Chapter 306: The Count
Mara was in the corner of the second tier where he had left her.
The ledger against her chest. The quill in her hand that she had taken from the Villa 4 kitchen counter and had not put down in four hours. She was sitting with her back against the wall and her knees pulled up and her eyes on the western approach path, which was the approach path that faced away from the Academic District, and he understood from that specific choice of direction that she had been making decisions all night about what she looked at and what she did not look at and the decision to face west had been one of them.
She looked at him when he came through the second tier’s entrance.
The inventory look. Injuries, fatigue level, overall condition. She ran it the way she ran it every time he came through a door, the habit so old it preceded Zenith, preceding the Academy and the hill and Villa 4, reaching all the way back to the shack in Oakhaven where she had learned that accurate information was the only thing that kept reliably.
She found what she was looking for and what she was not looking for and she stood.
He looked at her. Twelve years old and two centimeters taller than she had been in June and ink on her fingers from two alphabets and the household ledger held against her chest in both arms, the ledger that was not the accounts one, the one she had started in July and never explained.
She did not ask what had happened. She did not ask about the Academic District’s lower section, visible from the second tier’s western approach as a structural absence in the peripheral sightline she had been avoiding all night. She read what had happened from how he looked the way she read everything, completely and without requiring it explained.
They walked back up the hill together.
Villa 4 had the specific quality of a space that had been empty for hours and was being occupied again, the lamps still at the reading height Mara had set them at before the alarm sounded, the tea still cold on the counter, the ledger still open at the entry that stopped mid-sentence. He looked at the mid-sentence and looked at the cold tea and did not say anything about either of them.
Mara went to the counter and put the kettle on.
He sat at the table.
Outside the window the garden was the pre-dawn grey, the specific lightless quality of the island at the hour before the sun found the hill. The garden wall was empty. The bird was not on it, the wall a bare strip of stone in the grey light, and he noticed the absence the way he noticed things, without performing anything about it and without looking away from it.
Mara brought two cups and sat at the ninety-degree angle.
She wrapped both hands around her cup. She looked at the window. She looked at the garden wall.
’She sees it too,’ he thought.
Neither of them said anything about the wall.
They drank the tea. The island outside was quiet in the aftermath way, the four hours of the attack having become a settled fact rather than an ongoing event, the specific quality of a crisis that had ended and left the space it had occupied full of something that was not crisis but was not ordinary either.
After a while Mara set her cup down.
She opened the ledger. Not the accounts one. The other one, the one that had been against her chest all night, the one she had been holding since he found her in the training ring. She opened it to a page he could not see from across the table and she picked up the quill that had been making the ink marks on her fingers and she wrote one name in it.
Slowly. The clean deliberate hand that had learned two alphabets since June, the letters precise, the lines straight without a rule. She wrote the name with the specific care of something that was being done correctly because the doing of it correctly was what the moment required.
She closed the ledger.
She put it on the shelf beside the accounts ledger, the two of them sitting next to each other on the shelf the way they had been sitting since July.
He did not ask whose name.
He knew whose name.
The count began at dawn.
He went back down the hill at the sixth hour when the medical teams were moving through the tiers and the administrative staff were beginning the specific flat institutional work of a large organization processing an event it had not been built for but was built to survive. The Vanguard staff moving through the Academic District’s accessible sections. The medical teams on the hill’s lower paths.
He moved through the count the way he moved through things that required his presence and his attention and could not be changed by either, which was with the flat accuracy of someone who had learned in Oakhaven that looking directly at things was always better than looking away from them even when looking away was available.
The western approach path. Two students. Second year. He did not know their names. He read the bands and the names went into the account he was keeping, the internal ledger that had no pages.
The central plaza approach. A Vanguard staff member with a sheet. He read the sheet.
The names of the Wardens who had gone into the Hollows at the breach’s first minute and had not come back out. Listed by title and surname in the flat administrative script that the Academy used for everything that required permanence.
Students. More than he had known. The specific number producing the specific quality of a number that was real rather than abstract, each name a weight that did not combine with the others into a collective weight but remained individual, each one its own specific absence in the world’s configuration.
He read the name on the sheet and felt the weight of it arrive in the specific way it arrived when something unconfirmed became confirmed.
Rowan Draeven.
Listed between two Wardens. The same font. The same iron lettering. No rank attached, no title beyond the name itself, which was the Academy’s way of listing everyone equally in the permanent record regardless of what they had been when they were living.
He stood with the sheet in his hands for a moment.
He thought about the Vanguard plate at the fourth practical briefing. The specific sound of Rowan’s voice carrying through the Grand Auditorium without amplification because it had never needed amplification. He thought about the collapse bearing, northeast, and the four seconds the collapse had lasted, and what four seconds in a structural collapse meant for anyone in the corridor when it began.
’He knew,’ he thought. ’He already knew before it happened.’
He handed the sheet back.
He kept moving.
The founding board in the east corridor had new names when he passed it in the late morning.
He read them in passing the way he read everything, completely, once, without slowing his stride. The clean institutional script of the administrative staff, the same iron lettering that had recorded significant events since the Academy’s establishment.
Wardens. Students. Staff.
Rowan Draeven.
He read the name in the iron lettering and kept walking because there was nothing else available and walking was what was available and in Oakhaven the thing that was available was always the correct thing.
He went back up the hill to Villa 4.
Mara was at the counter making the midday entry in the accounts ledger, the daily record of the household continuing because the household continued, because continuity was one of the things she had decided mattered and she had decided it mattered with the same flat certainty she applied to all decisions she had made and was not revisiting.
He sat at the table.
She brought food without being asked and sat at the ninety-degree angle and they ate in the specific quiet of two people from Oakhaven who understood that eating was what you did after hard things because eating was what kept you functional and functionality was what the next thing required.
Outside the window the garden wall was still empty.
’Come back,’ he thought at the wall, which was not a thought he would have said aloud and which he recognized as the kind of thought that arrived when you had been awake for too many hours and the careful management of what you let yourself feel had started finding gaps.
He ate.
The afternoon moved through the window.
