Chapter 307: What Remains
Three days after.
The lower Academic District was a different shape against the sky.
Vane had been looking at it from the hill’s third tier every morning since the attack and it had been a different shape each time, not because it was changing but because he was learning the new shape the way you learned things that had replaced familiar things, by looking at them until the absence of the old thing became less loud than the presence of the new one.
It had not become less loud yet.
The repair teams were working in the lower section from the seventh hour each day. He could hear them from the training ring before dawn, the specific sounds of mana-construction work, the resonant hum of spatial anchoring, the periodic deep crack of stone being fitted to stone. The sounds were correct. The sounds meant the island was repairing itself. The sounds meant nothing about the shape that existed in the time before the repair was finished, which was the shape he was looking at from the hill every morning.
He ran the forms in the Villa 4 ring.
High Sentinel output, the full sequence from the Quicksilver Thrust through to the eastern third form, the Silver Fang in its natural direction, everything running at the new baseline that had settled in the three days since the attack with the specific quality of a new baseline, which was that it no longer felt new. It felt like what was true. The distinction between the baseline you had arrived at and the baseline you had always had collapsed quickly once the arrival was complete, and he was glad of that because the alternative was running the forms while being aware of the gap between what you were and what you had been, which was the kind of awareness that made the forms into a performance.
He ran them as what was true and they ran clean.
Evangeline found him in the medical wing at the ninth hour.
He had been cleared by the medical staff at the second day’s assessment, the High Sentinel breakthrough having done what Nyx had said it would do, accelerating the tissue repair in the specific way that higher mana density accelerated biological processes. The shoulder damage from the eastern path engagement was resolved. The accumulated mana channel strain from three hours of sustained full output had dissipated. He was functional.
He was in the medical wing because Lyra was in it.
She had taken a hit on the hill’s lower path during the evacuation that she had not reported until the count’s second day because she had been running the circuit assessment for the suspended evaluation from the hill’s second tier and had not stopped running it until the count began and the assessment had no more function. The hit was not serious. It was the specific category of not serious that required two days of monitoring and produced the particular expression Lyra wore when she was being prevented from doing things she had decided needed doing.
He was sitting in the chair beside her bed when Evangeline came through the ward door.
Lyra looked at Evangeline. She looked at Vane. She opened her glass ledger and began writing, which was the Lyra version of removing herself from a conversation.
Evangeline looked at Lyra with the expression she reserved for students who met her actual standards rather than merely her stated ones. She looked at Vane.
She sat in the chair on the bed’s other side.
She did not speak immediately. She looked at the ward’s high windows, the late morning light coming through them flat and grey, the island’s September sky doing what September skies did three days after something catastrophic, which was continuing to be a sky.
’She walked every section,’ he thought. ’She knows what each one cost.’
He had seen her in the Academic District’s lower corridor at the first dawn, before the repair teams arrived, standing in the space where the floor had been and reading what the stone held with the Iron Heaven at low output. She had been there for a long time. When she left she had not said anything to the Vanguard staff waiting at the corridor’s edge. She had walked to the next section and read that one too.
She had walked all of them.
’She knows about Rowan,’ he thought. ’She knew before the count. She knew the moment she read the corridor.’
“The maintenance team completed their analysis this morning,” Evangeline said.
Her voice had the quality it always had, the specific flatness of someone for whom volume was a tool rather than a register, carrying through the ward without effort and without warmth and without the absence of warmth either. It simply arrived.
He waited.
“The anchor frequency disturbance from three weeks ago,” she said. “The source was external to the island.” She looked at the window. “The frequency signature does not correspond to any registered cultivation system on either continent. The maintenance team’s instruments gave back readings they do not have a classification for.”
The ward was quiet around them. Lyra was writing in the glass ledger with the focused attention of someone who was not listening, which was different from not listening.
“You told me this would be the case,” Evangeline said. Not an accusation. The flat accurate observation of someone confirming a prediction that had been made before the confirming information existed.
