the inside. The stone not falling so much as being relocated. The building’s geometry revising itself in the direction of the thing’s movement.
Vane’s chest tightened as he watched.
He watched it for thirty seconds.
He ran the Usurper across the distance.
The analysis returned fragmented. The same fragmentation he’d been getting from the Abyss signatures all night, the taxonomy unable to classify what it was reading. The analysis building without completing.
What resolved was mass and direction.
The mass was the largest single reading the Usurper had returned in two years of running Target Analysis on everything it encountered.
His pulse quickened.
The direction was toward the island’s center. Specific and patient. The movement of something that had a destination and was traveling toward it without urgency.
He filed the mass reading. Filed the direction.
He turned back to the third tier’s northern approach because there were three small beasts on it and the small beasts were the available problem and the giant was not the available problem.
Working on problems that were not available was how people in Oakhaven died. Taking their attention off what was in front of them for what was behind them and finding out too late that the order mattered.
The fourth-years arrived at the giant’s position at the eighty-minute mark.
Vane saw this also from the hill, or saw the evidence of it. The specific quality of Authority output at Justiciar rank visible at distance as a change in the ambient mana field’s texture around the lower district. Dense, specific signatures of high-Sentinel and Justiciar-rank Authority activations producing a visible disruption in the field.
The passive Usurper sweep registered them as a cluster of very large signals moving toward a larger one.
Three signatures. Three fourth-years.
He knew two of them by analysis. The third he didn’t know by name but had run the Usurper on in the SMS hall’s second-year assessment. Had filed as a Justiciar-ranked student from the independent houses with an Authority that was heavy in the specific way of Authorities built for sustained engagement rather than peak output.
They engaged the giant.
Vane couldn’t see the engagement clearly from the third tier. What he could read was the field. The way the giant’s mass-signature moved and the way the three Justiciar signatures moved in relation to it. The geometry of an engagement expressed in ambient mana displacement rather than visible action.
The giant was not stopping. It was redirecting.
The three signatures were doing what Justiciars could do against something above their ceiling. Not stop it and not kill it. Something between those two things. Forcing the path of it. Costing it something even if the something was small. Buying time in the specific currency of sustained high output against a thing that didn’t deplete the way they depleted.
Forty minutes.
The giant’s path through the lower district curved north rather than continuing east toward the academic wing’s populated sections. Drawn away from the highest student concentrations by three Justiciars spending everything they had to make the redirection happen.
Vane watched this and understood it at the level of honest assessment.
What they were doing was available to them because they were Justiciars and it was not available to him because he was not. He was high Sentinel.
As of one hour ago.
The core shift had happened quietly between a cleared northern approach and this moment of watching the lower district. He’d felt it as a physical thing. A density increase that wasn’t pressure, wasn’t weight. Just more. The mana moving through the channels differently, settling into a configuration that had been building toward this for three hours of sustained full output.
The Usurper scan had confirmed what the sensation had already told him.
High Sentinel. The Silver Fang running on a high Sentinel core now. The transmission chain complete from the ground up. The form carrying something different than it had carried at the sixth hour.
It was not Justiciar rank.
Vane thought about what Ryuken had shown him in the inner sanctum. The Quicksilver Thrust at Transcendent output. The space between here and the target making an agreement about what was going to happen before the form began.
He thought about the two forms waiting in second year. Thought about come find me.
He looked at the giant’s path through the lower district.
Looked at what three Justiciars burning their entire mana reserves could accomplish against it. Which was a curve in a path rather than a stop. Time bought rather than the thing ended.
He filed this under what it was. The ceiling, visible. The specific honest accounting of where he was and where he needed to be.
He ran the Quicksilver Thrust against the small beasts on the northern approach because the small beasts were the available problem.
At the hundred-minute mark one of the three signatures went dark.
Not depleted. Depleted signatures didn’t go dark, they went quiet. A gradual fade as the mana reserve ran out.
Dark was different. The specific sudden absence of a signature that had been present.
Vane’s stomach dropped.
He looked at the lower district.
The two remaining Justiciar signatures had separated. One still moving with the giant’s path, one stationary. The stationary one was not the depleted kind of still. It was the other kind.
He looked at where the stationary signature was and understood what had happened.
The engagement with something above your ceiling required your full attention and full attention had a cost. The things that were not the giant found the gaps that full attention created. A mid-sized beast from the lower district’s collapsed eastern wing had found the gap in the third fourth-year’s attention and the gap had been sufficient.
One of them was gone.
His jaw tightened.
The two remaining signatures continued holding the path.
Vane watched them work for another twenty minutes from the hill’s third tier. The two of them doing what three had been doing. The cost visible in the way the signatures moved. Slower. The output less sustained. The redirection becoming less precise as the mana reserves approached their floor.
The giant’s path curved less than it had curved when there were three of them. It was moving more directly toward the anchor now. The remaining two Justiciars managing a deviation rather than a redirection.
Managing was not stopping.
He thought about this and looked at the spear in his hands and ran the honest accounting again.
Not yet.
That was the honest accounting. The gap between what he had now and what stopping it would require was real and measurable. Not a gap he could close tonight by wanting it to be closed.
The compound had given him a foundation. The foundation was not the ceiling. The ceiling was somewhere past the forms Ryuken had promised and past the fourth form beyond those and past whatever the fourth form announced in use.
Not yet.
He filed this under what it had always been filed under. Work to do, direction visible, distance real.
He turned to the next approach.
The giant reached the island’s anchor region at the hundred-and-forty-minute mark.
It settled there. Not in the way that living things settled. Not resting, not stopping in the way that implied it might resume. It simply reached the position it had been oriented toward for the entirety of its movement through the island and occupied it.
The way a river occupied a delta. The movement completing into presence.
From the hill the change was felt rather than seen. The specific quality of the island’s mana field shifting as the giant’s presence interacted with the anchor system. Not disrupting it, not destroying it. Something more complex that Vane couldn’t read clearly from this distance and didn’t have the taxonomy for.
The two remaining Justiciar signatures hadn’t followed it to the anchor region. They’d stopped at the lower district’s edge. He read them. Both still present, both depleted to the point where continuing was not available.
They had done what they could do.
Vane thought about the fourth-year who was not present anymore.
Thought about the evacuation stream that had moved toward the Academic District during the first hour. Following the protocol. Moving toward the direction the breach was loudest from.
He filed these under what they were.
The sky above the hill was beginning to do something. He read it without looking at it directly. The specific quality of light that arrived before dawn arrived. The darkness becoming a slightly different shade of darkness. The island continuing its slow work of carrying the night toward something else.
Vane ran the Quicksilver Thrust one more time against the northern approach’s last remaining beast.
The Silver Fang on a high Sentinel core arrived at the tip clean. The form carrying the full weight of the transmission chain. Everything the compound had built running at the level it had been built to run at.
The beast went down.
The northern approach was clear.
He looked at the lower district. The giant at the anchor region, settled. The two depleted Justiciars at the edge of what they’d managed to hold. The lower section of the Academic District changed in shape from what it had been at the sixth hour.
He looked at his hands on the spear.
He turned to the next available problem and kept moving.