“Yes,” he said.
She looked at him.
The full attention of a Rank 9 Transcendent pointed at one specific person was a physical quality. He had felt it before, in Evangeline’s office in the first week of first year when she had told him about the Usurper’s ceiling and not known she was looking at a room full of EX ranks. He felt it now and it was different from then because then he had been Elite rank and carrying things he barely understood and she had been looking at a variable whose value she was estimating.
She was not estimating now.
’She has been running this calculation since the moment I said the source would read as external,’ he thought. ’Three weeks ago. She has been carrying it since then and she is looking at me now because the maintenance team’s confirmation has made the calculation complete.’
“You knew the frequency,” she said.
“Yes.”
“Before the attack.”
“Yes.”
“How long before.”
He looked at the window. He thought about the Ashfield breach seven weeks ago, the fragment in the northern third, the specific frequency he had filed and set aside. He thought about the Hollows three weeks ago, the night he had chosen not to tell her everything, standing in the medical wing while she stood in the same room he was sitting in now and made the condition she had made and he had agreed to.
“Seven weeks,” he said.
Something moved in her expression. Very small and gone immediately, the specific quality of a Transcendent processing information that has revised a prior assessment by a significant margin.
“Seven weeks,” she said.
“I did not understand what it was,” he said. “Not fully. Not until the Hollows.”
“And after the Hollows.”
He looked at her. “I was building toward ready.”
The ward was very quiet. Lyra had stopped writing. She was looking at the glass ledger with the expression of someone who was absolutely not following the conversation and would be running its full analysis within the hour.
Evangeline looked at him for a long moment with the eyes that had been reading students since before his parents were born, the specific assessment of someone for whom people were a text that experience had taught to read accurately.
She stood.
’Here it comes,’ he thought.
“When you are ready,” she said, “you will tell me everything.” She looked at the window, at the repair teams visible in the lower district’s direction. “Not today. You said you were building toward ready. Finish building.” She looked back at him. “But understand that the maintenance team’s report has already traveled through the administrative chain. Within a week it will reach people whose institutional function requires them to escalate unusual frequency readings.” She paused. “The window for ready is not indefinite.”
She walked to the ward door.
At the threshold she stopped.
She looked at the ward without turning fully around, the specific posture of someone who has one more thing and is deciding whether the deciding is finished.
“Rowan Draeven,” she said quietly, “spent thirty years doing what he did the night of the attack. Every Vanguard campaign from the Second Consolidation onward. He was better at it than anyone I have employed in the time I have run this Academy.” A pause. “The students who came off the hill in the first hour came off it because of decisions he made in the fifteen minutes before the shelter points became unreachable. That is a permanent record even if the board only has the name.”
She left.
The ward door closed.
He sat in the chair beside Lyra’s bed and looked at the window where the repair teams’ sounds were coming through the glass, the mana-construction hum and the periodic crack of stone fitted to stone.
Lyra opened the glass ledger to a new page.
“The frequency the maintenance team found,” she said, not looking up. “Is it the same frequency you read in the Ashfield breach. The one you did not report.”
He looked at her.
She wrote something in the ledger.
“I am not asking you to confirm it,” she said. “I am telling you that I have been running a model since the breach and the model’s current form has a variable I have been holding as unconfirmed for seven weeks and the Headmistress’s visit has moved the variable to confirmed.” She turned a page. “The model is incomplete. I do not have sufficient data to determine what the variable represents.” She looked up. “When you have the data, I would find it useful.”
He looked at her for a moment.
“Yes,” he said.
She nodded once and went back to the ledger.
He looked at the window.
Outside the repair teams worked in the lower district and the island continued the slow process of becoming what it was going to be now, the new stone lighter than the old, the specific lighter quality that would take years to weather into the color of everything around it.
He sat with the window until the ninth hour finished and then he stood and went back up the hill.
